In my opinion, this is one of the greatest climactic film endings in the history of filmmaking. And it is what I believe to be the ending of one of the top films of all time.
Long live the memory of Col. Robert Gould Shaw and all of the brave men that fought and died in the name and in faith of a belief that this country could one day look past the color of a man's skin and see the inside of his heart.
I can only hope, if not merely wish, that I could ever do such good for mankind.
Why does the guy with the glasses always die in these movies? Flyboys, The Mummy, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, King Kong, etc. . . The guy wearing glasses always dies!!!
@straightouttadc Yeah I have to agree w/ @ActionJaxson28 Miracle at St. Anna was pretty awful...the best parts of the movie was the beginning where Negron killed that guy in the post office & Michael Ealy banging that Italian chick...that's it. Spike Lee could have made a better movie than that.
Can anybody please tell me the name of this classical song and its original composer. I don't mean "Charging Fort Wagner" that's just the name they use for the soundtrack of the movie. I want to know the name of the original song...the year it was composed...and by whom. Thank you very kindly to all and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...........thanks again!!!
@Maestro2500 yea thats what i meant lol! wrong speech impetiment....thats quite a name, Jupiter Sharts lol. he was cool though. "W-w-we ready, colonel"
As a veteran I just want to comment that what those men did at Ft Wagner was unbelievable. Men who were literally fighting for their very freedom and the freedom of their families charged the walls of Wagner in the face of canon and rifle fire. Its the only scene from a movie that every time I watch it brings me to tears. From my heart I thank the 54th and their valiant sacrifice for freedom.
i found it interesting that even though col. shaw was killed instead of being discouraged his men became angry and surged over the walls they were the only regiment to make it into the fort
@XxxSakura101 - Hamburger Hill was not anti-war, infact it was very critical towards peace activists, the media misinformation etc. during the 60's. @XxxSakura101 - I still don't understand why you think Hamburger Hill portrayed soldiers in a bad light? I've seen it several times and get the exact opposite. It didn't glorify war but the movie itself was dedication to the soldiers who took Hill 937. It even attacks the media and the anti-war sentiment.
to those who understand the cards that they were delt this movie shows that anyone can overcome the odds at any moment in their lives and be recongnize for their positive accomplshment!!!
Major Forbes just is awesome taking them up and over the wall. I watch this movie over and over again just hoping the ending changes somehow and the 54th takes the fort.
Frederick Douglass son (who was in the 54th) won the medal of honor for retrieving the Union flag that was left behind in the battle as well.
This battle distinguished the 54th in so many ways, they where still very Green soldiers at the time of the battle, but outperformed veteran regiments in the rest of the Brigade.
I think they felt a need to outperform everyone else so everyone would recognize them.
This was the most numerically lopsided battle in the war, fort Wagner was just a nightmare to try to take. Ironically the Union finally took it by walking in unopposed only a few weeks after the battle..
The 54th where the first regiment in and the last one out, suffering 40% loses and making it to the center of the fort for a brief time before they where forced to retire.
If you're born in Africa and you become an American citizen, you are then African-American. Simply because you're black does not mean you're "african american". My family/ancestors are from Europe, does that mean I'm European-American? Of course not. If you're born in the United States of American, you're American and nothing else.
This makes me proud to be an African American Man. G-d of our weary years G-d of our silent tears Thou who has brought us thus far on the way Thou who has by thy might lead us into the light keep us forever on the path we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places G-d where we met thee Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world we forget thee Shadowed beneath thy may we for-ever stand True to our G-d True to our Native Land Here's to you 54th *raises glass* You did give them hell.
We watched this in class and I was like "WTF? Shaw died? Ok that's fine... DENZEL WASHINGTON IS DEAD? WTF Okay, here we go, THOMAS GOT STABBED!!! JESUS CHRIST. Come on, yeah, their going, there gonna make it and kill all of the Confederates, yeah! Hey look, they found the cannons, they're gonna sneak up from behind and capture the battery and that's gonna allow the other regiments to get through, yay! Oh wait, wtf why are they pointed towards... WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!
@BuffaloSoldiers2037 yes, it's tragic. These scene always makes be cry, in part from the loss of the characters we love, and in part from their vigorous charge. A part of the scene was ruined for me a bit back in highschool because some girl screamed out "OH NO! SOMEONE SHAT DANZEL!!!" Well, at least she got into the moment and got interested in some of her own history.
This movie inspired my interest in the war and also in the USCTs that fought in the war. There were many other BLACK regiments that fought in more bloody and more decisive battles than Ft. Wagner in the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the James. The 54th Gets alot of Credit because of the extensive writing of Col. Shaw and Col. Hallowell on the regiment. The regiment btw was far from wiped out.. it went on to fight other battles in Florida (Olustee) and elsewhere.
