  • salve quis es carma sum infans sum

  • In the Latin language we don't pronounce U like an A as in the English language. I don't know where you've got this info or how you've came to learn that, but it's wrong. Latin language must be read the way you read it so the word Sum it's pronounced SOOM not SUM.

  • Cogito Ergo Sum :)

  • Sede!! Dormit ad villam rusticam !!!

  • why this... scandalous music?

  • They sound exactly like they're written. Go learn Romanian!

  • @tackleashley in ecclisiastical latin, A-morr est vit-e es-sent-zia

  • many of these things are pronounced wrongly(?). in latin 'er' does not make the same sound as the english 'er'. You pronounce latin'er' just as you pronounce 'e' in latin but with a rolled 'r' after

  • Ok, how the fk you say hello????

  • @aragrox Salve. Which the v is pronounced as a w. So it's like 'Sal-wey'

  • @Tigergal16 oh..........thankyou :(

  • @Tigergal16 in ecclesiastical latin, the v is pronounced as an english v, it's still more difficult because some letters make more then one sound

  • @aragrox To say hello you say "Salve"...its pronounced "Sal-way"

  • @aragrox ....Im italian....SALVE..----in talian this word sound in english SAL-the.....VE.sound how the article THE in english.......and in latin too.......

  • Us this Latin Spanish or REAL Latin? Didn't finish da vid cause I fought it was Spanish cause of da mosic!!!

  • @icecreamlover459 it's Latin, not spanish

  • does anyone else find it funny that a starter vid dosent have "hello" or " how are you "?

  • Dora?

  • Tu pulchra, Te amo tanto! = You are so beautiful, I love you so much!

    I think that's right

  • Dum spiro spero!!!

  • If this video has a lot of mistakes, why don't you just delete it and make anew one ? Or just delete it ?

  • @2502a25 In case you are blind I have made new 'BETA' version of this video, there is a big notice at the start of this video telling you to go to it, plus the better version is a video response. So it's kinda your fault for not taking any notice of that. The 'BETA' version is so much more helpful than this video, but it still tells you all of the things you need to learn from this video. So I suggest checking it out.

  • what is this song called

  • @lalocita100 I honestly have no idea, I just choose it randomly. Sorry :)

  • @tigergal16. What a hater.

  • Im american so thanks for the insult buddy

  • ammmmmmm which program did you get to learn latin

  • I had the hardest time learning engilsh and if i learn latin i may forget english

  • @NikoliaTarasov what country?

  • Latin language should not be taught by Americans ,because they are the worst people at pronouncing foreign words.

  • @tirpitz19 dude....I'm not American (I wish I was) but I'm not. I'm British.... and yeah, I know my voice sounds terrible but the pronouciation is what I've been taught, but there is a 'BETA' version of this video (I put a massive annotation at the start of this video to notify anyone who watches this.) And in the 'BETA' version my voice is a little clearer but don't judge it because I was young when I made these :) Anyway, I'd suggest you go check out the better one, it's straight to the point

  • @Tigergal16 Sorry dude.

One other thing.Be happy that you are European.

  • @Tigergal16 u dont wish u wre american Trust me.

  • @JStellar17 Lol, I guess I don't exactly WISH I was american, but being from England kinda gets me down a bit sometimes because it can be a little boring, plus it's always raining. :)

  • @tirpitz19 only the ones with English as a first language...

  • im in latin, and some of the words you say are wrong

  • this guy/girl has THE creepiest little voice I've ever heard in my life, p.s. LEARN HOW TO PRONOUNCE SHIT IN LATIN!!! YOUR LATIN IS HORRIBLE!!!!

  • I'm in the first class of the high school and I learn Latin!!!!!!!! I like it very much!!! This is a bit Latin I already know: "Scroti non estis. Ego etiam non scrotum sum." I think this is good Latin, its very easy if you know how it works :)

  • umm... i barely know anything about latin, but your vowel pronunciations are wrong.

  • sum,esse,fui

  • American ppl cant speak other languages than english, i have never never never heard and american whit good pronunciation.

And yes, you fail whit the pronunciation too. Learn to say R not "aar" as you americans do

  • @Boneballoon if you're soooo smart, you would know that the person speaking is NOT American, but British... thumbs up if you agree with me. Americans rock!

  • @sbati22 my god, that's what happens when you do a thing called move the microphone, that's not my breathing, get it right. Oh, and it feels like you were swearing in my ear the time it took me to read your comment (which was a waste of my time)

  • @sbati22 WTF?

