I continue to "stir the coals of freedom".....Countless men and women have endured extreme difficulty in order that we may yet have this "conversation". I am perplexed that those responsible for allowing "sub prime mortgages" have not been prosecuted to the full extent of the law. There is no excuse for their subversive wrecking of the American economy.... ..I am concerned that while America continues living to the beat of the conventional media that "Rome is burning"..the SLEEPER MUST AWAKEN
@serenitydayz: thank you; excellent bit of VITAL information. The U.S. government has already entered the TWILIGHT ZONE OF TOTALITARIAN TYRANNY against U.S. People, ushered-in by the demolishing of U.S. Civil Rights that the Patriot Act unleashed.
WE HAVE ENTERED THE TIMES WHEN CARRYING THESE PHONE NUMBERS IN ONE'S WALLET MIGHT BE THE ONLY HOPE TO SAVE THE LIFE OF ANY AMERICAN. Be afraid---no kidding!
Such an important point that it's the extreme right that reacts first to corporate takeover and subjugation of the people. They point their fears not at the source, but towards their fellow neighbors and anyone viewed as "other". Full-on helping to usher in a totalitarian regime. The left faces reality for what it is, but we are under-funded and lackluster compared to the Foxbot, well-funded extremists.
He sounds like a smart guy, and many of his points, particularly those regarding the media are probably right, but for me, anyone who believes in "the Gospels" looses much of their credibility. Also, I'd never heard of Sam Harris being described as a "Religious illiterate bigot" before (@ 23:45) ...
1 - You're in danger of representing your own 'religious illiteracy' with your 'Gospel belief/losing credibility' statement. You don't have to believe in the totality of Christianity to be able to appreciate the wisdom Jesus offered as is recorded in places within the Gospels. I don't know the full extent of Hedge's personal beliefs re: Christianity, but I was raised a Catholic & rejected it as an adult, yet even so I still recognise that wisdom IS present in places within the Bible.
2 - For other adverse views of Harris, you might like to start with the 'criticism & debate' section from his wikipedia profile page. I own a book of his, have read and viewed (on YT) various of his offerings, & if I'm to add my own observation about him, it'd be that his view of 'the enemy' is superficial/isn't nuanced enough. He has valid points to make, but treating him as an infallible authority would be a mistake. No human has yet cornered the market on what is - or isn't - real.
@TheAccidentalMonk Thank you for that somewhat patronising response. Chris Hedges does believe in god and I've seen him in debates with Harris and Hitchens and since then whenever someone mentions the word "apologist" I automatically think of Chris Hedges. So when you defend Chris Hedges (which you clearly are) you appear as an apologist also (one could say an apologist for an apologist)
If I'm anyone's 'apologist', it's for those who express the fact that they find the Bible does indeed contain wisdom and to not 'lose credibility' over the fact. If Hedges is a 'full-on' Christian, then from my pov that's an unfortunate undermining of the intelligence he otherwise expresses in the vids as above.
But maybe your bias extends beyond simply Christianity and covers anyone expressing anything about the divine, in which case you simply reveal your own limitations of mind.
@TheAccidentalMonk Search here on youtube for Hedges speaking about two of his other books "Christian Fascists" and "I Don't Believe in Atheist" that will give you some insight into his religious beliefs.
Also believing in god or not, is not a litmus test for intelligence you dicks. Even Sam Harris says this in his book. I say this as an atheist, who knows dumbass religious people and dumbass secular people.
Wow, look at these stupid, whiny libtards whining about being losers. WOW!!! I never realized how far gone stupid libtards like Chris Hedges and this other guy were. They're completely out of touch with reality. I guess Ann Coulter was right when she said "liberals are stupid. If they were smart they'd be conservatives." Never before have I seen such truth in a statement.
@IAmHotize - My guess is after 1 minute into the video you wrote your comment. He wasn't using any of the catch phrases that you're used to, he even used big words that escape the typical non-critical thinking person. You'd best return to Fox News (or what I call, dumbed-down Jerry Springer) where you'll hear nothing but noise, one ignorant person shouting over another, the type of thing Chris is talking about (but you wouldn't understand that).
@IAmHotize Hahaha. It speaks volumes of your intellect that you hold up Ann Coulter as your paragon of wisdom. I mean, who could possibly fault an ideology as profound as 'liberals are stupid'.
My advice to you? keep banging those rocks together, dude. Someday you'll discover fire.
