i really cant understand all the negative comments about judy, what the fuck!!! i would love to hear you even try and sing this song, shirley bassey heap of shit !!!
Why always trying to find who is the best singer for a given song? It depends on the person that hear the singer: If you are more moved by voice then yes Shirley bassey sing it with more voice, if you want more interpretation then Julie gives more interpratation, yes and is close to the original French song: Et maintenant, Gilbert Becaud.
Judy is amazing here. years ago as a kid i also knew her mainly from singing over the rainbow and didnt really understand why people were mesmerized. I didnt get it until after i read Gerald Franks's biography in 99/2000. then little by little i discovered her all over as an adult. that's when i understood and got it. also reminds me of my mom who was a big fan. God rest both their souls!
Guarnieri... I was never a Judy garland fan and was only familiar with her singing over the rainbow. I discovered upon her and Liza singing live during their performance in London. I must have spent hours discovering and listening to just about every song and performances . Her performance seen in this video clipping displays the one and only performer whom body language, emotions and spectacular voice is why garland was the best and 45 yrs later, still the best. Garland is still earning reco
How can anyone compare Missis Judy Garland and the émotion that she gave to us to Pétula who can't sing and who has no saoul ????? I am french so I heard Pétula wowww she is nothing compare to Judy!!
The best recording of this song singing it as only Judy Garland sings it is on the live recording at the Palladium .She kicks ass on this she tore my heart out as I sat and heard it for the first time.WOW is all I can say she is haunting here!!! Makes me want badly to have been there for these wonderful performances of Judy Garland.
@joeyjosephs You make a good observation regarding the different singing and performing styles of Garland and Bassey. In my opinion, Bassey is a pastiche of the great female singers of the 20th Century; she's basically an impersonator. Garland is her own person in everything she ever did. She not only sang, but she interpreted a song. Emotions are invoked in me whenever I listen to Garland, she stirs me up. Bassey leaves me cold..
She is divine. The voice makes you crie because she had a wonderfull voice but not only. She had this little something that only the big star have call: talent
Judy was Brilliant! People throw the word "genius" around to freely today. This Woman is the visual definition of the word "Genius". She knew how to sell a song and when she sang she lived it and always made us feel as though she was singing to each of us individually. This Woman, is STILL the Greatest Entertainer the World has ever had.
Have everything from the two great ladies and experienced Garland once as a teen in concert and Bassey too many times to count over the years yet always felt "What Now My Love" belongs to Judy & heard the composer considers her version definitive...never will forget first hearing it on London Palladium lp and played it endlessly...passionate Garland performance comes from the depths of her soul and can never be topped! Same with "It's Yourself", no contest but Shirley is awesome still...
No one ever did this song better than Judy; I love Ms. Bassey; great performer and singer, but if you listen to Shirley, as with most every other singer of the last half of the 20th Century, they all owe a lot of their style to this lady, and most of them admit it. Shirley's style, in particular, is very reminiscent of Judy's. The cart does not come before the horse, as they say.
she can sing this way better i have it on my mp3 player and judy sings it a million times better than this version this is bad video but thank you anyways i still love it
by technical standards, shirley bassey's version is better... much better... BUT there's more to a song than singing it well with all dynamics in place, proper breath support, etc etc... there is something about judy garland singing this song; especially during this time-frame when things really weren't going very well for her... i think it's a perfect fit... and though i know that a lot of people will disagree, this performace (in my opinon) is the best and most fitting version of this song...
On a Sunday the 22nd of June 1969, The World woke up to the News of Judy Garland's death. The news sent shock waves across the entire planet & for the 7 days the media paid homage to " A Great Lady who had the Ultimate Interview"! Judy, Your fans still mourn your passing. I have the comfort of knowing your spirit was embraced by GOD & that HE showed you HIS infinite peace & all that heaven has too offer you. U brought a lot of joy to me & I thank God for creating you. RIP on this 6/22/10
