There were literally hundreds of studies done on reflexology around the world. For anyone interested in reading the full texts of the research, I would recommend a Google search of "reflexology and clinical studies." Unfortunately YouTube would not let me post the actual links--but you will easily find them yourself. Look at the research and decide for yourself. If reflexology (or anything) is not for you, don't do it. But don't assume it is a waste because it contradicts your current beliefs.
In 1996, Wang did a metaanalysis of over 300 clinical studies of reflexology involving over 8000 test subjects. The majority of these studies support the efficacy of reflexology on everything from abdominal pain to whiplash. Most of these studies were conducted in China or England, but all were scientific and published in peer-reviewed journals...all of which you can find with a simple research database.
Richardson's 1997 study involved MS patients. Subjects received either traditional treatment for MS or that plus reflexology, and the study showed that there was some statistically significant improvement in those with MS after six weeks of treatment. Further, the more regular the reflexology, the more improvement that was seen. This was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
In 1997, the Department of Health of the country of Denmark released the results of its own study of reflexology and headaches and concluded that after three months of regular reflexology treatments, 16% said the headaches were cured, 65% said the headaches were significants reduced, and 19% were able to get off headache medication. The study was completed by Brendstrup and colleagues.
Frankel's 1997 study showed that those receiving reflexology had statistically signifcantly greater reductions in baroreceptor reflex sensitivity than those not receiving reflexology. (This shows cardiovascular strength improvements.) The research was written up in the peer-reviewed journal, Complementary Therapies in Medicine.
The following study was done with lung and breast cancer patients in 2000 by Stephenson, et al. Subjects were given either reflexology or just the usual treatment for cancer, and there was a statistically significant (dramatic) decrease in anxiety in those receiving reflexology--and a less dramatic but real decrease in pain. The study was published in the scholarly journal, Oncology Nursing Forum.
dmosier....i believe in reflexology.. as did the egyptians and the peoples of India and many many other civilizations..I believe most of us are evolved as a species to not need much medical assistance...natural healing is sometimes simple but incredible.
Thank you for sharing your opinion. For other readers, please note that there are those of us who have dedicated our entire lives to medical and wellness study and we do not agree--there is significant research suggesting the benefits of reflexology. Try it yourself and see!
Have you "dedicated your entire life to medical and wellness study", or wasted your time and money on useless pseudo-medicine?
Lets find out.
Please show me 3 pieces of peer reviewed research that suggests the benefits of reflexology.
I can show you 3,000+ papers on the real benefit ( not just suggested benefit) of Physiotherapy on the foot. These papers are the result of caring individuals and teams who have truly dedicated their lives to medical research.
I do not usually respond to negativity like this online, because I know what I know, but for the benefit of others who might be persuaded not to try the one thing that might help them, I am willing to entertain your request and will send three of the hundreds of legitimate studies. Although my personal doctorate is in clinical psych, I work with people who use reflexology and other things you obviously do not believe in. There is more to reality than peer reviewed research. But here goes:
The following study was done with women with PMS symptoms. The women received either reflexology or a placebo treatment, and after 8 weeks of treatment, the women receiving reflexology had a statistically significant decrease in PMS symptoms. The research is from 1993 by Oleson and Flucco. It was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

No reflexology can not heal hiatus hernia.
Neither can Homeopathy, or crystals, or magnets, or any other bunk that people will try to sell you.
Please see you Medical doctor. She/he will have real answers for you.
