Yeah, I think you're right about that but by the time he did it was too little too late. Gillies just whacked O'Reilly in this round. But as I mentioned in the later rounds that were posted on You Tube: You have got to give O'Reilly props & respect; He didn't back down from Jethro: I'm an Islander fan and I'm saying this.
each landed a good punch the jab by clark lands as does a left by terry if you pop it frame by frame you can see the punches land, im also a bruins fan still at 46 and i see nothing wrong with gilles in the hall of fame
He deserves the Hall of Fame for sure. His presence on the ice made many a men cower. He could play, and he could protect the stars on that team. All Islanders from that era should be in the HOF. The whole team should have been put in. Woot Woot!
@cjf7991 Yeah I know, cjf. What I meant was he 'deserves' to be there. Some people don't think he deserves it bc he didn't put up the numbers. What a guy to have on a team.
With all respect to Gillies fighting abilities, what the fuck is he doing in the hockey hall of fame???!!! That's like putting Semenko in the Hall of fame for protecting Gretzky. Gillies was a decent player, but no hall of famer.
Gillies was no goon as he never had 100 penalty minutes in a season. Gillies played in a few all star games and in the late 70's to early 80's he was one of the best LWs in hockey. There weren't very many good LWs at that time. Sememko scored 65 goals in his career. Gillies scored over 300.
Maybe Gillies is a questionable HOFer but he was all star caliber.
You are right, it was near the end of the 1st period. The first fight had started only about 3 minutes into the first period. O'Reilly won that first one; Gillies won this one.
he was the greatest goon of all time RULES WHAT RULES he had no problem at all with anger managment

Terry looked a bit too excited going into this one and jumped up and opened himself up to a beating.

As an impartial observer of both teams, Gillies wins this for sure.
Not sure how anyone could say otherwise.
So far I've seen Gillies not beat him twice. Looking for the 3rd fight now.

OK, Round Three: Big Win For Jethro here - including a delayed KO. Very Nice!
As three rounds: It's Gilles 2, O'Reilly 1.

The first shot Gillies lands at 37 seconds; that one looks like it glanced O'Reilly more than hit him flush.

Draw. Nothing landed. Slip and a fall.

Nothing landed? Take a look at the first punch from Gillies. It hits O'Reilly in the face, right around his eye.

did you see that left jab, that threw terry right off!

Did you see the referee stand between them and then let them go at it? Just like a boxing match. But it pleases the common people.