Bassey could not lick the bottom feather of Judy's dress--even Judy a few years from death and used-up still had better timing, clarity, tone, and charisma than her "imitators" could ever hope to possess. Bassey could not even touch this. Compared to Garland at her genuine peak (and it was a long peak ... 1935-1961) , Bassey goes up in smoke. Bassey was/is more like Liza Minnelli--lots of great hollering and pomp ... but no beauty at all in the voice. Big DIFF.
@Vengeance509 Your sentiments are so true. Bassey in my opinion is simply an imitator who has managed to get away with it all these years. Technically, Bassey is good, no question, but for me she lacks substance, charisma and, essentially, vulnerability. Garland's performances are charged with a kind of electricity that sizzled whenever she sang. She had a force, a power that was offset by a vulnerability, which evoked in the listener an emotional synchronization; we felt it not just heard it.
Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion (and Dame Shirley's version is marvellous). For me, the Dame's version always seems more of a tribute to Judy than anything else as the orchestrations are so similar
Agree 100%. And in my view, right now, at age 72, Dame Shirley is singing as well as she ever has. If fact, for me, she's singing BETTER than ever. Her recent Electric Proms appearance was simply magnificent. She was in wonderful voice throughout, sang a fantastic mixture of old and new material and looked absolutely sensational.
@mandeley The elctric proms with Shirley is once in a lifetime show. I still can´t get it out of my mind. When i saw the first time i just gasped. I don´t understand that Shirley at the end after a long show, sings Goldfinger, is able to takes those highnotes. Few artist can do that today. Shirley gives me goosebumps all over when she sings The Performance of my life on the electric proms show. Time just stands still in the audience. Shirley is very moved by the lyrics.
shirley had more time to practice. i saw a james bond movie with shirley singing the title song, i thougt it was judy, but she was long dead. who came first?
This Ladies and Gentlemen is what real singing is! No back up dancers No gimmicks no making out with other performers or shoving faces in crotches! The voice is impecable. Flawless. The only problem is she kept smiling through it all -- and that takes away from the drama and sorrow of the song. Seems as if she was more concerned about how she looked rather than her performance.
i think she was smiling due to the fact that she was able to pull off the song during what was best described as a very rough time (vocally and otherwise)... if i were her, i would be smiling, too-
@CSPATL Judy's smiling through even heartbreak songs was, I think, a nervous gesture. For me, it never detracts from the emotional impact that is stirred up in me when I listen to her 'big' numbers like WNML. But I totally get what you mean, and wonder what other people think about it..?
When this music started when Judy would do the song in her shows, I got such a tingle up my spine. It was an exciting in-person number, and is exciting here. Check out Jim Johnson's Judy Database. It's a great site. Wayne
This is the best version I have heard-but another comes VERY close, and that's the version Judy did in Philadelphia in July 1968. And NO, Judy did not make that dress, AdamMichaelMercer, unless you were trying to be funny (you didn't succeed).
Oh, it is so nice to see people disagree in a mature fashion without foul language and putting down others. This was one of my favorite versions (still is) but Connie Francis' version blew me away...
Of course, we have to understand (and forgive) all of Judy's problems before a critique. This is Judy in fine form, a little plump--as nature intended--and strong voiced. But she never, ever quite nailed this song. By the time it came to her, the voice had suffered a LOT. That last note is a killer, and even her best rendition falls short at the climatic moment. I think it would have suited her better to try it as a ballad. That said, she is very good here--obviously healthy.
I guess that's just something we're gonna have to disagree on. To my mind (and ear)Judy's version of this song is THE definitive version (as Gilbert Becaud was once quoted as saying)and she nails that climactic note perfectly. Perfect orchestration too. But God preserve us from a world where we all agree on everything
I think her tight husky voice works well with this performance. She comes across as a thrilling dynamic natural performer here. She nailed this song for many of us here.
And I won't disagree strenuously with the majority who feel as you do. She is strong and excellent here. But, even at her peak, Judy did not always make the best musical choices, often going for songs, or arrangements that showed off her volume, rather than her exquisite subtlety. But this is nit-picking. She sang this song and she was more than okay during this era. Should have kept the weight.
