The Source is notoriously unreliable; its membrane keypads were always a source of trouble. However it was Moog Music's first microprocessor controlled synthesizer.
I think this is the best sounding classic moog other than the minimoog. Very expressive. The portamento is great and the LFO go's so much faster than any of the Japanese synths of the time. I have one of these but sadly it doesn't work. I really want to get it fixed as when working, it just sounds great! Anyone know of somewhere in the uk that fixes these?
I had one of these years ago. The instruction manual even had a section on how to look after the wooden parts by using linseed oil! Great sounding but a bit limiting due to only having the one incremental knob to, it was the only way to change the parameters once you'd pressed the silk screen type programming section. Could have done with having knobs and switches all over and not the one dial.
This thing wasn't even made by Bob Moog you know. The Moog name was sold to another company during that era(sorry if you already knew that). It was sold for Radio Shack for god's sake.
@MPrint666 Yeah. In around 1976-77, Moog got bought out by Norlin industries, a fortune 500 company. But as for the Moog being sold by Radio Shack, I think you're thinking of the Concertmate MG-1.
If you are bad mouthing the MG-1 I doubt you've actually played it. I played it back to back with a moog rogue. I sold the rogue and got a midi converter for the concertmate. It's a good synth for the price. Now the source is a beast. It and the MG1 both make newer analog synth's like the novation bass station sound really weak.
I think the MG-1 is a neat little synth, but I prefer the Rougue. I just gotta have the classic mod. wheels ;) But that's just my taste. I prefer the sound too. Just my taste.
@MARANTZamp: I think the Minimoog would be considered the most popular synth for bass ever made. However, the Source has its fans. It's a nice sounding synth, slightly limited range but good sonics. The membrane switches are a cause for concern as is the lack of MIDI. These days a Moog Little Phatty is probably the smarter choice for similar money.
The Little Phatty ain't bad...but i've noticed that it, and the voyager don't have some of the warmth that the old moog have...but at least they have Midi.

Naked with a moog... and a box of pasta ! :)

@shawnster123 How much did you sell it for? And how much do these synths go for?

what a moog with no knobs ....get fucked

I'm with the asshole, no knobs = what the hell
elanmak 2 years ago
each button has a single function! NO MENUS to wade through...
These buttons + the data wheel make it just as quick to edit as if it had knobs.
try it..you'll see
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
i know the jx synths are the same way but its simply not fun at all.
UnchainTheNight1 1 year ago
This is not like programming a DX-7, which is a nightmare.
Having the single function buttons on the moog source, is almost as quick/user-friendly as having the knobs.
I have synths with knobs, so I know what i'm talking about.
Plus, you only really need to edit ONE parameter at a time anyway....

I think you forgot the memorymoog :)
I got both and the memorymoog is just antoher world, when programmed well....

Ah the Memorymoog. I would love to have a go on one of those! Happy programming :)

Sounds great, the interface is just so uninspiring... They did a way better job with this concept with the Little Phatty

He programmed the synthesizer to provide a continuously sweeping envelope.

Rippin bro...just rippin!! Sounds like Emerson, Lake and Palmer or even alot of NU Skool breaks type stuff. Just slower...

true...but the buttons each have only one function, so it's fine.
I have this synth, and the one knob works just fine for it.

Actually one of the worst sounding moog's IMO.

true...I had a novation bass station a few years ago..piece of shit next to a moog source--NO COMPARISON

bullshit...it sounds just as moogish as the other moogs.
A lot of people consider it to be the best synth for bass ever made.

Voltor07 3 years ago
it's not as unreliable as people say..mine works great.
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
From what I've SEEN, they are severely lacking reliability. Maybe yours works great, but a vast number of them have bad buttons.
Voltor07 2 years ago
that doesn't matter much anymore, as there are 3rd party companies manufacturing the membrane panel now.
The Source is as close to a minimoog sound you are gonna get...and it's actually BETTER and tighter for basslines.
MARANTZamp 2 years ago
They do have a killer sound...won't argue there. I think I'll stick with my Little Phatty centered rig for now, though. ^_^

It was used by Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode on their tours up until 1983. (from what I have read) Great little synth!

Toontracks EZ drummer. Used the Vintage set (Ludwig Kick and Black Beauty snare)

do you know what they use now?
i saw a nord lead 2x in their studio once... so far it's the only synth i've ever played in person that i could get to sound like their instruments
