@noiseonlyplease John left and the Chilis didn't wnat to hold some audition for a new guitarist, they wanted someone they already knew. Josh was a good friend of Frusciante and the red Hot Chili Peppers and so Flea called him and asked him if he wanted to join the band and Josh accepted. Before Josh joined RHCP he had already toured with them, opened for them on concerts and played with them at concerts. He has also recorded an album with Frusciante. There are interviews about this with RHCP.
