this was a really bad move for the fda... and big tobacco... now people are making e-cig mods out of their basement and vaping flavors with nicotine... great job big tobacco... now you have helped to stimulate your demise
The main argument i have for this debate is... what and how we smoke is none of the government's damn business. If it happened because big tobacco had a hand in it (i haven't read up on that yet) to cut out the smaller guy, same argument, none of a government agency's business getting in the way of the market, of course.
Philip Morris(tobacco company) was a very large advocate for the tobacco bill, so many think that bumping off every flavour except for menthol was to cripple their main competition. It makes sense when you think about it, because the bill makes no sense what-so-ever, and this doesn't protect the kids because to look cool, kids aren't smoking flavoured cigs. They'd prolly get their ass kicked if they tried to look cool with a flavoured cig. Kids are smoking Marlboro Reds and Camel Crush.
flavor cigs they banned then what was the freakin point of making them to the market? i smoke and i think regular cigs are bad for you then flavored why not ban regular smoking products i don't think it should be banned since we have rights to do what we want in this country.
Never seen anybody smoking flavored Cigarettes or Cigarillo on a daily basis, why banning something that most of the people I know just smoke on occasions for fun....maybe I should move to a Communist country, they have more freedom than us nowadays.
WELL IN CALIFORNIA AS FOR CIGGS. NOW WE CANT ASK THE CLERK FOR FULL FLOVOR 100'S OR LIGHT 100'......WELL WE WILL NOT BE SOLD CIGGS IF WE ASK FOR THEM IN THAT WAY .WE HAVE TO SAY RED 100'S(FULL FLOVOR 100'S)AND BLUE 100'S INSTEAD OF LIGHT 100;S WHATS THE DANG DIFFERANCE.....ALL CIGGERETTES ARE BAD I AM A SMOKER ID LOVE TO STOP ...AND WELL THIS DOESNT KEEP THE KIDS AWAY. ALL OF THEM KNOW
As I understand it, the exemption for menthols was rationalized by saying that since many African-American people smoke them, a ban on all flavored cigarettes could be viewed as a racist action even if the hand signing the bill has mocha skin.
The problem I see with this is clove cigarettes are from Indonesia, right? So I'm going to guess lots of Indonesian-Americans smoke cloves. Are they only 3/5 as good as African-Americans?
The FDA also wants to try and ban electronic cigarettes also. They just used that same excuse "well the e-juice comes in flavors, so now its going to appeal more towards children." It just all comes down to money. The big tobacco compaines are scared of losing money..So they get the FDA to step in and try and ban these products.
@facesofmeth you can still legally purchase them at any reputable smoke shop, the ONLY difference is that they now say "clove flavored cigars" on the box
@facesofmeth ive ordering blacks on the web since the ban kicked in am i have not had trouble with them. the only thing that sucks about ordering from the web it take about 2 -3 weeks to arrive. i live in tx.
great video, now a few things to anyone who reads this:
1. you can buy djarum blacks online for a fraction of the price you would have paid in a store, shipped to your house.
2. electronic cigs are being targeted next b/c they are alot healthier alternative to traditional smokes. (not that they are healthy, but less bad for you than normal smokes)
Menthol cigarettes are more addictive than any other type. Menthol is a natural drug used to ease pain. It is also the active ingredient in Halls cough drops because it soothes. When one smokes their throat becomes dried out and the menthol soothes it. After that person has stopped smoking they will need another cigarette to feel better. Thus a cycle. There are plenty of studies. Kudos for buying black but thumbs down for hogging them. :P
Some great insights here, glad to hear what u had to say on the subject. People have to wonder why tobacco ISN'T illegal, while (other) substance abuse IS illegal. When u look at the figures, all other substances combined don't even come close to the death toll of tobacco. Ur bewilderment at why tobacco isn't banned should be heard by more ppl. I smoked clove cigarettes briefly in the early 1980's and thought they were awesome...until I got sick. I don't like smoking ANYTHING and I feel profoundly sorry for those who get hooked. I'm hoping this law means I won't have to smell clove cigarettes anymore, but other than that I agree that it's stupid and obviously favors American Big Tobacco.
Thank you for this! I am extremely glad that you made this video. It respects the American concept of free will and honesty.
Most would just gripe for ten minutes that not ALL cigarettes were banned, but you realize and discussed the fiscal matters. It's extremely scary that our government just authorized Big Tobacco's success and squashed the little guy.
And why would the FDA reduce the level of nicotine? The answer is very simple. If the smokers can't get the same level of nicotine they once had, their brain will know and they run and buy more. It's all about selling ciggs, big money and greed. HA and they thought we'd never know.
