What makes Kolchaks character so special for me is not that he was brave/fearless etc; but that he was scared sh--tless, but he knew that he was doing it for the common good. Just like real soldiers in battle will acknowledge their fear, but carry on with their job knowing that they are doing what they believe to be the right thing. Kolchak represents a REAL hero
I just watched Let Me In. Anyone think Abby could defeat Skorzeny? I've heard that a vampire's strength increases with age, and Abby is much older than Skorzeny. He's powerful, but so is she. And she's fast as hell.
You might be wondering, "How do you know what a vampire would behave like if no real vampires exist as role models?"
Very simple: Think, "wild beast". Think, "how would a wild beast react if threatened?" Of course, it would hiss, growl, attack--all instinct; NO TALK---in fact, NOT A SINGLE WORD!
I should distinguish here between a "civilized" vampire such as Barnabas Collins, and the more fearsome beast-like ones such as the one portrayed here.
This movie is the closest I have seen of how the media, the public, & the authorities would probably react if there were real vampires!
The acting by Barry Atwater is the closest I have seen of how a geniune vampire living among people would think, behave, and---ultimately, react were he to be confronted!
The hissing & groans as he is confronted---and ultimately killed---WITHOUT ONE WORD being uttered is about as realistic a portrayal as I have ever seen as to what a vampire might be like.
Janos Skorzeny; one of the greatest vampires ever created. And "The Night Stalker" has got to be one of the greatest vampire films ever made. I only hope they don't try re-making this movie. It's a classic that should simply be left alone.
@5:09 Barry Atwater, who played Janos Skorzeny, catches his reflection in the cross and starts to laugh,so they cut to the next scene.I read about this in an article about the making of the movie.
What I absolutely love about this movie the most, is that you buy into it. It doesn't insult your intelligence, even though it is a movie about a vampire running amok in Las Vegas. LOL!
@Crazymike1975 And RIP Dan Curtis, if it wasn't for him. There would of been no Barnabas Collins or Janos Skorzeny. I hope both Johnny Depp and Tim Burton keep the new Dark Shadows movie somewhat true too Curtis' vision. I hated Burton's Planet of the Apes remake. The only good thing was the makeup. But the story needed work. And should of had the hero the only human capable of speaking.
Still one of THE most frightening portrayals of a vampire I've ever seen. He never says a word. I was 5 yrs old when this 1st aired and it scared me shitless.
This was a great series; the remake was, as are most remakes of anything in the last 20 years a bad joke. My only problem: the monsters tended to be too much alike--just almost invulnerable supermen-this vampire has no supernatural powers like Dracula or even Barnabas Collins. Interesting, given Dan Curtis produced this movie.
@RPenta Agreed, most remakes are bad. I watched maybe 3 episodes of the Night Stalker remake. But without McGavin in it, it missed allot. I liked his commentaries/narations during the course of an episode, ect. And yes, some of the original series were bad. I thought the makeup for the Werewolf could of been better. It looked like a guy wearing a cheap halloween mask.
I think remakes suffer from a few general faults besides the particular faults of the individual production; lack of "kayfabe"--making the series campy not taking the story seriously; techno or "Star Wars" short cuts ignoring the importance of setting and atmosphere; ignoring or evening defeying the mythology or lore of the creature like making a vampire not vulnerable to sacred objects; casting actors too young or hip for the roles- characters need great character actors.
@RPenta I agree, I think the only remake that I enjoyed, was the revised Dark Shadows that ran in the 90s. The cast members were old enough too make the stories believeable, yet young enough too garner in a new generation, and watch Ben Cross has Barnabus Collins.
@wheelinthesky300 Which charactervictim was Shelley Forbes in the show? It was a made for tv movie. With commercials it stretched it out too about 90 minutes or 100 minutes. lol
@wheelinthesky300 Well thats interesting, I remember watching her in the hulk episode, Escape from Los Antos, She really changed her hair style, nice. thanks. lol
As a 13 year old boy this part scared the crap out of me back in 1972 when I watched it for the first and only time since then until now,,appreciate you making it available and Ive managed to copy it to dvd with a camcorder and came out amazingly clear,,I remember the main commercial during this show back in the 70's was brill cream " a Little dab of brill cream on your hair ? haha,I loved these shows and have recorded most of them over the years from scifi but never this one, never came on,ever
I was like 9 or ten with I first saw Atwater open the door, fangs blaring. I had too sleep with the light on in my room that nite. My dad joked, if your scared from watching scary movies, then why watch them? I told him, because they were there. LOL. Great memories, thanks for downloading.
One might ask why the bloody policeman doesn't do the staking. He's there to serve and protect. But no, I'll just wave the crucifix around while my drinking buddy picks up the ultimate tab.

Vampires are human beings who became possessed by a demon that craved drinking blood to mock Christ's blessed sacament.
So, the possessed person drank blood.
When the person dies, the demon doesn't release it,.
It continues to mock Christ by reanimating the body.
It rises from the grave and continues it's mockery of all things holy...drinking the blood of Christ and eating His flesh...
Us.

Seems to me Bernie Jenks could've overturned that murder rap.Since when do local authorities have more power than federal authorities like the FBI?

Kolchak must have very big balls, or he must be insane. You go into a suspected vampires lair during the day: not when they are up and about.
Very foolish though not having any Holy water or garlic though on his person.
I believe Hawthorn is very effective in dealing with vampires. Although I don't know what effect it has on them.
Briliant film.

That has to be the worst haircut on any vampire.
That 'do alone would get him noticed and caught.
This film should have been longer than 70 minutes.
And what happens to Shelley Forbes?
Is she bit? Will she have to be destroyed?
