To those wondering about the origins of the song; it is indeed Irish in origin and many old versions specific "there is a man in Galway town will make your heart content".
LOWLANDS OF HOLLAND The night that I was married And lay in marriage bed Up came a bold sea captain And stood at my bedhead Saying, "Rise, arise, new wedded man And come along with me To the lowlands of Holland For to face your enemy"
@Vikingen78 Sorry but its about the English Navy forcing a sailor into service. So where the Irish angle comes in is a bit unclear to me at least. Thats the trouble with these folky songs - everything folky is automatically assumed to be an Irish song -- See Green Fields of France, Shoal of Herrings etc....
The Salmon Leap used to be a Restaurant in Coleraine on the River Bann - not sure if there is any link to this group (incidentally a great version). 2.11 is a shot of Fairhead Co.Antrim (unless I am mistaken). Beautiful song.
@heliodor001 Indeed, it's about the pain of parting for a young couple with the young man sent off to war.
There are many folk songs in a similar vein as this was a common and mostly unwanted occurance.

@MrRVanB I have no idea i'm Dutch u never hear this but it sounds Irish, the landscape is Irish or Brittish.
pyromaniaknl 1 year ago
@pyromaniaknl As far as I know this is a British song which appears in print in 1760 as "The Sorrowful Lover's" , nothing to do with Ireland
It's about a man being pressed ganged to fight in the Anglo–Dutch Wars in the 17th and 18th centuries,
New Holland was a historic name for Australia first applied by the dutch in 1664.

I've heard many sing this, but Celia, your vocals on this are far-and-away the best. Simple, beautiful, and beyond reproach. Thank you for sharing.

Uhhhh... the kid in the song isn't from Holland. He's from Great Britain, probably Scotland. Hence the mountains.