tobacco is a major part of the North Carolina economy. Without it, the whole state would have to apply for a bailout. Smokers know what they are doing to themselves, so let them be. You should also research the market for recreational smoking of heavy tobacco, such as Black & Milds. Peace.
Well, I'm just glad I have a government that can break into my personal life and control what i can do with my body. *sarcasm. Why don't you just limit the amount of food people eat so we don't have any fat people? Seriously, it is ridiculous.
The menthol exemption was part of the deal the FDA made to get major tobacco companies to accept regulation. Why? Newports are the second-largest brand in the market.
Actually, this could backfire. If the young audience can't get the flavored cigs (and menthol is harsh compared to apple or clove so it's not a likely transistion), the majority may just give up on smoking.
The other option? Hand-rolling, which is exceedingly popular in Europe (taxes on loose tobacco are much lower than on cigs).
yes. lets stop the small tobacco companies from luring young kids into buying their product by making them buy the product from the major tobacco corporations. objective achieved. way to go country.
My internet connection is so slow, I can't watch your entire video. I'm very againts smoking and I don't see this as a problem. It sucks, and I would be pissed if I smoked a favorite flavored cig, but why let smoking be pleasant with added flavor? It's a shitty habit, it smells and tastes nasty, so why sweeten it up? It's not that kids will want to smoke grape flavored cigs, adults do too! I don't want adults smoking any more than kids. :)
It's interesting. They rereleased it in cigar form. Now the cigars are the size of cigaretttes. So there isn't much difference other than the outer layer is no longer paper.
No offense, i tried the cigar flavors, i baught a pack of Djarium Cherry cigars and they do not have the taste of cherry at all, i mean seriously it tastes like shit. Im auctully just pissed off now.
that is pretty crazy. its unbelievable how hipocritical that is and they think nobody is going to notice. speaking as a non-smoker, the economical ramifications of that kinda burns me up too (excuse the pun)! nice to hear your point of view! makes for a nice change of pace for the channel and i thought it was well put whether everyone agrees with you or not. : )
Thanks! I have fairly strong opinions on a lot of things, but I don't really talk about them because politics really seems to divide people. If I find a major issue and speak about a narrow aspect of it, it is much easier to express how I feel and have people be willing to discuss it, even if they disagree.
Maybe Obama banned clove cigarettes because they are from Indonesia and he has bad memories of growing up there so this is his way of "sticking it to" Indonesia?
I agree with mostly everyone, but I just don't see any of the comments coming up with any better solutions to the problem. What can the FDA (or anyone) really do?
I strongly believe banning ALL cigarettes is not a plausible solution at all. Smoking isn't (for most smokers) a recreational or leisure activity, it's an addiction. You can't just ban them and expect smokers to stop. Most smokers I know, including my dad, smoke and hate it! They just physically can't stop.
So, I think stopping smokers from smoking is just an unfortunate, lost cause that we can't do anything about (except blame society back then).
The real issue is preventing future smokers. I see the fallacy in this law, but to me it's better than nothing (because I think banning all cigs is simply not an option).
As a Korean American, I think America has come a long way compared to many other countries, like Korea and China, where if I told you about their smoking culture you wouldn't believe me.
All this has nothing to do with the argument, but I think America has done a relatively good job so far in making the younger generation hate cigarettes compared to 100 or 50 years ago and I still have some faith.
I do like your point about how big tobacco will now have even more money to come up with more ways to advertise, but I'd much rather like them to keep making more money off old smokers rather than letting these smaller companies make money off of recruiting new younger smokers. Though, I'm pretty ignorant to actually statistics and how much of an impact all these things really make, so this is just a general, non objective opinion.
In all seriousness, you're right, smoking isn't recreational for most smokers. Banning it will be a nightmare (probably). I think our education program has worked really well here. People know that cigarettes are incredibly dangerous, and fewer people start smoking these days. Thank goodness for that. My grandmother smokes all the time.
hey just wondering......other then making these great videos, do you have a job? If you do.... i was just wondeing how you have time to make a video everyday
Yeah, in Jr. High, kids smoked and sold cigarettes they stole from their parents. I remember people selling them for $1.00 each. I wonder how much they are now in jr. high?
you're like 3 older then me and i remember kids trying to sell cigarettes for like .25/.50 cents each.... im sure it depends on location and the "market." supply + demand... all that jazz.
