I wish everyone would watch Star Trek 4: the voyage home, even if they aren't particularly star trek fans, because it deals with the humpback whales and a "what if" situation for our own future. If we kill the whales, are we killing our own future? We don't need to hunt the whales or most other animals any more, because we have alternatives now. :)

Talking about my knowledge, I am not either a scientist or politician.
I study by myself, and no one is behind me. My knowledge about whaling is mostly based on Japanese Fishery Agency and IWC. I hear comments from anti-whaling supporters. Of course, among their comments there are some reasonable and earth-concerned information I must consider. However, Those two listed above seem to spend their effort to give information based on results and numbers given by scientific researches.
I would like to avoid responding personally because some of the messages are nothing but harmful.
My main purpose is to educate each other, not to confute some environmental terrorits. I am not so much interested in proof of whale's intelect, but in discussions at place like IWC, the scientific evidence are integral to make reasonavle solutions.
@yy0000KK Humpback whales use a technique called bubble net feeding. As the whales approach from underneath, their prey, shrimp/fish, will escape to the sides and away from the whales mouth. To avoid missing out on these escaping shrimp/fish, the humpbacks will swim underneath the school in a circle and blow bubbles, creating a bubble 'net' frightening the food into a nice tight mouthful. This is inventing and using a tool. pretty smart. Please tell your country to stop killing my friends.

Of course, there are some economists and politicians in Japan to get voted by fostering nationalism against overseas pressure and consider whales as a marine resource. Looking back the Sushi boom in the world, tunas are hunted by many countries without any respect and the seas are raped.
Japanese are so skilled to benefit resources from oceans , with respect I must say. We carefully and thoughtfully cook fishes as Germans cook all the part of pork and respect oceans like you guys. However, I don't know Japanese restraunts outside of the country...

I think maybe it's because they seem eerily calm and creepy. Even though I know they aren't dangerous.
But I think when they talk/sing it is more beautiful than an orca or beluga song

i think whales are amazing animals, and i think they make very cool noises, however i would'nt call this music, and as for whale hunting some people actualy need whales to survive and they use it as there main sorce of food because they have to, if thats the case then i think it's o.k but otherwise not realy.

Talking about my knowledge, I am not either a scientist or politician.
I study by myself, and no one is behind me. My knowledge about whaling is mostly based on Japanese Fishery Agency and IWC. I hear comments from anti-whaling supporters. Of course, among their comments there are some reasonable and earth-concerned information I must consider. However, Those two listed above seem to spend their effort to give information based on results and numbers given by scientific researches.

My main purpose is to educate each other, not to confute some environmental terrorits. I am not so much interested in proof of whale's intelect, but in discussions at place like IWC, the scientific evidence are integral to make reasonavle solutions.
This can avoid both sides causing more conflicts.

@yy0000KK Humpback whales use a technique called bubble net feeding. As the whales approach from underneath, their prey, shrimp/fish, will escape to the sides and away from the whales mouth. To avoid missing out on these escaping shrimp/fish, the humpbacks will swim underneath the school in a circle and blow bubbles, creating a bubble 'net' frightening the food into a nice tight mouthful. This is inventing and using a tool. pretty smart. Please tell your country to stop killing my friends.

Whaling issue is not what all Japanese always discuss among friends.
Most of us don't eat whale meat daily anymore except some harbor areas.
The country was so poor after WW2, and whale meats saved our fathers and mothers back then.
I have eaten once, but not good. Only few parts are cherished by rich people.
However, many people don't understand the overseas' reactions toward us.

One reason is that so much emotion are concerned, and that distract two sides be calm and logical with sound reasoning.
Only politicians be happy because it is easy to control people who get too emotional to reasonably make reasonable decisions .
Maybe, this is true to all the cultural problems in the world. How can we reach to each other, this is one of my interests.

Of course, there are some economists and politicians in Japan to get voted by fostering nationalism against overseas pressure and consider whales as a marine resource. Looking back the Sushi boom in the world, tunas are hunted by many countries without any respect and the seas are raped.

Japanese are so skilled to benefit resources from oceans , with respect I must say. We carefully and thoughtfully cook fishes as Germans cook all the part of pork and respect oceans like you guys. However, I don't know Japanese restraunts outside of the country...
SO, I recommend you to come to our country and try real ones!
My idea is that the Local whaling should be kept as one of our food culture and we must protect people who live on whaling in Japan.

Please know the fact there are still people who must be dependent on whaling from the history.
The propaganda anti-whaling movie "the Cove" doesnot any good to both of us. the local Fishermen are not evil.
Stopping whaling is not realistic to me so far, but too much exporting Western food to Japan is one of the reasons for expanding whaling in broader sea as a governmental strategy.

Also, Please know that food-sufficient ratio of Japan is quite low, and lots of farmers having trouble with finding their successors, losing our traditions.
Because the land is sorrounded by the oceans, we have been living our lives by benefits of marine resources.

Sadly enough you are right.
The news just came to me that the government of Japan, that should be concerned about Fukushima and all the poor people that lived near this still leaking nuclear plant, gave the green light to sail its decimated whaling fleet to the nothern pacific.
Even when their freezed storages are overfilled with whale-meat, and almost no Japanese eats it;
the Japanese government is to damned nationalistic to hear any ‘foreign’ request not to slaughter whales.
