To me how he's performing them isn't great or particularly funny, it's the ideas that're important. When I think later about this particular bit I might crack a smile. It's like a laugh on the inside instead of outside.
II remember as a teenager watching Steve do this routine on another show before SNL ever was on. And yes being a teenager I stole his happy feet and would have to start dancing away LOL I remember alot of strange stares in elevators.
investigating miles frasier's brother and his napkin use of ransid slap stick comedy.... i'm listening, daphne. British invasion of the buttox. m' lord, whew. spotted dick!
@trex65ghia Martin is an "anti-comedian," which is what makes him so funny. Seriously, where would Steven Wright, Emo Phillips, Judy Tenuta, Carrot Top and so on, be today without Steve's influence? Just as Steve himself has openly acknowledged the influence of acts who helped pave the way, such as Jonathan Winters and Monty Python, among others.
@driftwoodviking ok....i dont think you need to expain anything to me.. Its either funny or not..Its pretty subjective. Its like you trying to elpain why i should like the color blue.. I never found him to be funny... In anything...
so absurd

It's funny because Steve Martin calls it "happy feet" not "sad feet." Explaining this just kills the comedy.

This is one of his most famous bits right? How is this funny? Must be a generational thing.

@djw151 no, this is a tasteful sense of humor thing.

@ducttapesniper42 I'll take that as sarcasm.

I want to do this in an elevator.
Look around shiftly, then quetly announce 'Uh-oh... Excuse me, I'm afraid I'm getting... HAPPY FEET.'
Then flail around wildly as shown above.
If someone gets a minor injury, you did it right.

@trex65ghia I don't feel the need to keep explaining or defending Steve's ironic style of humor...Some people "get" him, some don't. :)
