  • In middle school, this really IS the eternal question!

  • Can this cut cd with Carlos be purchased? Does anyone know?

  • LOVE..always have..these guys got the serious funk..

  • David Garibaldis drumming makes Tower of Power imo

  • Ease on into Hipland!!!

  • this is the sound that will leave a long legacy for generations to come

  • Whoops. The word is "EVER" built.

  • Man, think of this horn section with EWF, Chicago, Kool & The Gang, WAR, Brass Construction, K.C. & Sunshine Band, B.T. Express and The JB's horn sections. If a time machine is every built, guess which decade I'm gonna visit. Great post.

  • Saw these cats at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas with The Average White Band. In my 50+ years, I couldn't believe how they rocked it. They are a true original soul/funk band.

  • I didn't have a problem with Carlos here. It sounds like some people are disappointed that he didn't sound like Bruce Conte, but it's not really fair to expect him to; he was brought in to sound like himself. Although the end result didn't really sound like conventional ToP, I think it amounted to good music.

I mean, there were parts of this concert where I thought Mr. Santana stood out like a sore thumb...but this wasn't one of them. Just my opinion.

  • Just a high-energy, kick-ass performance by one of the world's tightest bands! Carlos came unprepared, or he, of all people, knows better than to even attempt to play lock-step with those guys.

  • Carlos needs to cut his nails!

  • Paaaaaaaaaaaady... :)

  • Awww Funky!

  • Yeah this crowd isn't very hip. I was more hip than these guys at an Earth Wind and Fire concert, and I'm a white boy!

  • hehe, the trombone made a mistake at 6:14... its a human!!

  • only thing unhip is the crowd.

  • unbeleiveably funky!

  • Daym that tenor sax!

  • Its the funky-ass organ thats the star here.

  • @Sambergler the great chester thompson. played with t.o.p. for years. now with santana. peace and blessings

  • This isn't a guitar feature, guys. Santana is not the most important person here. The most important person here is the first trumpet. The other most important person is the other first trumpet.

  • Am I the only one that thinks they rushed this unbelievably? I love this TOP, but this song is supposed to groove, not spasm

  • @Blokeio A bit sped up, yeah...

  • Santana is the most overrated guitar players ever.

  • the voice is so amazing

  • santanna???

  • trumpets in the wrong key at 1:00 !?!?!?

  • @chewyflea No, it's caused musical dissonance. Musicians have been using it since the 1800s.

  • @LightSpectra Not in the funk...

  • holy shit you all are so idiotic santana played a like 15 second solo and all of you are freaking out take it easy jesus christ the dude sounded fine if you ask me

  • epic o.O

  • Good God!!

  • Note to Tower: don't have your friends sit in with your super-tight band, no matter how famous they are. Santana is amazing when he plays w/in his cocoon, but seems out of his element in other styles of music.

  • no wonder your name is smelly bottom you dont know good music when you hear it

  • totally the best in funky hip.....

  • Chester Thompson just has that Hammond organ sound down!!! Amazing display of musical craftmanship.

  • Santana, please, go home... what the hell do you think you're doin' there????

  • OOOOH Two Hammonds--one is the New B3--cooooool

  • David Garibaldi is slammin the funk out of it....into a deep pocket.

  • deam i saw the title

'santana with tower of power :D:D goodd !!!'

but te solo's are just bad.

i've heard only one good solo and that was from a old tape.

    santana can better.

but the rest is deam good

    FUNKY SONG

  • Wow...my man Santana was no part of that groove.

  • Yes, yes, yes!!!

  • been there ,done it, this it was it i with out a question.

  • 1smellybottom find a new name asshole!

santana is from the bay area like top/ so eat shit and die!

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about, but that was one TASTY solo from mister Carlos Santana.

  • Slicklick at 1.09!

  • Oh Yeah!!!! Such a tight group...could listen to this forever it seems!

  • Musiq is the message.

  • Doesn't get better than this.

  • Was there too chub, will be doin' back-ro-backs at Ram's Head tomorrow, just getting geared up. Don't know how many years TOP has left with Emilio and Doc turning 63 this year, but I'm gonna ride with them as long as they can!

  • what's with the santana hate? he's good enough for tower of power, but he's not good enough for you guys?

not many guitarists can hang with ToP on their own song. I'd love to see how well you guys would do jamming with ToP in front of all those people

  • TOP is still ultra tight and blowin out the jams. See them...40 years of funk. Saw 'em in '73 at VCU...and last year at the State in Nova...TIGHT!

  • damn this song always makes me want to get up and dance!!

  • @Coldsteal21 Me too!!

