  • It's like the song was written with the improv! Holy Smokes this is soooo good! You are a MASTER of STRIDE!

  • Just fantastic! Can't get enough of this rendition.

  • that's a great sounding piano - lovely bass notes, really rich

  • get dizzy when i watch left hand

  • Beautiful!

  • You play beautifully. I wish I could play like you, but well, at least I can listen to your music.

  • i need the sheet :)

  • @AlteWurstHaut mein Kanal hat einen Link zu meiner Website, wo Sie die Noten für freie bekommen können.

  • Awesome. So fluid. What amazes me is how effortlessly you drop down to that low C and back to the middle chord like it's nothing!

  • Brilliant!

  • most awesome!

  • Brilliant as usual. I listen to this every time I come to youtube. It perks me up!

  • by seeing just the little piece of your hair. i have predicted how ud look like. glasses, a long pointy nose but not to pointy. blue eyes, a kind of light coloured skin and a skinny medium build.

  • Best version of "Puttin On The Ritz" I've heard. Thanks for sharing.

  • I just discovered your version of "Puttin On The Ritz". I've added the link to a folder I call "piano music I could listen to all day". Excellent job. Thank you.

  • delightful

  • that good sir, has class

  • amazing

  • Chris is the best. Time, feel, voicings.... The fact that this got 11 "thumbs down" just goes to show what a cultural void we live in.

Perhaps he should say "yo" more, wear gang clothing and proclaim his conquering of the opposite sex...now THAT'S music!

  • @amvperson1379 or you could say the fact that he got 365 "thumbs up" shows what an appreciative culture we live in :)

  • ...and some people say theres actually no profit in daily practise... (you know, those guys who buy themselves music-software, turntable and lots of crappy soundproducts)

  • @11Kralle grrr growl grrr

  • @jd7x7jd

    Woff grrrl?

  • 'ol Chris is but a handful of the fine stride players in L.A.

  • damn you and your damn 10ths!

  • Woah how the hell does he move his left hand so rapidly!!!! Wow!!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Reminds me of when Hugh Laurie (now Dr. House) played this in his apartment as Bertie Wooster, in the Jeeves & Wooster series on BBC.

  • @silvermediastudio I guess it's worth mentioning.. Bertie was trying to learn the song because it was all the rage at his club, but was having issues claiming Berlin had too many words and not enough notes. Jeeves, as only Jeeves could, points out the nuance of a syncopated 5/4 time signature in American early jazz, and Bertie begrudgingly gives it a pass. In real life, they were both quite accomplished on the piano.

  • @jazzgreek

    i think hes joking

  • my left hand already developed quite well,, although there still is a lot to do. but maybe u can give me some hint in developing the right hand? to really get it smooth and play with good accuracy, touch and speed.. could u recommend any particularly senseful work outs? that would be very kind..

anyway keep up the good work!

  • firstly i must state that i really like your style! i am learning (or trying to learn) stride piano for some time, and of course its mean stuff. when trying to analyze ur style i would say ur left hand mainly provides that classic stride bass- single notes, walked tenths, and so on, while your right has more of a swing style approach, lets say teddy wilson, or a lighter earl hines (very octaved based, right)? i like that a lot, i wanna go kind of in that direction...

  • Freakin' amazing!

  • Faaanntaaasstic!!!

  • I play saxophine, but I'm learning Puttin on the ritz my ear. I love your version. Very smooth.

  • I can play Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff....all the legends

i cannot play stride to save my life.

  • Reminds me of Jess Stacey style. Great job!

  • Awesome..

  • oh man! after the best classical and barbershop, I would rather listen to this than any music in the world. it's awesome! :-)

  • Oh and Jazzgreeks' version is great. Especially the improv.

  • If you are asking for sheet music check out my arrangement for this song in my channel. This is not exactly this version, but a version partly arranged by me and partly adapted from bascholars.. Please thumbs up or uploader reply to this comment so everyone will see the sheet :P

  • How about a transcription- has that been done for this performance? If so, where can we get it??? Amazing- thanks for sharing.

  • I don't understand why there is 9 people who doesn't like this video. This guy is amasing. I wish I could have this left hand!

  • Fantastic!! Very musical. It grooves super! every note is lika a smole pearl. Get's even better with closed eyes. Chris Dawson is really a dicovery for me. will go now to his website BRavo!!!

  • your hands are huge.

  • Yeah!...

  • I want this for the background music of my website, does anyone know how I can save it?

  • Chris is hard to beat!! Fantastic musician...I love this!