@chapdog82 You might be interested in the Battle of New Market Heights. 16 African Americans earned the Medal of Honor in that battle. Also the Battle of Fort Fisher. Black regiments helped capture the last remaining Confederate seaport and the largest Confederate field fortification in the entire war. The battle of Fort Fisher was a combined army/navy operation that would become the largest amphibious operation until World war 2. Altogether 9,000 union troops, 2,000 Union sailors and marines
Yeah FOrt Harrison/New Market Hieght was a blood bath. A deadly assault. My personal favorite battles to look up are that of 1st and 2nd Kansas Colored Reigments in the west. HOney Springs and Jenkinsons Ferry were two victories with those regiments as the chief players. Also the assault on Fort Blakely in Mobile, AL in 1865 where USCTS's played a huge role and finally the Battle of Milikends Bend (in the Vicksburg Campaign btw). Very bloody and hand to hand.
@chapdog82 and 1, 500 Confederate soldiers would fight in the battle. Why on earth is this campaign that rivaled that of Vicksburg and Atlanta not remembered?
They sent alot of USCT's down there to SC because they felt they could handle the climate better then Northern White Regiments. It freed some white regiments up to fight in other theatres with a more "suitable" climate and terrain. They assumed ALL black men were used to tropical terrain. Even ones born and bread in New England. lol
as a man who lives in Louisiana I can tell that Climate was a huge factor.
I went to Vermont and the UK a few years back and let me say without all that humidity I felt lighter than air. I imagine a lot of federal troops suffered the opposite effect down here.
fuck the south, everything that Sherman did to you you absolutely deserved, we should have burned all your fields, thrown your troops into prison, and hanged Lee, the man was an arrogant ass who deserved a far worse fate then he got, most beloved general in american history, HE STOOD AGAINST EVERYTHING AMERICA IS FOR!!!!!! you can take your KKK and your King Cotton and your Dixie and rot in hell with it you low lying southern bastards
Your hatred of southern people for events that are over 140 years old is foolish. The South did not stand against EVERYTHING America is for; that's why when they split from the Union they declared ALL UNITED STATES LAWS that did not conflict with the CSA Constitution would still apply to the new nation. Lee was no war criminal; ass for destroying their fields/throwing troops into prison, they would have to be readmitted to the Union sometime; then you'd just waste money building everything back.
10-1, i think your wrong there, only about 1200 or 1500 confedrate soldiers occupied fort wagner, only 12 of them died on july 11th and 174 on july 18th
And anyways the 54th fought better than other units that served that were white. The white units that were suppose to support the 54th pulled out and basically left them all to die. And the most insane part, they fought for a country who couldn't give a hell less about them. That is pure bravery. Think before you speak, and SirGuzzBuzz is right, they were attacking a fortified position that was a nightmare from a strategy stand point.
@Antihippie24 I have to disagree with your assessment. The white units supported the 54th as best they could and as a matter of fact the two following white units (6th Connecticut and 48th New York) actually suffered more casualties then the 54th. Both units lost their commanding officers.
Look, I have a BA in history and I minored in military history, the 54th was the victims in the battle, the rest of the army was to fall in behind the 54th but failed to do so, they retreated with out being placed in to action and left the 54th to die. The 54th fought bravery and for anyone to judge their efforts is insane, I want to see you in a battle like this and when you come back, IF you came back then talk shit. I do have to say I serve in the army because of this movie... Inspired me.
The confederates lost less than 100 men and the union lost all just about LOL how perfetic, they also had heavie navy support, also dude why do you have to be so sad whos cheaking my spelling nerd, the grammer is fine :D, but you could get your facts right tho, adleast I have facts unlike some who have to insult small miss typeing mistakes thats low dude.
its "losing" not "lossing" you fucking idiot. Why don't you take into account that the confederates are defending a fort with entrenched positions, and they facing THOSE odds was near impossible. God damn your dumb
it wasn't about vengeance, they all witnessed their commander run into a hail of gunfire shouting their regiment's name. This man did so much for them and they all loved him.
Col. Shaw's final deed for them was giving his life so that they could have the courage to try and complete their mission, facing impossible odds.
@GameCenter2009 Uh huh. GameCenter, the usual ratio of offensive to defensive men and equipment in any invasion is about 10 to 1. Now add in a fortified position. Do the math.
the hand-hand combat between the 54th and the confederates with a latin hymn to the scene makes me wish i was there, RIP Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th
God I love this film. Always cuts me up seeing it. It conveys so many emotions. Bravery, courage, humanity, friendship. Makes me want to be a better person. One of the great films.
They would of won in this movie cause there was like 800 men in the for then they all died weird but great movie

