You get less quality, BIG BOXY & BORING cars...except for the luxury models. The average cars of the type built in north america, at least, are so boring you want to take the bus. You're left wondering why they are so over-priced compared to a Honda that is higher quality & safer and sexier.

If the automakers want a bail out, they should get it from the oil companies.

When GM killed the electronic car from its line up, they "replaced" it eventually with 3 different versions of the Hummer--supposedly under the influence (financial) of the oil companies and the Bush administration.

Can you imagine how many electronic cars GM would have sold these past 18 months if they kept their line of electric cars, rolled out other fuel efficient vehicles, too and didn't roll out the countless vehicles that got 15mpg or less that they've been making/adding to their line up in the past 3 years?

Whoa, dude! In Mexico, where I travel for business, NOBODY owes anybody a job...it's completely sink or swim. No rights, sexism, ageism, and every -ism you can think of. I'm not a fan of the free market, but if it's the free market that's supposed to bring mankind forward, then the auto industry, as part of the market, has failed terribly; the combustion engine couldn't be more primitive. We have cell phones now that you can write a novel on while you're watching on it, as a comparison.

Let them go belly up, and re-open under new management with fresh ideas.

I think that the only reason companies don't compete is because they own a monopoly. Everytime they're about to crash, government helps them. Why should they change if everytime they are behind the times, they can make a claim to preserving the economy. After all, this bailout isn't because the market failed. It isn't to promote innovation, it's to maintain a certain lifestyle.