  • anyway...thx so much for putn a ``how to speak Latin `` on YouTube.com

  • Please help me.. I've been trying to look for a translator & I've had no luck.. I was wondering if you can translate "All Things Shall Perish"..? & Also, "Desire Never Sleeps"?

  • its kinda dead not a lot of preopl use it my ucle speak 6 languages and he have learn that language but hes tell me that its not gonna be rebuild

  • How stupid are you people you guys don't speak español, Italiano, portuges y Frances only this languages are the only one closer to Latin and like I said Latin language is not dead they speak it in Battican city, italia, Italy.

  • Excuseme butt there is one place that speak latin and is the Battican city Italia for every bodys info jajaj.

  • she pronounces it as it would be English not LATIN

The "R´s" are very bad for example... Although it´s a dead language all teachers have to know how to pronounce Latin as well

  • @carameloxx

also so he and other persons can laugh at you, when you complain.. and you can't even spell "Delete".. xD

  • to speak latin corecly you need to lurn a latin languge like spanis or beateer french

it have more cramer crap dans spanish and look like itayan

  • Im in my last year of latin now ( so i have been studiing latin for 6 years now) so you can i say i know allot about it. But all you guys who keep arguing about how to pronounce it, it makes me sick. It is a dead language, no one speaks it. No one knows for sure how to speak latin, they can only make assumptions. so stop nagging about how he pronounces it.

  • SUM IS PRONOUNCED SOOM,SUMUS IS SOO-MOOSS ..ESTISIS ESTEES..AND THE MONTH OF TH YEAR WERE PRONOUNCED BAD TOO

  • @carameloxx Well, in case you hadn't noticed, at the very beginning of the video, it says I have made a better version of this video, and on that one I pronounce the words better and stuff. It's not that hard to miss really. It's a big red notice with a link to the better video on it. So you would of seen it, unless of course you're blind.

  • @Tigergal16 I THOUGH THAT WAS A ADD ON

  • @Tigergal16 IF YOU MADE A BETTER VERION THEN WHY KEEP THIS VIDEO AND NOT DELEAT IT

  • @carameloxx Because this video has so many views on it, if I deleted it I would loose all of those views

  • @Tigergal16 ?? make no sense...xD but then again, thanks for the vid...:)

  • Do you really sound like this?

  • Dear Author of this tutorial, Some time ago, I wrote that sum means "i exist" and somebody out there replied to my comment. He or she claims that "I am" is the true meaning of sum, then goes on to give me the principal parts of esse as if I don't know anything, I need an amicus, someone to tell me I'm correct, a true Latin scholar to back me up.Potes advocare mihi? scholar2013

  • @scholar2013

Well, "I am" and therefore "I exist"

The words might have, a long time ago, had the same meaning and by time the word and it's meanings were divided into different words with more specific meanings. Seems for me that "could" work :) /Another dude who would want a scholar to answer :)

  • @scholar2013 you are right, sum actually means " i exist" but the other translation is " i am". Some latin words have multipul meanings in english. (sorry for my bad english)...

  • Smart Kid

  • Thank you for these videos. They're very clear. You make it easy for us to learn what you want to teach. I have to ask though, could you kindly not add any music to the beginning or end, it is rather grating, and adds no value to your already-excellent lessons.

  • hmm...ya, i think you need to work on your pronunciation, it's very American. but good job though...

  • @Bobababy2208

1 - You are certainly not in the computer, but the Youtube is. We all read your messages in Youtube, not in the USA. So here is the Youtube. The Internet. Wherever you live.

2- Why shouldn't I? it's a public discussion. If you do not want anyone to to join it, send private messages.

  • @Bobababy2208

Here is not the USA. Here is the Internet. The World Wide Web.

  • @Bobababy2208 Well, that's there.

  • @Bobababy2208 I'm from Indiana, and gay can mean feminine but I could see how it could be misinterperated.

  • @Bobababy2208 I didn't say that, I said the languages are feminine. I am not claiming to know you. And, when people say 'gay' they mean feminine like, listening to Hannah Montana would be 'gay'. I know French can be spoken by a 'mannly man' and German vice-versa, but my point is, German makes it alot easier to sound masculine, and Fench makes it easier to sound feminine.

  • @Bobababy2208 Well, whenever I meant gay, I think you know that I meant feminine, jeeze political correctness on here! And I knew you might know what the Romance Languages are, I just forgot and typed it. Saying that German is gay is a complete misconception, seeing as to how it's considered very masculine as opposed to French for example.