If Judy had never ever sung this song we would all be wondering today what it would have sounded like...We should be so glad she did however and I have always been thankfull for that!...she sounds on top of her game here for 1966 and looks good too from what I can see.
I love this performance of Judy's - vocally so impressive (and exciting)... But, for some reason, I find the Jack Paar show (albeit, in a sort of horrific vocal condition) more mesmerizing - more dramatic, more real. Not to lessen THIS performance ('cause it's terrific), but the Jack Paar one? Tough choice...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
not sure what this correspondent means by "horrific vocal condition" when they refer to judy's singing on the jack parr show. Judy's voice was like an instrument; however, she did not have the luxury of resting or fixing that, like say a violin or clarinet that needs occassionally to be mended. She was human, with a human being's larynx, which sometimes didn't make the mark - what a crime!
It's all so different - in hindsight. Put yourself back in time - 1964. We hadn't seen Garland on TV since her great TV series. Then we see her on Jack Paar Show. Since we'd seen her last (we know now - but didn't know at the time) she'd had her stomach pumped, causing vocal damage, and had been told by doctors not to perform for at least a year... But only weeks later, comes the Jack Paar Show. Her voice is noticeable different - and, at the time, was shocking (no other word for it).
thanks for your courteous response to my post. Well,i don't think i assumed you didn't dislike garland or her looks: I was referring in the main to how scrutinized her looks were by the 'critics' out there, even to this day. It got her down and she couldn't do right for doing wrong - it ultimately exhausted her. Her talent was sadly undervalued by the entertainment business.
i personally don't think bassey is in the same league as garland. For me, hearing/watching bassey perform i am unmoved emotionally, acutely aware of her barking out songs and waving her arms around; i think she is a fake.
I have to agree, they are perhaps the best. Being that they recorded many of the same songs such as this one (Bassey first) and that they were friends (Shirley more the student and Judy the mentor) makes watching both performers even more special. Two great artists!!
Ah Judy...whe was so emotional, so giving and hid nothing. No pretense whatsoever. Always loved her signature bow with her leg crossed back. What a legendary performer and loving woman.
Thank you so much for putting this up. Nice to see Perry Como too. ;)
Magnificent performance from Judy finds her looking and sounding great...soulful & moving, this is a great performance from a legend who is beyond compare...Bravo Judy!
The last time I saw Janet Jackson at the Superbowl she had her breast hanging out to compensate for her lack of any real talent.......Ill take a hand over a mouth anyday !!!
As she draws out that last note, she has her hand very close to her mouth. I think post 1964 she was never too sure what would come out and had tricks to handle her sadly unreliable instrument.
I don't think it had anything to do with her being unsure of what would come out. She hit it perfectly, as she knew she would. That was just judy's habit - she used her hands alot.
By 1966, she wasn't so sure what would come out. Check out her version of the same number on the 1964 Jack Paar appearance. And yes she used her hands a lot but not to place a hand over her mouth if necessary. I've seen nearly every video available on Judy and never saw her make that particular gesture.
She's not covering her mouth. Anyway - what would covering her mouth have done? If something bad was going to come out covering her mouth and stopping singing would have made it look worse.
Its at 3.23 and she brings her hand to her mouth at the very end. Its looks strange to me it is and may have been a reflexive movement based her very real fear by then that her voice could crack at any moment.
I know when you are talking about. I just don't think that she's purposely covering her mouth. Well anyway - it doesnt matter. I know where you are coming from. She was amazingly fabulous but she went through a lot and her voice cracking could have been a very real fear of hers.
i dont think she's covering her mouth; i think it's just part of another one of her famous dramatic gestures...plus if you pay close attention, you can see that her hand is not close enough to her mouth to actually cover it, the camera angle is deceiving
none of her famous dramatic gestures are about putting a hand near her mouth. They are about extending her arms out from her body. There are late performances where she puts her hand to her mouth in the gesture of a kiss. Maybe its an aborted attempt at that.