  • Chester Thompson is incredible at basically anything he goes for. Amazing.

  • groooooooooove !

  • Haha What is Hip?

    Tower Of Power - Hip

Santana - :S not at all...That was embarrassing.

  • Wow. They still sound good

  • This is hip!

Santana is not hip to this groove. His solo sounds like it was meant for a different song. Maybe he thought the band was diggin James Brown

  • word

  • @1smellybottom i bet you can't even play guitar at all , carlos is what is hip hater

  • @1smellybottom

    u r so right!

We need some TOP Funk not Santana crap (Even though I love Santana but he clearly don't fit in with TOP)

  • @1smellybottom Yes, Carlos looks a bit under pressure in this clip and short of ideas for his solo, which, unlike him, sounds completely uninspired. Chester T., however, saves the day with an amazing organ solo !!!

  • @1smellybottom In funk the chords are the most important part for guitar and his chords were hellas tite...thats what he did like 99% of the song

  • @1smellybottom In funk the comping is the most important part for guitar and his chords were hellas tite...thats what he did like 99% of the song

  • got to love that groove

  • That's some serious, serious groove...

  • I LOVE T.O.P. and with Santana...holy crap! Awesome!

  • WHAT IT IS!

  • Hip is this !

  • i love the brass section from tower of power so much... they are so fuckin good <3 vocals are awesome.... and the keyboarder with his organ and the drummer are so FREAKIN FUNKY thats incredible

    tower of power go on!

  • ya!

  • Comment removed

  • hey dickface! santana has more music blood in his dick then you have in youre whole body ! shyliips!!

  • dude listen to sideways by citizen cope ft. santana for starters, then get back to me...

  • soloing is one of the hardest things to do in the the world of music. so if u can play just as hard as santana and solo as bad ass as he does, then u have the right to say wealther or not he sucks or not. cause right now u have no right or skill so shut up and learn to show some respect

  • Being as solidand tight as tower of power as a band is much more difficult than soloing!

  • That's the best old school funk rhythm section in the busines. Love Lenny Pickett's vocals on the original recording. What a fun band to listen and dance to!

  • 5 guineas from just north of Boston, this was our theme song. We'd tip dj's $50 to get it plaind on Landsdown St

  • Hey dude...Lenny Pickett is a saxophonist. Lenny Williams is the name you're looking for.

  • Correct on that.

  • What's with this snorefest crowd watching? They're just standing there! Damm, liven up peeps

  • Here here! I'd be dancing like a mad fool if I were watching Santana and Tower of Power.

  • 10 yrs ago, I saw Carlos Santana crush Yoshi's in Oakland when he sat in with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. He's a versatile musician, crushing the Brazilian-Jazz-Funk grooves.

  • Who from the trumpet section is the highblower?

  • Adolfo Acosta, the fatty^^ I think he plays lead on most of their song nowdays, and Mike Bogart plays second trumpet and trombone.. But i'm not sure...

  • pretty sure the guy all the way to the left with out the bandana on

  • santana is from a different angle mindset....thats all

  • Anyone who thinks Carlos Santana is a good guitar player after watching this is DEAF........ Santana is the biggest fraud guitarist u could ever come across...... what was he thinking even before he started to play his solo........... he is the ugly duckling between these beautiful musicians..... lol

  • Gotta love all the numnutz comments about Carlos...just goes to show how naive the youngsters are out there...this is the REAL funk, not the hiphop cheese whiz tracked crap all over the place these days...listen and learn, chillun'!

  • C'mon folks! Carlos is just sitting in. It's TOP's music. He's not gonna upstage them. He's a gentleman. And if you have any doubts about his playing ability, just listen to his stuff with John McLaughlin back in the day. Holy crap, where have you all been?

  • U the best ??? u aint the number one and aint even number two(zap) so listen now : this Carlos have fun and 1 million or more people like hearing him me include but i like steve vai too ... Now will you stop compare and compete on each other and just invite vegtable to jam jam jam ... and then with good work team u may go on the top and not care about people saying look how he look i can do better ... lol

  • the lame crowd really detracts from this.

makes me feel like i'm watching the last episode of american idol or something..

  • Santana's playing on this tune just doesn't get it... No groove, no soul, nada. Listen to Jeff Tamelier's playing & compare....

  • Rippin Funk! One of the best songs ever.

You on a hip trip, DZNuTTsRaDiO.

    lol

    Thanks for sharing this

  • How in the world Carlos Santana is regarded as even a "good" guitar player is beyond me. He knows one scale, 3 licks, and cant even play those right half the time. And before you say "id like to see you do better", well, i can and will prove it at request. That being said TOP is tops as always(pun intended). I was just curious to see how bad CS looked in amongst their amazing musicianship and was not dissapointed.

