The Trappists are the strict observance of the Cistercians not the Carmelites. Those are called the "Discalsed Carmelites." Both the Trappists and the Discalsed Carmelites are of the "strict" observance. The Trappist follow Benedicts rules of monasticism and the Carmelites from St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross who reformed the Carmelites. Elijah is supposedly the founder of the original Carmelites.
Elijah is not the founder of the Carmelites. He is just the model for Carmelites. It was St. Albert who helped form the Carmelites and he was from the Augustinian congregation.
Their own English material speaks of 'Carmelites'. Trappists are an extreme order of Carmelites. I am sorry about the sound Elaine-I need tim to sort it out but have no clue of which it did not come out. Sorry
Trappist (La Trappe) is a term referring to the Cistercian Order, which was a reformation of the Benedictine order. Not related or descended from Carmelites.