i knew kids starting highschool that had parents buying for them... pretty ridiculous.... although that's a rare case.
I'm in senior school at the moment (UK) which i'm guessing is your Jr. High or some sort and we get those who smoke selling cigarettes for 50p each, so it's not too different from what they sold when you was at school. Although they did make quiet big profits from it.
But hey, keep the videos coming. The occasional serious video never hurts anyone. ;)
Kretek is just the type, the brand is still just Djarum.
I didn't see primetime flavored mini-cigars today at the gas station. Iwonder if those were covered under the ban. Honestly, they are the thing that should have been banned to deter children since they are about 1/4 the price of cigarettes. I wonder how kids can afford to buy cigarettes....
have you heard about the FDA banning e-cigarettes? they are a cigarette imitating mechanism for helping people quit smoking by vaporizing tobacco flavored nicotine cartidges.... they dont emit traditional smoke...making them eco friendly and less (possibly non?) hazardous to the users health.
im not the most knowledgeable person on this product but im sure u get the idea...
im also sure you can imagine why the FDA would want to ban these...
I tried smoking a cigarette when i was 13 for the first time and i almost threw up. I tried again when i turned 18 with cigars. I smoke every so often when im in the mood but I will never be addicted. Can you still buy flavored cigs overseas and get them shipped over?
Great video! You make great points Zack, and I agree they should be consistent with their laws. It's just unfortunate that because of the money that is generated from cigarettes, they would never ever ban all types of flavors of cigarettes. It's sad that everything in the world is based on money.
The gov must not make enough money off of taxing like they do regular tobacco cigarettes. I don't think the gov wants people to quit they just want their share of the profits. Why not regulate alcohol in the same way if yummy flavors are more appealing to kids? Don't think it will stop kids either way. If kids want to rebel then the more wrong something is then all the more appealing. So it seems they just appear to have a solution that will apiece anti smokers. More people out of work too, yay!
True, it's not about kids at all. I think it's more about the contributions big tobacco makes to politicians, their lobby power. They likely paid a lot of money for this bill to cut out the little guy's competition. It's easy to demonize smokers because our culture sees them as "bad people", but I feel everyone has the right to put whatever they want in their bodies, so long as they do it only at their own risk. Obama is a smoker, by the way. It's very hypocritical.
Many people believe this but studies show they are the same as Marlboros. Eugenol, a chemical in cloves, is an anesthetic, so maybe people who smoke them don't realize the damage they're doing as much and smoke more. Different countries sell different blends of cloves. Djarums in some countries contain much more nicotine and tar than in others. However, normal American cigarettes contain hundreds of additives on top of the natural nicotine, which are designed to make them more addictive.
Even smoking lettuce is harmful. It's mostly the hot smoke that irritates the lungs, and any smoke is harmful. Most cigar and pipe smokers are after the flavor, not a nicotine buzz, so they don't inhale. I knew people who smoke Blacks and they said they don't inhale them. Rather, like pipe smokers, they are just after the flavor. Not inhaling means much less risk to the lungs, and less risk of chemical addiction.
I can't stand cigarettes because of how deadly they are, but I've smoked cigars before. I smoked this summer for the flavor of it, and you're not supposed to inhale. There are no additives or addicting properties in them. But I almost never smoke a cigar.
The reason the FDA is in control now of regulating cigarettes is because they make so much money and what not, the Government cannot just ban all cigarettes all at once, there would be anarchy in the streets. It would represent the addiction Americans have for Cigarettes. But slowly, over time, I think Cigarettes will become banned. Slowly but surely, smoking laws are getting tighter and tighter. If the FDA is in control, it's only a matter of time.
In steps, they have to. It has to be a gradual progression to get harmful Cigarettes under control. This stuff may help Big Tobacco now, but later on down the line, should the FDA decide to cut Menthol Cigarettes, butthurt shall ensue. Other drugs like snuff and other minor smokables will probably remain untouched, but the main target does seem to be Cigarettes. Who knows, anything is possible.
We're going to have to get used to the idea that Corporations run the place - It's no longer a conspiracy, this is just part of the dismantling of the Republic. Our Government is a Plutocracy - TARP was a financial coup, the biggest heist in US history. RJR is all part of that.
When you pack your Chinese made pitch fork and your Chinese made rope don't forget to pack the clove cigarettes