Interesting comments on her gestures, here... For me? I find this gesture more a throwback to her Hollywood days, and being aware of "the line of my jaw"... Garland - as pretty as she was - had an odd jawline, and women frequently used their hands to camoflage a sagging jawline. When Garland sang full out, her neckline was often "full" - why not use a hand to cover that? Her voice was secure. Her belief in her own beauty was not.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
with comments like yours about judy's "sagging jawline", who wouldn't be insecure about their looks. Obviously YOUR comment didn't effect her, but people throughout her career referred to her looks and how she was not like the glamour girls, or was too fat, or too thin, or gestured too much. Well, singers like bassey imitated (copied) judy's singing style and it didn't do their careers any harm..
My, my... You must've assumed I dislike Judy, or didn't find her attractive. If so, let me correct this. Garland was the greatest. Garland was a beautiful woman. On the other hand, we ARE talking "Hollywood" - 'cause that's where she "grew up" (on screen, anyway), and the Hollywood "standards" are tough - cruel. Everyone of us has a physical fault (or 2). Hollywood teaches many tricks of the trade to help camoflauge them. That's all I'm saying.
you say in your reply that "every one of us has a physical fault (or 2)" - by whose standards are you referring to, because i don't believe that anyone has "faults" based on what they look like. Thank God we're all different, have characteristics that might be unique. Thank God we don't live in a Barbie world - then again, she was out of proportion if her doll was scaled up to life-size!
I like the way you think! (Now, if only I could get my mirror to think like that...) Seriously - there are people who are considered to have "perfect" faces, who do nothing for me. Garland, though? Her face (like her talent) was/is for me, magnetic. There's always something so interesting - and beautiful - in that face of hers. It's a face I can stare at, and never grow tired of looking at it, either. THAT, to me, is the "perfect" face. (Are you listening, mirror on the wall?)
You know I agree with you...Judy was never considered a Hollywood beauty, but there are photos of her and movies of her where she is simply gorgeous! But it is an interesting face. I agree
Thank you again, mandeley . . . I remember this vividly and appreciate it even more now . . . was way too young then to appreciate this . . . generous of you! ciao.
The great Garland giving a masterful performance of What Now My Love? that is peerless...too bad she didn't go into a recording studio during this time as she was in great form and the lp would have been a masterpiece! We miss you Judy and these great moments are priceless...
there is such nonsense spoken about judy being drunk when performing. My God, how could anyone, who is seriously 'drunk' remember the arrangment let alone the words to a song they were singing. I think this is one myth about judy that needs to be flung in the garbage.
I agree with you. hirchik. Especially when all that's been written about Judy point out that this was a period in her life when she was trying hard to get herself healthy - and she looks fantastic here... Healthy, happy, beautiful - and with her voice sounding better than it had in a few years. No - I don't think she was drunk at all.
good taste - that is what this woman had. why is it so rarely mentioned? she very rarely miscalculated her song choices or arrangements and this is one of the things that seperates her from other singers, past or present
I really do not think this is very good, she seems a bit off with the timing, i have seen her do it better than this performance of the song. But hey its Judy so who cares!?!
I really think that Judy must have really identified with the lyrics of this song. It certainly can be heard and felt in each performance she did of this song(wheather in good voice or not) This is the best vocal I have hear her do of"what now my love"
"What Now My Love" was one of the most moving, emotional songs of the 1960 and no one sang it more dramatically than Judy Garland. This performance on Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall was the best of all.
This is one of the many great Judy Garland performances, and certainly one of the very best post 1964. I love how she methodically works a song up to an emotional crescendo. The finale of this performance is spine tingling.
Magnificent Garland Classic performance shows that Judy still had it in 1966 and the music industry blew it not getting her in to a recording studio right after this great performance...this extraordinary and legendary singer was without a recording contract at this time and this was a crime...Judy is the greatest voice of the century and the greatest performer and that tour-de-force performance in A Star Is Born has never been matched and probably never will be.
Astounding!

