Seems everyone has a story of loss. My Uncle Donald, my dad's brother, was killed in an airplane crash in WWII--this song reminds me of him. He used to call me his sweetheart when I was only 4. .Leslita37: I am the man in the red shirt you mentioned in your post. I told Elton the every time I heard Daniel I thought of my friend, who died in a car accident at the age of 19. The boy was named Danny Michaels and we were from Syracuse, NY. And I asked him if he would sing Daniel for me and my friend and Elton John was gracious enough to sing the song. Tonight, I thought of Danny again, the Danny of so many years ago, and I came on here and he lives if only for a few minutes.

scn906, I once read that this song lyrics were inspired on a true story. A child whose brother flied his fight plane towards Spain (can't remember what war).

Even though I didn't know so much English at the time I heard it for first time the melody and his singing moved me deeply. Today I searched for it to show it to my Lebanese Bro in Spirit, whose name is Daniyyel. Songs like this one are a TREASURE.

The original keyboard part was played on a Fender Rhodes, which is the sound you are hearing from Elton's piano. In this case it is the VintageCase patch from the Yamaha Motif ES Rack.