The other option? Hand-rolling, which is exceedingly popular in Europe (taxes on loose tobacco are much lower than on cigs).

I think you did a good job. You kept it pretty light for the subject of smokin tobakee. Thanks for the good info!

yes. lets stop the small tobacco companies from luring young kids into buying their product by making them buy the product from the major tobacco corporations. objective achieved. way to go country.

So there isn't much difference other than the outer layer is no longer paper.

that is pretty crazy. its unbelievable how hipocritical that is and they think nobody is going to notice. speaking as a non-smoker, the economical ramifications of that kinda burns me up too (excuse the pun)! nice to hear your point of view! makes for a nice change of pace for the channel and i thought it was well put whether everyone agrees with you or not. : )

Thanks! I have fairly strong opinions on a lot of things, but I don't really talk about them because politics really seems to divide people. If I find a major issue and speak about a narrow aspect of it, it is much easier to express how I feel and have people be willing to discuss it, even if they disagree.

Juhsayngul 2 years ago
I agree with mostly everyone, but I just don't see any of the comments coming up with any better solutions to the problem. What can the FDA (or anyone) really do?
I strongly believe banning ALL cigarettes is not a plausible solution at all. Smoking isn't (for most smokers) a recreational or leisure activity, it's an addiction. You can't just ban them and expect smokers to stop. Most smokers I know, including my dad, smoke and hate it! They just physically can't stop.
AirplaneFoods 2 years ago
So, I think stopping smokers from smoking is just an unfortunate, lost cause that we can't do anything about (except blame society back then).
The real issue is preventing future smokers. I see the fallacy in this law, but to me it's better than nothing (because I think banning all cigs is simply not an option).
AirplaneFoods 2 years ago 2
As a Korean American, I think America has come a long way compared to many other countries, like Korea and China, where if I told you about their smoking culture you wouldn't believe me.
All this has nothing to do with the argument, but I think America has done a relatively good job so far in making the younger generation hate cigarettes compared to 100 or 50 years ago and I still have some faith.
AirplaneFoods 2 years ago 2
I do like your point about how big tobacco will now have even more money to come up with more ways to advertise, but I'd much rather like them to keep making more money off old smokers rather than letting these smaller companies make money off of recruiting new younger smokers. Though, I'm pretty ignorant to actually statistics and how much of an impact all these things really make, so this is just a general, non objective opinion.
AirplaneFoods 2 years ago 2
Wow, an influx of comments from AirplaneFoods!