  • @Bobababy2208 2 of 5 huh? I never could get interested in romance languages, they just seemed too gay for me. I speak German though. BTW I include Romance Languages as Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Latin. My favorite are Brazillian Portuguese and Latin, the others I find uninteresting.

  • Am I the only one annoyed that the actual learning starts at 1:15?

    Thumbs up if you agree

  • @JustThatKindOfGirl95 I am very sorry about that, I am currently making a 'BETA' version of this first one and I will upload it soon, so it will start straight away, I am also going to improve my pronouciation because I have realised that it is wrong in some places.

  • @Tigergal16 It's fine, just a little annoyed the first time through is all :)

  • she is decent at latin... good job! :D

  • You need to have less cumbersome self explanation and more teaching.

  • YEA AWSOME !!!

  • optime! tu non est stultus sed elegit vituperat..

  • not sum but sum ( soum)

  • Mi anima es en mi nasa.

  • LATINO = is any person whose mother tongue is ANY OF THE FIVE ROMANCE LANGUAGES (SPANISH,PORTUGUESE,ITALIAN, FRENCH AND ROMANIAN).. IN OTHER WORDS, It is NOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT just SPANISH SPEAKERS...

  • dico=I declare

    dices=you declare

    dict=he/she/it declares

    dicemus=we declare

    dictis=y'all declare

    dicent=they declare

Correct me if I have misconjugated anything. All you Latin scholars out there know what I want to declare.

  • Your pronuciation is wrong, this song is irritating.

  • ahhhhhhhh i speak spanish and Latin for me is way too easy!

  • ugostes???? estudien alguna lengua romance y despues tratan de enseñar nuestros origenes camaradas.

  • she sounds just like hermoine granger from harry potter!!!

  • you have to pronuonce it less floating. it isnt like english where you swallow the words. try to roll more on the R and so on.

  • Hi Jordana I would like to know if the Latin you're teaching is Classical latin, Medieval latin or Eclesiastical latin??? Thanks:)

  • All the words done are the same in classicak, medieval and Eclesiastical, so it doesn't matter.

  • The introduction said "learnt". XD

  • The pronouncation is all wrong and the text introduction is redundant.

  • Latin should be taught by italians, not english-speakers...

  • well why only italians?? there are many languages "product" of latin, like spanish ;) ....but yes without offense, english speakers tend to speak very bad latin

  • Yeah, I know, spanish, french and other languages are also derived from latin, but italian is the most similar language to latin because of its history, latin was the first language of the roman empire.

  • Really, I speak english and I also speak a few other languanges that are derived from Latin. I am trying to learn Latin because of the history of the language. I have never had any problems with the pronunciation because all languages are is Repetition or Mimic if you will. It's the remembering what I've learned that's the problem :P The thing that's great about most languages is that you can see the similarity because of the latin. :) I hope I didn't offend anyone.

  • Wahahahahahahah You got stung ! ! ! ! lmfao

  • What are you talking about.

  • @DaraJean of course not, It maks me happy to know that you have such interest in the language ;) I support whatever you do if its for the good of learning and preserving the Latin language

  • Nice video, but you are making some typical pronunciation mistakes the English speaker do in Latin. It is actually wrong.

Your Latin sounds English, read the sound like they are writen, do not swallow them like you do in English. In Latin "U" is always an "u" and never an "a". "R" is nothing like English "R", make it more Spanish, Italian or Russian - it will be correct. Keep trying.

  • @neroclavd321 Actually,you're wrong!I've learned latin too,and Tigergal16 is correct,so if I were you,I would keep my mouth shut!

  • @Randee404

Anyone who has ever heard Latin or a Latin-based language knows that I am rgiht.

If the Latin you've learned sounds like in this video, then I feel pity for you.

  • @neroclavd321 the latin u is o

  • @SwedenGirl97

do you mean that that a word such us "FUTURUM" would sound like "FOTOROM"? Please make a demonstration video with you rading some Latin verses, I will show it to my friends. We'll have a lot of fun!

  • @neroclavd321 yes it will sound like that ^^ If you speak swedish, latin is kinda easy, because O sounds like Å and U sounds like O, I´ts like finnish :D

But I will make a Video to demonstrate ^^ sheck out my account to see the video later ^^

  • they still speak latin in the vatican. so there is proper pronunciation. all that no one really knows except Ancient Rome stuff is bs. people still use it.

tigergal16 its still a good vid though

  • Everyone is mocking the pronunciation as if they were a native speaker....Last I've checked NO ONE knows exactly how the words were pronounced by the Romans, so all we can do is use our teachers accents as a frame of reference- who's to say it's accurate?