  • WOW, I wish I had that left hand. Very well done

  • nice song nice technique nice solo...simply nice..I am going to get this song and want to learn it. thanks for the vid.

  • @Anonymous71688-Bet you couldn't play it half as well!

  • What key is this in

  • @thetaxman1991 Looks like F-minor

  • @thetaxman1991 Looks like F-minor

  • What a beast!

  • It's kinda funny how everyone's asking for sheet music.. That basically contradicts the whole purpose of stride and improvisation.......

  • @OnceMoreWithNoir well no because not everyone is as gifted as this guy. mozart, chopin, scott joplin - they all improvised, but they also wrote it down so other people could enjoy playing it too. :-)

  • we'd played this in my orchestra class....wow you make us look bad

  • I've posted a transcription for this on my website: see my channel for details.

  • @piano511 Thanks for the sheets, I can't play it as well as this but at least I can try :-)

  • @piano511 thanks a million for the transcriptions on your site! they're a bit out of my league but I'm hoping to learn some of them some time

  • @piano511

well, i dowloaded it, hope I can play at least some notes jaajaja, it's great you are sharing this with us. Thanks a lot.

  • Great you are sharing this sheet music with us, thanks a lot.

  • @englishpiano You're welcome! Difficult stride, but you can cheat and it still sounds good!

  • This is how my mom used to play- and I never had the patience to learn it. This is terrific!

  • Great work. This is one of my goals for next year this time. Not particularly this song, but just stride in general. Thanks!

  • Love that stride-playing!;;Swingin!

  • What a joyous playing style, love it, love it!!! fantastic

  • i love the stride!

  • Awesome!

  • This pianist has something very special musical qualities, it is always a joy to listen to his performances.

  • i wish someone would post this notation

  • A BIG "ahhhh-haaa!" to YOU!

That's some great work, reminds me of the stuff Millard Kelso played with Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys......

    BRILLIANT!

  • GREAT rhythm/tempo!! Excellent stride. Nice ad lib lines too.

Chris Dawson why haven't we heard of you??

I REALLY enjoyed this. You inspired ME to go practice some more stride!

  • Somebody post sheet music or a tutorial for this please?

  • There can't be sheet music if it's being improvised, this sort of music is just so much better when being played like this, you get the freedom of doing what you want to do, not being told what to do by a piece of paper!

  • Dont need the music better to just watch an' listen. The easiest part is the key it's in the difficult bit is keepin' that lefty movin' an' of course groovin'

  • this is really awesome, do u have sheet music for this here???

  • I am very impressed, great!!!

  • Okay, this song was just so inspiring that I had to sit down and learn the chords, and it was awesomely simple, but I can only hope that someday I can be as entertaining in my solo as you were.

  • Beautiful Stride!!! Thanks for posting this!

  • WOW! I love this.

  • This is much better than the original in my opinion. Would you be willing to write it for us all?

  • brilliant! just love the style, what a pity we have to come to YT in order to hear such music!

  • best version on youtube by far

  • Nahhh. that note was super ghost-ed. This dude is a sham, man. . . (FYI I am kidding, this is excellent.)

  • por que no te vas a lavar el orto gil!!!

  • envious I am :)

  • Wonderful. Sublime touch and very accurate stride left hand. Thanks for posting this jazzgreek.

  • man this is nice!

  • J'adore ton jeu mec

  • I love i love i love ohhhh yes !!!

  • just great

  • wonderful to my soul. this is what jazz should be about. beautiful!

  • wonderful and inspiring, thanks

  • Loverly to hear. Raises the spirits .

If I could find my wooden leg I would get up and dance.

The LH provides the impulse the RH provides the swing.

    Excellent.

  • This is one of those pieces where I keep coming back to watch. Great work! :D I love the flawless stride LH, the crisp lines, and the overall sound/feel.

(By the way, is there a good place to learn stride piano? I play jazz, but I've always wanted to learn stride as well)

  • learn a few scott joplin pieces and you'll get the hang of it.

  • i am hooked to this video it cant stop playing it

  • wow! sounds amazing!

great impro in the right hand and unbelievable control over the left one!

  • Apart from your playing, I like the sound of the recording as well. Smooth.

  • Awesome! Awesome! Favorited video!

  • wooow, bravo

  • this blows my mind. you are absoluty amazing. i hope 2 play like that someday.

  • Why do you all ask for the sheets. It says right in the description that this is improvised, go look the word up if you don't know what that means.

This guy is just amazing, practice practice practice and maybe you can improvise like this some day.