  • Hit the nail on the head there mate. I've always thought Santana to be THE most over-rated guitarist out there, and finally someone who agrees! + wtf is that tone he uses?!

TOP are pro - allways have been allways will be, long live the tower!

  • Are you completely serious?

Have you even heard Santana play anything? Obviously not, if you think that. :\

The man is Spanish, and plays with a Spanish flare, in case you haven't noticed. Or maybe you're unaware of the different styles of guitar along with different tones? Either way, you're a very strange person to not think that Santana can play amazingly well.

So, yeah, I'll take you up on that offer.

I'd like to see you do better.

  • Yeah Man!! your right!! He doesn't even

belong on the same stage with the TOP! He is way over his head, trying to solo over this tune,

especially when you can tell there is nothing creative that he is doing to add to

what is musically being played. Check him out trying to solo in "knock yourself out" from the same concert..... It's just as bad!!!!! Chester Thompson kicks big time ass though!!!!

  • WELL! i definitely agree with you guys. i do enjoy Santana music somewhat but he should stick to that!!!

Knowing Mark Harper personally, I have to say there was NO sense in Santana taking those solos when MARK WOULD OF DONE WAY BETTER.

This had to be embarrassing for Carlos and i think he knows he wasn't cut for this. His expressions on " knock yourself out" say it. Tower of Powers musicianship is way higher and i wish Carlos would have avoided this for himself.

  • Sober up and listen again...

  • Awesome, the power of tower kicks ass!

  • the stage looks so crowded. :D

  • Way too hip!!!!

  • dammit, 3:50 kicked me to a higher high. Just plain genious crossover to soul power =)

  • Love it TOP means top of the game!

    East Bay Grease - funks!!!

  • as I heard and understand it, David Garibaldi left TOP a little while ago, like 5 or 6 years ago? Mimi Castillo publically stated that the "tight backbeat" including Rocco Prestia was "missing" that 'beat' that Garibaldi was known for and provided the essential sound from the rthymn section. When Garibaldi did come back, Castillo said they got their "sound" back and TOP was BACK!

  • this clip is so coool!

  • When it comes to funk drummers, there's Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks, David Garibaldi and then everyone else. Garibaldi is a funk technician of the highest level.

  • Ya gotta add Dennis Chambers to that list, surely...? He was the drummer on Maceo Parkers last album, need I say more....

  • These guys and Chicago made Trumpet sexy...

  • What are you talking about? Trumpet was always sexy :p

  • Funk at its finest. Could do without Santana though.

  • love the drummer dave Garibaldi in this one

  • one of the first funk bands, i really appreciate...

Found it now after a long time here!

Tube sometimes can make your day.

    YEAAH

  • Best TOP tune, along with Funk the Dumb Stuff!

  • The best live version of What Is Hip I've ever heard!

  • satana sucks here sorry

  • Santana wasn't doing too bad, he was harmonically fine, and he combined the two genres with ease. Does it look like he's struggling? I know he couldn't become a funk guitarist any time soon, but, for a one off, not too bad Santana, not too bad.

  • My God!! How freakin great are they here!?! Santana not quite doing it for me, but the rest WOW! The breakdown in the middle is sick!!! Reminds me of Maceo Parker stuff. Adolfo and Mike are crazy mofos - incredible players very much in the Maynard mold!

  • well santana does not play funk, but this combination is amazing

  • I agree with both sides here. Musicians coming together to play is a great thing, but Santana ain't particularly funky. But it doesn't matter; that's not really the point.

  • he isnt very funky, but at least he got down, your right,

  • Well.. I dont think that Im supposed to discuss with musicians about whether it is funk soul jazz or fusion.. but IF it is called fusion somewhere.. then I think a come - together with santana is great when a band like TOP takes part ( or another great band )

I liked it and I think they are all amazing.. NO ONE should "stay out of funk " hes feeling it as well as people do who enjoy music .. in my opinion ^^

  • santana es el mejor

  • Santana is mi Idol, but... the funk is not for him!

  • Kick Ass... Mutha.. #$% in arrangement !!

  • can I get an Amen from the congregation

    AMEN

  • whwere is eddie hazel when you need him eh, lol

  • The band was hot, but Santana needs to stay out of funk.

  • Wow. It is a really good grove, until you get towards the end of this. Then it gets great. I was trying to work while listening/watching this. But by the end of this, I couldn't stop moving. I just started a replay as I was typing this review, and I was typing along with it as I bounced. Awesome! This is funk!