This is the first time that I've heard from this guy but it is refreshing to hear someone (an intellectual) say the things that I have been thinking. It is as if he had read my mind. What can 'we' do to promote this ideology and get Americans to understand their position presently? How can we communicate this in a way that is available for the masses so that we the people, can begin to fight these forces that are diminishing our opportunity for freedom and liberty.
@esteban0321: alas, alas, Chris Hedges tells us in this video what we're facing: "... a terryfing rightwing backlash, that will obiterate an anemic, the anemic, sort of democracy that we have in place, and really usher-in an age of totalitarianism."
A grass-roots program of restoration of Civil Rights, of habeas corpus for starters, rights to privacy in all respects--as it used to be--and all other rights for the way we want to live---that's our only hope.
His points about the internet are so accurate. You find all kinds hillariously off bizarre propaganda on you tube. Instead of rightfully rioting about the injustices it´s being deformed into the weirdest fantasies. And i definately share his outlook of a totalitarian future where the retard masses glorify their own enslavement. Given the high tech edge of surveillance and manipulation this could lead to another dark millenium......
I was with Hedges until he slandered Hitchens and Harris. I've heard their words, and they are by no means religious illiterates. I can't say with certainty as to whether Hitchens is are right-wing or not, but Harris seems left-wing to me. One thing is for sure though, neither of them have ever been "chanting for war".
Their foreign policy, specially Hitchens, is indistinguishable from the Neo-Cons. There's a great article in the Nation called The Same Old New Atheism. Check it out.
Hedges is obviously intelligent, however he has been indoctrinated into Christianity at a very young age, as he says so himself. Because of this, he will never be as wise as Hitchens and Harris until he is able to denounce his religion, imo.
Hitchens and Harris appropriately argue against deluded beliefs and the import of education. Yet, because they don't agree with his deluded faith, Chris calls them monsters. Chris sounds as though he's against everyone and everything, and that he's the messiah who will save us from a horrific doom. I'll pass on whatever he's smoking.
@Incrediblemouse5 As much as I dislike christards, I have a soft spot for Hedges and I'm happy to listen to him talk at length about anything other than religion. In this instance I think his criticism of Harris and Hitchens was primarily aimed at support for illegal wars.
He brings it up as a mission from satan and suddenly, what seemed like a fringe impression of sociological politics turned into "buy yer tinfoil hats here. tinfoil hats 10 pounds a piece."
I don't understand that you have those great minds that will transcend the modrn history .. And like the data shows most of Americans will just turn away and watch Faux news. Im from Europe and I have to dig and translate many articles from France , Germany etc. too get the full facts . But you speak in the same language and you got this great intellectual info right on the plate. Just fucking look at it.
Many times I think the people are the problem. Some times I listen too those tea party movement and its like you would have to convince them that they are cheated even tho you can clearly see where the problem is by now. Its like you had to convince a victom of a robbery that they guy that pointed a gun to their scul wsn't a charity worker but a criminal. And many people could ask if im European what do I care. Well I don't like to see great potential and Ally like US WASTED.
@resistanceunion Well said. But you have to understand, that America is the country of the extremes: you have very intelligent people but also very dumb ones.
Well. It makes alot of sense untill he starts talking about Jesus anyway. At that point he is wrong. The gospels are not all nice and dandy and people should really stop thinking that bullshit.
@wgilroy uhhh except for the fact that the power elite have had 54 years of increasing wealth and power since 1957.things are always changing and we need people like Hedges or Chompsky to interpret the information and even if you don't appreciate their interpretation appreciate the fact that they are extreme intellectuals that give much needed credibility to the revolution. the power elite and the sheeople love to marginalize and ignore genuine info as conspiracy but these guys cant be ignored!!
he should've mentioned what he says at the end near the beginning already when he said "people are right to move to the right". one shouldn't say phrases like that without adding that that's still a horrible thing and they should still do other things instead of moving to the right.
@Arkinight If you haven't listened to tanvo93's suggestion "Chris Hedges and Derrick Jensen on Totalitarianism and Resistance" here are Hedges' final words that refer to violence, "...I accept Derrick's premise that we may have no choice."
He is able to articulate, without sentimentality or distraction, the forces driving politics in this country. From him we can learn for ourselves the language to describe what we are witnessing. The real message is that we must stop wasting our energies and our hopes in failed liberal institutions and careerist leaders who risk nothing. No one else can do it for us; true liberals need to take a real stand and get over the fear of being thought "unreasonable."
Chris Hedges FTW. Absolutely no words to express his clarity, saneness, compassion and truthfulness. This is what a 21st century patriot looks like.
