Seeing the video inspired the group to go fight Lavos. However, if they FIGHT Lavos and succeed, the video will NEVER be made, meaning that the group would NOT be inspired to go fight Lavos, and thus Lavos lives - them seeing the video (or hell, actually being in that version of that era) means that they would eventually fail.
I don't really agree, but I like the idea that it's a constant thing draining the planet...but I tend to prefer villans that actually have personalities, generally

Lavos' first introduction. That beast is as malevolent as any video game villain, like Kefka, Sephiroth, and the Organization XIII, could ever be.