  • sum-I exist

    esse-to exist

    fui-I have existed

    futurius-about to exist

For all those people who questioned me before, the closest thing I have to a textbook tells me that I'm 100% correct.

In short I need to speak to somebody would, if they were in Ancient Rome, have no troble communicating with the locals.

And while I'm at it, may I also tell you that dicere actually means "to declare" and not say or tell.

  • nooooooooo you've got a horrible pronounce!!!!!!

  • Is this Latin American, or is it Roman Latin?

  • it's roman latin

  • That music Latin American. It has NOTHING to do with the Roman Latin.

You accent is American English- and is WRONG!

  • R !!!! wrong R pronunciation......

  • vid starts at 0:55

  • No, no, no. I don't like this video. There are lot of mistakes (Sorry for my english). You can't say correctly months. And your accent is poor. :/

  • This is gonna be a piece of cake!!! Its almost like spanish!!!! I got this.

  • thanks for sharing , i m alittle bit suxk in languages

  • Good video. Thanks

  • This is great! thank you so much! i really need to know how you say: "come into my soul and i will come into yours and we will teach eachother". it could be a great help if you or anyone else could help me out :) thanks<3

  • Google a latin translater? :)

  • hm... i don't like that... it's not as easy as it is shown in that video... you need more than just 3 or 4 videos to learn latin; and it's really not necessary to know the months in latin when you are translating some texts out of the exercisebook ... i can write latin as well and know what i am talking about..

  • i think it means come to the world with strengh, i know it because i'm portuguese andits easy for me to translate

    peace

  • what does vir fortisimuss in mundo mean

  • good lessons..

  • Hi! What means this phrase: Et finis esset ditiis et origo virtutisus? :)

  • Comment removed

  • A maioria das palavras dita, é muito parecida com a lingua portuguesa, para eu como latino americano aprender latim vai ser mais fácil do que um inglês aprendendo, isso cabe o mesmo para a lingua espanhola.

  • =do you mean that u are getting ur scholar in 2013????

  • Sum does in fact mean I am. sum comes from the verb "Sum, esse, fui, futurus" meaning "to be" and is not being the same as existing?

  • You haven't even graduated yet, you're 14 and you call yourself a scholar?

You've got a lot to learn, kid.

  • Nope

    Means "I am"

    Check Wheelock's, bro.

  • September is a funny word!

  • I am= ego sum :D

  • Great video! You ROCK for teaching Latin! That is cool and awesome you know Latin! :)

  • Okay so im taking latin and its not "Sum" its more like "Sume" With a long O sound. and Sumus is "Sume-oose"

In latin the c has a k sound as in cat. The H has no sound like in "phone" (Though its ph i know) And the U has a long o sound. Im sorry but i have to comment this. Though the spelling, and meanings are correct!! Pronunciation needs to be correct. Because its the difference in saying, Hortus (you would say it like "Whortus" But its "Ortus" )

    Nice job though! :]

  • Um, what is up with the music for this vid?

This is a vid of the Latin LANGUAGE (European). It has no relation to Latin MUSIC (Latin-American) lol

Just wanted to clear that up

  • you don't say the words right.

    i'm 14 and i have 3 hours latin a week..

sum and sunt sound like soum and sount.

    just like the word soup!

you just say the latin words in english xD

  • It was ok. But to be honest I don't see why i woukd want to learn a language nobody speaks. I learned esperanto and now I actually ahve nobody to speakto.

  • I learned Latin, I don't even have anyone to talk to in English .____.

  • Comment removed

  • maby make songs of more improved latin stuff i do latin and know pretty mutch but dont have fantasy lol if u could make a vid from the futurum simplex or perfectum or something that would be nice :) ps nice vid

  • yeah...this is really bad, i am taking Latin and her pronunciation is horrible. even though we cant say for certain how words were pronounced...there are some conventions to follow when pronouncing it.

  • for all you people who say she is speaking it wrong. She isn't. There is no way to tell haw you pronounce Latin. Only that all v's are pronounced like w's and all c's are hard.

  • at least its not pronunced like most english words. u is not a in italien or any other romanic language

  • Actually I am taking Italian and also French. Both romantic languages.

  • she is pronoucing with a very strong english acent. latin should be pronounced somehow like italian-spanish

  • Yo! I'm ready for the next lesson...

  • LOL

  • She has to be reading it from a book. Her latin is terrible

  • I think it was even b4 rome was a kingdom before the republic.