It depends on the person that hear the singer: If you are more moved by voice then yes Shirley bassey sing it with more voice, if you want more interpretation then Julie gives more interpratation, yes and is close to the original French song: Et maintenant, Gilbert Becaud.

Love seeing these old videoclips of Judy performing on tv shows.

Tough choice...

not sure what this correspondent means by "horrific vocal condition" when they refer to judy's singing on the jack parr show. Judy's voice was like an instrument; however, she did not have the luxury of resting or fixing that, like say a violin or clarinet that needs occassionally to be mended. She was human, with a human being's larynx, which sometimes didn't make the mark - what a crime!
hirchik 3 years ago
It's all so different - in hindsight. Put yourself back in time - 1964. We hadn't seen Garland on TV since her great TV series. Then we see her on Jack Paar Show. Since we'd seen her last (we know now - but didn't know at the time) she'd had her stomach pumped, causing vocal damage, and had been told by doctors not to perform for at least a year... But only weeks later, comes the Jack Paar Show. Her voice is noticeable different - and, at the time, was shocking (no other word for it).
exnyker 3 years ago 2
thanks for your courteous response to my post.

BASSEY AND GARDLAND 2 GREAT SINGERS !!
mariaesther28 4 years ago 3
i personally don't think bassey is in the same league as garland. For me, hearing/watching bassey perform i am unmoved emotionally, acutely aware of her barking out songs and waving her arms around; i think she is a fake.
hirchik 3 years ago
I have to agree, they are perhaps the best. Being that they recorded many of the same songs such as this one (Bassey first) and that they were friends (Shirley more the student and Judy the mentor) makes watching both performers even more special. Two great artists!!

Ah Judy...whe was so emotional, so giving and hid nothing. No pretense whatsoever. Always loved her signature bow with her leg crossed back. What a legendary performer and loving woman.
Thank you so much for putting this up. Nice to see Perry Como too. ;)

The last time I saw Janet Jackson at the Superbowl she had her breast hanging out to compensate for her lack of any real talent.......Ill take a hand over a mouth anyday !!!
squarebird58 4 years ago 2
As she draws out that last note, she has her hand very close to her mouth. I think post 1964 she was never too sure what would come out and had tricks to handle her sadly unreliable instrument.
luftloft 4 years ago
I don't think it had anything to do with her being unsure of what would come out. She hit it perfectly, as she knew she would. That was just judy's habit - she used her hands alot.
esincl0777 4 years ago 5
By 1966, she wasn't so sure what would come out. Check out her version of the same number on the 1964 Jack Paar appearance. And yes she used her hands a lot but not to place a hand over her mouth if necessary. I've seen nearly every video available on Judy and never saw her make that particular gesture.
luftloft 4 years ago
She's not covering her mouth. Anyway - what would covering her mouth have done? If something bad was going to come out covering her mouth and stopping singing would have made it look worse.
esincl0777 4 years ago 2
Its at 3.23 and she brings her hand to her mouth at the very end. Its looks strange to me it is and may have been a reflexive movement based her very real fear by then that her voice could crack at any moment.
luftloft 4 years ago
I know when you are talking about. I just don't think that she's purposely covering her mouth. Well anyway - it doesnt matter. I know where you are coming from. She was amazingly fabulous but she went through a lot and her voice cracking could have been a very real fear of hers.
esincl0777 4 years ago
i dont think she's covering her mouth; i think it's just part of another one of her famous dramatic gestures...plus if you pay close attention, you can see that her hand is not close enough to her mouth to actually cover it, the camera angle is deceiving
paisajf09 4 years ago
none of her famous dramatic gestures are about putting a hand near her mouth. They are about extending her arms out from her body. There are late performances where she puts her hand to her mouth in the gesture of a kiss. Maybe its an aborted attempt at that.
luftloft 4 years ago
now that you mention it, it does look like she was trying to do the kiss thing

