Wardell Quezerque wrote this and many other great New Orleans songs. It was considered the "Creole Beethoven". He passed away Tuesday, Sept. 6. American music will miss him.
@Ostee1 Silkk the Shocker probably appreciated the song too....so much that he sampled the original version which was made popular by the Olympia Brass Band.
basically it's a jam on the progression for 'my babe', which will probably will have bee derived from somewhere else. still, great american music. love it.
@thailow117 This is an old New Orleans standard. Although props must be given to Willie Dixon and Little Walter for a great song and performance in "My Babe" in 1955, AMF was one of those songs passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. The first time it was recorded was by Wardell Quezergue (Arranged and co wrote) and Smokey Johnson in 1965. It is a standard Mardi Gras Song and is arranged in the "Second Line" syncopated rhythm. If the used "My Babe" they've never mentioned it.
i love this video...more and more..& i love the touch of dixieland with the clarinet...this is such a great complilation of styles and personalities just MESHING...OMG. yes yes yes!!!
had to go south to San Francisco during the commute rush- and the commute lane- which is only 2 passengers minimum- was mostly empty...thousands rushing in their cars, buses empty (in the commute lane) to get to SF where NO parking places await them, garages more expensive than a hotel stay...and then our plastics use. Yes, we share the blame but BP pulled the trigger
i like it its another level. mos def does it all! plus a nice gesture gulf coast has really had it rough over the last few years, but America is a resilient people. Peace!
Normally it really bugs me when people say things like "four people missed the like button" or just talk about the like and dislike buttons in general. In this case though, I really can't understand why any one would dislike this 'cause one, it is a really great piece of music and nice to listen to, and two, even if you don't like it people should really be trying to support everyone who's suffering cause of the gulf oil spill and this is trying to help!
I was in the store Metropark & they had this playing on the screen. I had no idea what it was for but I'm glad I found out. I'd happily donate! Thanks for sharing this with us, (:
This is some fine music!! Amy Goodman played it during break on her Democracy Now[dot]Com show for Thursday, Oct 21, 2010. So I started looking for it and found it here! Where can we buy it? I remember Mos Def from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! That was a fun movie!
This is what I'm, talkin' about! The new, the old...the left the right...the black the white...when you put things together properly, the end result is magic. I'm so happy I came across this video. Thanks "supidDOPEMedia" for gettin' it out there.
just picked up the song on Utube after hearing it on NPR. I must admit I have been looking for this sound since the early days of Ben Harper. Hope to hear more singing in the future.
Love the song and love New Orleans! Thank you Mos Def, Lenny, Tim, and the Preservation Brass Band (esp. Alan Jaffe for writing the song). We will pull through this crisis as we pulled through Katrina - together.
@TrueFire8181 Ya, we all use oil and we should be much more conscientious about using less. BUT that has nothing to do with Bp's CRIMINAL negligence when it comes to drilling safely.
Plus, these oil transnationals have huge political power and affect policy that has to do with oil use in society.
GREAT SONG! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.... But it is our fault! I've been reading FU BP and to some extent it is true. However, we demand the oil for our cars, SUVs & trucks. Which normally only carry one person. We are selfish & this is everyone's fault unless you don't have a car, use electricity or oil synthetics. Yes BP did it. But that is how they making a living. We demand it and they supply it. SO SHAME ON US! Lets do something to fix the mess our demand & need helped to create!
@TrueFire8181 You're correct in general but here are some specifics. The cost of a higher performance "blowout preventer" (the part that ultimately failed) was about $2.5M over the cost of the one they ended up using. That's 2/3 of ex-chairman Tony Hayward's salary and bonus for 2009. One guy got enough to retire on twice the rest of us got a mess that will last for decades.
2 X DOPE!!! what a way to rock it! Big up Ben on the tuba who runs this establishment for many years & Pres Hall Band doin it every week!!!! Tryna rock the remix right now... oooooh it's tough to remix perfection! Here we go...
Definitely a fresh, new, and poignant take on a New Orleans Brass standard in my opinion. Mos and Lenny were bonuses along side Trombone Shorty. Mos has responded to many causes here, so definitely props out to him. Lenny truly loves this city and it shows constantly. FU BP!!!! I mean that with the utmost sincerity.

Love it but it is a complete rip off of a scene from Treme, surprised no-one else has mentioned it. Maybe that's why Lenny looks bored ha ha? Great idea though but like someone pointed out, were all ultimately to blame unless we use canoes and make our own soap...
@euanmitchell2008 You DO realize they're in Preservation Hall, don't you? Everything filmed there looks like it was filmed there, and the PH Jazz Band might have played in both (though the players vary at times). And yeah, we are all to blame; that rock they mention is on one side and the hard place is on the other. Let's all do what we can and it wouldn't hurt to download the song and give a buck to the cause.
Tim Robbins is a very good musician and singer (see his movie "Bob Roberts" to see what I mean), but he didn't seem to be doing anything in this recording. Was he involved in rewriting the lyrics or maybe in production, somehow?
I wonder if this will be used on a credit play-out during a future episode of of Treme. It's a bit anachronistic to when the show takes place, so we won't see it in the series proper, but I could easily see it being used over some closing credits. Thematically, it' still appropriate.

it ain't my fault--great old song written by smokey johnson, one of fats domino's drummers and one of the first to move second line/parade drumming to the kit, a progenitor of zigaboo and countless other great new orleans drummers. he still lives in nola.
