I think some parts of the series are totally stupid and not even in the book(what is known to be very fictional )-for example, that claudius is caesonia´s friend and saves senator´s wives from being sold as prostitues...yeah right...claudius was such a good soul...........and the screaming of the women is very annoying, i wonder if they took one to dubb all....but i got to admit i was surprised to find anything like this at all in the web..thank u
@Kelly14UK Maybe Tiberius when he's wasn't at his private resort in Capri. Although ancient sources say Claudius had what was considered "correct" relations which to Romans meant women, which they regarded a bit more highly then what was said about the other Julio-Claudian emperors.
THANK YOU! I am loving this! I saw only part in the 70's - I was pleased and astonished when Claudius was made Emperor - missed the fact it was called I, Claudius, I guess!
@edwardszzz You say it's ridiculous that the actors are speaking English. I expect it was filmed in English because 21st century actors don't generally speak ancient Latin and Greek. If they did learn the ancient languages the general audience would not watch it. The series would not make money - therefore it would not be made.
@ant697 It loses its' historical accuracy for myself. In my mind it is like watching an italian remake of "a man for all seasons"- using Italian actors , speaking Italian with their native mannerisms.
It's ok, at least for this Youtube upload. The first section "A touch of murder" has 10 parts. The first 5 are from "A touch of murder." The second 5 are from "family affairs". So, at least on youtube you aint missin anything. ;)
Antonia, mother of Claudius and Germanicus (brunette w/sewing) was daughter of Mark Antony. One of the good members of the imperial family. Germanicus, a kid here, married Julia's daughter Agrippina, also a kid here.
Tiberiius in exile on Capri, developing the murderous paranoid character he soon displayed as emperor. A life ruined by his mother's schemes and plots.
@bookkeeper57 he was in exile in rhodes at this point. capri is where he goes after he is emperor to shield himself from the assasins and plots in rome. he liked being in capri he hated being in rhodes.
It's not Julias fault. She might as well have some fun considering the guys she was married to and some of them she was pawned to. But anyway, this is a good show.
@vbabe11111 Take this series with a grain of salt....the real Livia only killed about half the people this series claimed that she killed...plus Tiberius loved his mother, it was not until 3 years before her death that both of them had a fallout with each other.
@vbabe11111 Because the series was based on a novel written by Robert Graves in 1934. He based his book on the historical accounts, but exaggerated some of the events for dramatic license.
The overall story is true, but some of the characters are over dramatized and some events exaggerated or made up
This series which came out when I was 12 was by far the best series that has ever been broadcast and I really don't think anything else has come even close. the srcipt is part shakespear part greek tragedy, the plot keeps you toally hooked the characters fantstically drawn The actors all shine, Brian Blessed has never been better as Augustus, John Hurt genius as Caligula, Derek Jacobi obviously the stunning title role Claudius, a god like series!!!
I'm confused about the sequence of I Claudius. Please help me understand how you are numbering each segment. that you post. What does 2/10, 1/10, 3/10, represent? I'm not sure how to follow each posting in order to watch this series in order. How I want to see this series again!!! Please tell me what the number with the slash, and following number mean.
the episode order is : a touch of murder, waiting in the wings, what shall we do about claudius, poisonous queen, some justice queen of heaven, reign of terror, zeus by jove, hail who, fools luck,a god in colchester and old king log the 1/10 is the breakdown of each indivial episode into 10 minute chunks i hope this helps you
@Dogbuff Exactly whose heart? Julia is a warm as it gets and that's saying a lot. Livia is cold, calculating and ultra-coniving and Antonia is upstuck, vain and acts as if she knows everything.
the British, just like American media, has good programs and bad ones. This program is excellent, like Roots, made about the same time. I lived in England for three years, the BBC ran some the most inane comedies I'd ever seen.
I never really liked roots. Seemed like a load of bullshit to me. If you are going to greatly exagerate historical injustices, than do it like Mel Gibson does, and have a character that goes nuts in revenge. Much better viewing.
load of bullshit huh....."greatly exaggerated" it was actually toned down so that white americans wouldn't have to feel shame for committing murder, rape, beatings, and using constant violence against blacks even if some deserved it
A black man today in USA is 50 times more likely to commit violent actions against a white man than vica versa because of nonsensical lying propaganda like roots.
I particularly disliked the ending where the white militiaman started begging not to be whipped.
Just not historically accurate.
Oh and I am not trying to hate on blacks but deliberately making the white man into something he is not is just as bad as the old cartoons of blacks.
Oh and just to clarify the point I am making, if a hypothetical alien observer was to use 95% of the resources depicting racial culture in the USA today, he would probably deduce that it was whites commiting the violent crime on blacks through right wing extremist organisations.
Thanks for making this available to all of us! Yes, you have added a touch of class to youtube and the internet!

@vbabe11111 Don't...either way this is one of the greatest things ever shown on TV, the acting talent is the best you'll ever see.
Plus you'll at least know the history of the first few Roman Emperors, with an 85% historical accuracy.
