the least they could do is play the game with death-row prisoners so that we can go back to executing the losing team. there would be some real excitement and purpose then.
@mellyvel1 the only similarities is kicking the ball once in a while. theres a hoop, no net. you bring ball into play by giving it to the other team. theres no headers or a keeper. The first evidence of anything football like was in ancient Greece. The closest thing to football today was that invented in England.
I am taking anthropology classes and I have been taught that the leader of the losing team was sacrificed. Not the winning team. Also it would be a team from a region and the other team would be captives caught from a battle and forced to play. But I guess it all depends on what region we are talking about.
Actually, BBoughton is right - The Mayans sacrificed the losers of the ball game, not the winners. They sacrificed the leader of the losing team, just like they sacrificed captives from battle to the gods (I'm writing an essay on it for college).
Well i guess it can depend .. cuz ive been to coba ( a mayan village) and the touristic guide was explaining to us that it was the leader .. the won that makes the "goal" ,, that was sacrificed ..

The winning team would be sacrifed, not the losing team. They belived it was an honor to win and be sacrificed and return as a god

back in day the losing team was actually sacraficed, and specifically the captian's head was cut off. now thats some hardcore shit!