Interesting comments on her gestures, here... For me? I find this gesture more a throwback to her Hollywood days, and being aware of "the line of my jaw"... Garland - as pretty as she was - had an odd jawline, and women frequently used their hands to camoflage a sagging jawline. When Garland sang full out, her neckline was often "full" - why not use a hand to cover that? Her voice was secure. Her belief in her own beauty was not.

with comments like yours about judy's "sagging jawline", who wouldn't be insecure about their looks. Obviously YOUR comment didn't effect her, but people throughout her career referred to her looks and how she was not like the glamour girls, or was too fat, or too thin, or gestured too much. Well, singers like bassey imitated (copied) judy's singing style and it didn't do their careers any harm..
hirchik 3 years ago
That's all I'm saying.
exnyker 3 years ago 2
you say in your reply that "every one of us has a physical fault (or 2)" - by whose standards are you referring to, because i don't believe that anyone has "faults" based on what they look like. Thank God we're all different, have characteristics that might be unique. Thank God we don't live in a Barbie world - then again, she was out of proportion if her doll was scaled up to life-size!
hirchik 3 years ago
I like the way you think! (Now, if only I could get my mirror to think like that...) Seriously - there are people who are considered to have "perfect" faces, who do nothing for me. Garland, though? Her face (like her talent) was/is for me, magnetic. There's always something so interesting - and beautiful - in that face of hers. It's a face I can stare at, and never grow tired of looking at it, either. THAT, to me, is the "perfect" face. (Are you listening, mirror on the wall?)
exnyker 3 years ago 4
You know I agree with you...Judy was never considered a Hollywood beauty, but there are photos of her and movies of her where she is simply gorgeous! But it is an interesting face. I agree

The great Garland giving a masterful performance of What Now My Love? that is peerless...too bad she didn't go into a recording studio during this time as she was in great form and the lp would have been a masterpiece! We miss you Judy and these great moments are priceless...

She sounds absolutely incredible but to be honest I think she's drunk
grai 4 years ago
Maybe, but if she can be drunk and still perform like that, she's more amazing than I'd thought.
Jayee123 4 years ago
there is such nonsense spoken about judy being drunk when performing. My God, how could anyone, who is seriously 'drunk' remember the arrangment let alone the words to a song they were singing. I think this is one myth about judy that needs to be flung in the garbage.
hirchik 3 years ago 4
I agree with you. hirchik. Especially when all that's been written about Judy point out that this was a period in her life when she was trying hard to get herself healthy - and she looks fantastic here... Healthy, happy, beautiful - and with her voice sounding better than it had in a few years. No - I don't think she was drunk at all.
exnyker 3 years ago 5
beside Judy there is one only performer who cane sing this song Shirley Bassey. This is so great and strong.
Maasdam1993 4 years ago
absolutely at the top of her form.
good taste - that is what this woman had. why is it so rarely mentioned? she very rarely miscalculated her song choices or arrangements and this is one of the things that seperates her from other singers, past or present
sglynch 4 years ago 2
I really do not think this is very good, she seems a bit off with the timing, i have seen her do it better than this performance of the song. But hey its Judy so who cares!?!
eoin84 4 years ago
I really think that Judy must have really identified with the lyrics of this song. It certainly can be heard and felt in each performance she did of this song(wheather in good voice or not) This is the best vocal I have hear her do of"what now my love"

"What Now My Love" was one of the most moving, emotional songs of the 1960 and no one sang it more dramatically than Judy Garland. This performance on Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall was the best of all.
Dunedude8 4 years ago 3
This is one of the many great Judy Garland performances, and certainly one of the very best post 1964. I love how she methodically works a song up to an emotional crescendo. The finale of this performance is spine tingling.
jjwltube 4 years ago 2
Magnificent Garland Classic performance shows that Judy still had it in 1966 and the music industry blew it not getting her in to a recording studio right after this great performance...this extraordinary and legendary singer was without a recording contract at this time and this was a crime...Judy is the greatest voice of the century and the greatest performer and that tour-de-force performance in A Star Is Born has never been matched and probably never will be.