  • Just AWESOME! They're really kicking ass especially the horns;-) But what is Carlos doing?! Maybe he had a bad day...

By the way: this is not somewhere in the world, this is the legendary Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland!!!

  • ya, carlos was most definately not on his game

  • Thompson, Garibaldi, Santana, and the horn section of tower power... Certainly one of the most brilliant meeting !

  • this music is highly fordibben ! but sooooooo amazing !!!!

  • screw my other ridiculous comment... this is awesome, who is everyone on it? i know some...

  • i think im gonna cum

  • Kinda seems like it was not planned, impromptu maybe?? But Chester Thompson is just so AWESOME with this band.

  • this is jus sad..santana's not even there!i dun feel him or anyting..man..but i stil luv him..CHESTER THOMPSON!!the mannnn!

  • where you sleeping at 5:30 :) or are getting a bit deaf ( or are you a drummer..... o wait that's the same:D )

there are so many musicians, would unfair to let him solo for halve the time :P

  • drummers,my brothers!lets unite!

but seriousli..tt was reali crap from him..he's high on weed or smth man..tt's reali not the santana i luv..look at 5:40! tt was the saddest ting ever! the choke and he plays nothin..it's not santana at all..and all he does at the end is run down the bridge..man..i stil luv him tho,jus not this performance..which is a waste

  • Chester Thompson and Carlos Santana with Tower of Power!! It's almost like a reunion concert, haha. I wish I was alive to see Tower of Power when Chester Thompson and Lenny Williams were still in it.

  • this band its amazing fking good band :D!

  • This is my 3rd comment, all I can say is LAWD LAWD LAWD!!! My favorite group of all time. Props to David kickin those skins and Rocco runnin the bottoms. Chester ticklin the SH*T out of that Hammond at 3:32 and then some. TOP horns....NONE BETTER!

  • awesome band

  • JESUS! how many years have they devoted to perfecting the ending of that song!

    that is spectacular Musicianship! :D

  • Haha I know they never play it the same way twice it seems like.

  • Bad camera moves. No Camera's on the Solo

  • Rocco and David stole the show....Again!

  • Let me ask you the eternal question;

    What is hip?!

  • I'm 49yrs old, and i've been listening since i was 12 yrs old. when i was old enough to go see them, they use to play a small club in Hunington beach Ca. called the Golden bear. The horns would pearce your head, and the drums and bass would thump your body cause you were so close.T.O.P. still kicks ass!!!

  • /agree with ilbasso74

Rocco's got no camera time whatsoever!!

  • tower of power rulezzz

  • someone forgot to tell the camera crew that there is a bass player in this band....

  • Who is the lead trumpet player?! I love that range and tone! This song is groovin like crazy im lovin it!!!

  • The groove of this song is just scary! David Garibaldi really lays it down rediculously.

  • This isn't somewhere in the world,

This is at the Montreux Festival, dude!

TOP is so groovy, funky, tight...

and Santana is like we say in Belgium: the cherry on the cake =)

    FUNKYYYY

  • this is live at the montreux jazz festival :)

  • gees carlos gimme a break...

  • Still funky as hell...

  • hah, your jazz band more funky than T.O.P.? hahahaha!!

  • Tower of power a high-school band??? I don't think so. I listened to this band a lot when I was in my teens/early twenties(a long time ago). They are fantastik. They played in Markham, Ontario last year but I missed them unfortunately. I won't miss them next time!

  • what key is the organ in? e major?

  • Yes, they're all kind of in E major; it would be better described as E7. They use the minor pentatonic scale over it a lot. Chester Thompson goes kinda out at the end of his solo, which might have confused you.

  • The comment iwssonb made must be one of 2.

    -A joke

    -Very ignorant

  • Dang, "iwssonb," that's gotta be one hot high school jazz band! Louder than T.O.P., a 40-year-old funk/soul band, in a huge venue like this? And FUNKIER than David Garibaldi and Francis Rocco Prestia?? WOW! When's your next tour?

This isn't loud because it's a video on YouTube. If I were there, I would wear earplugs.

  • i would like to see a video of your jazz-band playing what is hip =)

  • usually Tom Politzer takes that solo in the middle and man....

saw them 3 weeks ago there's nothing like playing in the sopranino range prefectly on tenorsax!!!

  • is that still david garibaldi on the drums?

  • Yea thats David garibaldi on drums.1980 was when he left the band but now he is playing with them again.

  • yes- and the best : Tom Politzer on Tenorsax!!!

  • Tower of power was always super hot with there horn section. I seen them on the same show with Lydia Pense "COL