minigun20 2 years ago
I heartily agree.
NationalGuardCrazy 2 years ago
Your hatred of southern people for events that are over 140 years old is foolish. The South did not stand against EVERYTHING America is for; that's why when they split from the Union they declared ALL UNITED STATES LAWS that did not conflict with the CSA Constitution would still apply to the new nation. Lee was no war criminal; ass for destroying their fields/throwing troops into prison, they would have to be readmitted to the Union sometime; then you'd just waste money building everything back.
Dauntless07 2 years ago
@Dauntless07 I agree. These people currently living down in the south had nothing to do with the events 140 years ago

@minigun20 Your ignorant comment about the South and the Confederacy is proof that Northern postwar brainwashing worked to a "T".

10-1, i think your wrong there, only about 1200 or 1500 confedrate soldiers occupied fort wagner, only 12 of them died on july 11th and 174 on july 18th
tysonkat1 2 years ago
And anyways the 54th fought better than other units that served that were white. The white units that were suppose to support the 54th pulled out and basically left them all to die. And the most insane part, they fought for a country who couldn't give a hell less about them. That is pure bravery. Think before you speak, and SirGuzzBuzz is right, they were attacking a fortified position that was a nightmare from a strategy stand point.
Antihippie24 2 years ago
@Antihippie24 I have to disagree with your assessment. The white units supported the 54th as best they could and as a matter of fact the two following white units (6th Connecticut and 48th New York) actually suffered more casualties then the 54th. Both units lost their commanding officers.
edavismookie25 1 year ago

GameCenter2009 2 years ago
its "losing" not "lossing" you fucking idiot. Why don't you take into account that the confederates are defending a fort with entrenched positions, and they facing THOSE odds was near impossible. God damn your dumb

Wow some vengence the fucking lost, they all died lol trying to take the fort, union losses ALL, confederate 0 losses after the movie ends lol
GameCenter2009 2 years ago
it wasn't about vengeance, they all witnessed their commander run into a hail of gunfire shouting their regiment's name. This man did so much for them and they all loved him.
Col. Shaw's final deed for them was giving his life so that they could have the courage to try and complete their mission, facing impossible odds.
btw, your grammar sucks...noob.
SirGuzzBuzz 2 years ago
Impossible odds?, idiot they outnumbered them 10 to 1 in the battle, they FAILED TO TAKE THE FORT.
GameCenter2009 2 years ago
Still lossing outnumbering them hahahaa.
GameCenter2009 2 years ago
@GameCenter2009 There are many battles that I could cite where numbers mean nothing.
edavismookie25 1 year ago
@GameCenter2009 Uh huh. GameCenter, the usual ratio of offensive to defensive men and equipment in any invasion is about 10 to 1. Now add in a fortified position. Do the math.
nyc14gauge 1 year ago
@nyc14gauge It's 10:1 for a fortified position.

Glad the South won his battle because my great great grandfather was there and fought for the South at this very battle.
NautyKnight 2 years ago
they may have won the battle, but they still lost the war. and you should still give respect for the 54th

The fall of Colonel Gould Shaw, hmm. Rage brings out the best in men, even though it's just a movie. Sure is a great depiction of this battle.

Thing is Robert fell inside the Fort his men fought and clawed their way in to be with him.