  • Piano playing blows my mind.

  • sheetmusic????

  • Do you mean a transcription of this version, or are you asking for the music to Struttin' at the Ritz. This is improvised, so there is no music to this version.

  • Hey, nice.

  • Sheets??

  • waaah your stride is damn accurate.. amazing

  • shit is swing'n man

  • VERRRRRYYYYYYY NICEEEEEEEEEE

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a joy to listen to!.......moving at quite a fair old pace!... and so accurate and crisp...thanks so much for posting!...

  • That left hand is amazing...

  • Absolutely amazing. I have just done Grade 3 and I'm already starting Grade 4. I wish I could do Stride Piano even just that piece. That is my favourite stride piece ever :)

    YourGrannysGranny

  • I'd give an especially prized portiuon of my anatomy to play like that.

  • Beautiful rendition. You did a great job on it. Turbo sound, very quick. Hard to sing to it, but.....Wonderful. André :-)

  • i dont even play the piano, im a professional listener, but I watch the left hand, thats what stride is all about!!!

  • It's funny ... beginners watch the right hand, players respect this left hand. Great job all around

  • wow! this is amazing playing

  • :0 im speechless... words can not describe how amazing you are.

  • Excellent stridin'!

  • Reminds me of the clean attack of Franke Carle. Marvelous work.

  • Respect Man!

  • NICE LEFT HAND

  • Still a great playing, bravo! ;)

  • bravo!

  • NICE touch. I must practice a lotz....

  • nice playing, I want to play this tune now

  • niiiice:-)

  • This is amazing! I cannot even dream of playing the piano that good. I love the tune! 5/5

  • It just struck me! The sound and feeling of this true masterpiece from Chris matches completely the great music from Django Reinhard - transferred to solo piano! Never heard this done so brillant before. So maybe we can hope for "Minor Swing" from Chris? :-)

  • Fantastic! Really amazing! I heard it several times now, and will come back again. Is this on a CD also from Chris? And is Chris' version of this song inspired by another version or simply his own?

  • This is Chris version, which he improvised on the spot. It isn't on a CD.

  • What a pity. Would love to have the sound track - to listen to and study! It is great. Thanks for a quick reply!

    Tom

  • (just speechless) !!!

  • An absolute bravo!

  • Fantastic and so musical, too. Great stuff!

  • exelente bravo!!

  • Awesome~!!

  • Please, more stride from Chris Dawson!

  • I could watch this all day long! Where did you get this version its absolutely delicious!

  • This is improvised by Chris. There is no music. I put it on the internet for him.

  • very good!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey where can u get the music for this at?

  • SWINGIN!

  • Wonderfull

  • His fingers glide so easily over the keys... awesome work!

  • Does anyone know where I can get the piano solo sheets from? Please? I'm so desperate to play this wonderful piece!

  • I sent you a message, read it.

  • Yes, I agree with OrganCat. The rhythm is relentless and sort of spring-loaded. A lesson in how not to overuse the pedals: the bass line is just right and doesn't drown out the melody.

  • Great work! Clean as a whistle and great attention to dynamics and balance! You're a master. Search YouTube 'Ike Reeves' and check out my work on piano.

  • Tout simplement

    Génial...

  • Muy bueno

  • Fucking awesome. I cant say how great this playing his. Your the king!

  • wow. that was impressive

  • stride is very difficult to master... and you cannot reach this level without talent, of course there is a lot of work ;). GOOD JOB

  • All it takes is practice.

  • wicked, you're talented and your timing is BAAAAAd as in good)

  • awesome. how can i get my left hand to do that.. took me two weeks to just get the Maple Leaf Rag down, can't imagine trying to improvise those jumps

  • Have any sheet music?

  • Goddamn! *Drools*

  • Hot!! You're perfect!

  • great playin!

  • Bravo!

  • That was pretty good :)

I don't really think his left hand is exceptionally fast. My dad is a stride piano player, so maybe I'm just spoiled :)

  • lucky asshole

  • Check out the two vids of him playing on my profile. "There will be some changes made" He strides pretty fast around 2:30 if I remember right.

  • How long do you have to practice for that?

  • Great.

  • I love it!

  • If you liked Chris' excellent rendition, you'll also love Frederick Hodges' version also on YouTube

  • Looking at Chris dawson's left is amazing in itself. I cant imagine how fast Art Tatum's left hand mustuve flown.

  • Excellent.

  • Man! I think you should publish an instructional stride CD. I am itchin to play more stride. - Bob