Yeah, in Jr. High, kids smoked and sold cigarettes they stole from their parents. I remember people selling them for $1.00 each. I wonder how much they are now in jr. high?
ZackScottFunClub 2 years ago
1.00?!?!! CLEARLY OVERPRICED.
lol.. kidding.
you're like 3 older then me and i remember kids trying to sell cigarettes for like .25/.50 cents each.... im sure it depends on location and the "market." supply + demand... all that jazz.
i knew kids starting highschool that had parents buying for them... pretty ridiculous.... although that's a rare case.
mytitans 2 years ago
I'm in senior school at the moment (UK) which i'm guessing is your Jr. High or some sort and we get those who smoke selling cigarettes for 50p each, so it's not too different from what they sold when you was at school. Although they did make quiet big profits from it.
But hey, keep the videos coming. The occasional serious video never hurts anyone. ;)

I didn't see primetime flavored mini-cigars today at the gas station. Iwonder if those were covered under the ban. Honestly, they are the thing that should have been banned to deter children since they are about 1/4 the price of cigarettes. I wonder how kids can afford to buy cigarettes....

have you heard about the FDA banning e-cigarettes? they are a cigarette imitating mechanism for helping people quit smoking by vaporizing tobacco flavored nicotine cartidges.... they dont emit traditional smoke...making them eco friendly and less (possibly non?) hazardous to the users health.
im not the most knowledgeable person on this product but im sure u get the idea...
im also sure you can imagine why the FDA would want to ban these...

why ban cigs but not alcohol?.while they are no longer allowed to advertise tobacco, every other commercial on tv is a beer commercial
both things can kill you,so why take away one product but keep highly advertising the other???

More people out of work too, yay!
pitznkitz 2 years ago
True, it's not about kids at all. I think it's more about the contributions big tobacco makes to politicians, their lobby power. They likely paid a lot of money for this bill to cut out the little guy's competition. It's easy to demonize smokers because our culture sees them as "bad people", but I feel everyone has the right to put whatever they want in their bodies, so long as they do it only at their own risk. Obama is a smoker, by the way. It's very hypocritical.
AshleyKScott 2 years ago
I've heard that clove cigarettes make the lungs bleed if smoked consistently like a regular cigarette.
I wish I could have given you 15 stars for not smoking those things...
xperimnt 2 years ago
Many people believe this but studies show they are the same as Marlboros. Eugenol, a chemical in cloves, is an anesthetic, so maybe people who smoke them don't realize the damage they're doing as much and smoke more. Different countries sell different blends of cloves. Djarums in some countries contain much more nicotine and tar than in others. However, normal American cigarettes contain hundreds of additives on top of the natural nicotine, which are designed to make them more addictive.
AshleyKScott 2 years ago
Even smoking lettuce is harmful. It's mostly the hot smoke that irritates the lungs, and any smoke is harmful. Most cigar and pipe smokers are after the flavor, not a nicotine buzz, so they don't inhale. I knew people who smoke Blacks and they said they don't inhale them. Rather, like pipe smokers, they are just after the flavor. Not inhaling means much less risk to the lungs, and less risk of chemical addiction.
AshleyKScott 2 years ago
I can't stand cigarettes because of how deadly they are, but I've smoked cigars before. I smoked this summer for the flavor of it, and you're not supposed to inhale. There are no additives or addicting properties in them. But I almost never smoke a cigar.
xperimnt 2 years ago
Cigars have nicotine. nicotine is addictive. They also cause cancer of the mouth. I'm not telling you to quit, I smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.
PsychoMantistle 2 years ago
Cigarettes suck, that's all theres to it!
DivineScheme 2 years ago
Yes they do.
xperimnt 2 years ago
The reason the FDA is in control now of regulating cigarettes is because they make so much money and what not, the Government cannot just ban all cigarettes all at once, there would be anarchy in the streets. It would represent the addiction Americans have for Cigarettes. But slowly, over time, I think Cigarettes will become banned. Slowly but surely, smoking laws are getting tighter and tighter. If the FDA is in control, it's only a matter of time.
10191927 2 years ago
So maybe they are doing it in steps? Next up might be flavored cigars, then next up might be menthols?
ZackScottFunClub 2 years ago
In steps, they have to. It has to be a gradual progression to get harmful Cigarettes under control. This stuff may help Big Tobacco now, but later on down the line, should the FDA decide to cut Menthol Cigarettes, butthurt shall ensue. Other drugs like snuff and other minor smokables will probably remain untouched, but the main target does seem to be Cigarettes. Who knows, anything is possible.
10191927 2 years ago
Smoking just really bugs me, it makes people look so desperate when they HAVE TO have a cigarette.
