  • @nosvaructu You may disagree, but people have disarmed muggers, and some have tried and lost their lives. I personally think it's better to put up a fight, i may lose my life or get injured but hey, thats how some things are.

  • @nosvaructu Let me rephrase since you obviously didn't understand what i said. Any time they use a gun to mug you, you'll see the gun. That is all you need, i never claimed you couldn't be shot. I claimed what YOU need to defend yourself is the ability to see the gun, or a general idea where it is. If they try to pick a fight with a gun, i think thats a big mistake. Well trained martial artist could toss someone off the center of balance, can't aim with no balance. Can still get shot

  • No , I want to kick you both in the balls and slap you guys silly...this is some grade A crap!

  • I want to punch you guys in the face!

  • I love Tonfa, easiest weapon in the world to use.

  • i use what we called gun.

  • @TheBlooMonster Tonfa are designed against hand weapons, and if you think a gun makes you safe, then you obviously don't know martial arts. As gun disarms are VERY effective when the right person uses it (Both back and front). So unless you plan on mugging a guy by shooting him from 10 feet away, a gun won't help. That is unless you're just a killer and have no need to get close and just shoot at random people. In which case you better have pinpoint aim, if you miss they're gone.

  • @narutardtedr I study martial arts and guns, but I have no illusion that they guy with the gun has the advantage, if you were close I would draw from my conceal carry and proceed to shoot from the hip by aiming just with my body using volume of fire versus accuracy. I have no reason to disarm someone unless they are psycho, rather just give up my wallet in most cases.

  • @nosvaructu Shooting from the hip gives a very limited and inaccurate shot. Though a person if they practiced could shoot as if it were infront of their face. But why would someone mug you with a gun in their pocket? It will be to your back if they want your money from behind, and low but still very visible and you could strike like that. No one goes "Give me your money" with their gun hidden from the person they're trying to use it on.

  • @narutardtedr and low but still very visible from the front*

  • works great in slow motion

  • Christian martial arts?

  • @shardprime What?

  • you are 2 clowns

  • The advertisement was better than the actual video.

  • 0:50 one handed weapon flipping. what I am always noob at...

  • when u perform an upper block, angle the tonfa more so the escrima stick will slide off your tonfa, leaving him vulnerable

  • give me this escrima stick and i hit you till the holy spirit comes over you !;D

  • in your world mr. christian, that would work

but in a real situation, you would look like a retard

  • @w1ntersw0lves This sort of thing tends to be more commonly used for sporting purposes than for self defense but in a real life situation, I agree; the practical use is limited. If you had a tonfa to defend yourself with against a blunt weapon that would be useful but against a blade? Unless you have the proper training, forget about it. Besides, many fights where weapons would be involved would involve guns and tonfa vs. bullet won't work out very well for the guy with the tonfa.

  • fucking stupid video

  • christian martial arts ??? wtf!!!?? oxymoron

  • using the handel as a weapon? there is a better version of that, its called a kama

  • @cynicalninja But what if blades aren't allowed or you don't want to kill? Not that easy, but I still don't really suggest following this guy's advice (no offense). Do what works for you, don't try and change what works for him.

  • thank you think was very helpful 2 me

  • tonfa are my favorite

  • jesus i know shit about martial arts but i could of guessed thats how u use tonfa

  • You can't just say to yourself "Well I have learned one block with the Tonfa and one block with the Eskrima stick's an also one block with the Nunchucks" "Now I am a expert and I post video instructions of it on Youtube! ... You have to LEARN how you fight with each of one of those weapons for couple of YEARS! You cant just pick up the eskrima stick know one move and say: "Well I can fight with that!" You have to train and skill yourself ...Damn it's not the Matrix...

  • eh the police wield tonfa and virtually never use it holding the handle. The use of any weapon depends entirely on the situation. A black belt in TKD may tell you to never use your arms to attack because your legs are stronger and longer, but why limit yourself in your training?

  • @RisefromyourGRAVE The tonfa was invented in Okinawa ... has fundamentals of Karate-Do

  • Notice at 0:21, he calls the escrima stick a tonfa.

  • @IsacCrimson nice catch LOL

  • attacking from behind is chicken style:P xd

  • when i first watch katekyo hitman reborn i saw this tonfas for the first time

  • Why is the religion of the martial artist mentioned? That information does not seem important to learning the function of a weapon. It is extraneous to tack that on to the title. As christianity is supposed to be a religion of peace does that not hurt your credibility as a source of weapon expertise?

  • are tonfa legal in the uk? please reply if you know!!

  • Yeah ofc they are, its just a bit of wood rofl

  • well for ex. nunchucks aren't

  • So why should one never use the handle? Isn't it actually good to be able to use every aspect of a weapon? Why limit oneself?

  • You should never use the handle of the tonfa!! Expertvillage is only an expert at giving misleading information or wrong facts......

  • I know, these are the only people I've seen that say that. When I was learning tonfa, the first thing I had drilled into me was that you should NEVER hold tonfa on the club part.

  • i think originally you shouldn't cos you can easily lose it, but in police forces and some western copies of martial arts people do use the handle

  • May be... guy is good but looks like pussy...

  • hahah fucking Christan martial arts, this is a joke. i would never want to learn from them.

  • This is cool. I like this one. Thanks for posting friend.

  • with the first technique when you block he could kick the back of your leg making you fall then he could hit you in the head or even knee you in the head

and why woulld he kick if you have a weapon and he doesnt because you have the upper hand

  • hum!tout le monde ne sort pas avec deux tonfa!de plus plutot que de bloquer en force genre jodan age uke il faut preferer devier le coup!mais cela reste une bonne technique!

  • dont take this to heart, but its not the martial art , its the person.

  • it not like that at all. think about it, some people have 3 fight and think there the best now each of those fight last about 2 mins or less. if you spend hours training then you will become a better fighter.

but i understand what your say. apart from judo most martial art that come from japan south Korea are a bit rubbish or a form of kick boxing.

if you want a REAL edge on people you meet on the street do wing chun or judo or both.

if you do both you'll be a great well rounded fighter.

  • That comment is absolutely correct but what i will say is this;

you cannot 'train' about fear in a fight. I've been in fights and i literally don't know if i'm gonna come out with a broken arm, leg, black eyes, even dead, nor do i know what i'd do to the other guy..... and that's fear & adrenaline.

No martial arts can teach you to control your fear and adrenaline.

That's my main point im trying to make

  • Actually meditation, zen exercise, and some other samurai thingy helps fight your fears...but I true you can't control fear.

  • Blame yourself and your instructor not martial arts! Martial arts have been used effectively for hundreds of years. I myself have used martial arts in real life situations and have not had any problems. Martial arts only work in a fight if you know what you are doing!

  • so true

  • It all depends how you apply it, and what you practice and where. Most clubs only train in that method for competitions

  • so true

  • you may not be able to carry those aprticular ones, but understanding the principles of the weapon may make you more effecient with a make shift tonfa.

Why is this guy looking s out of shape?

Most good MA's schools, you wouldn't really get someone of his rank that high up with what looks like borderline obesity...

  • besides being illegal to carry around and therefore totally useless for self-defense never EVER use the handle lol

  • weapon techniques are cool and presented well in the vid. but when are u going to actually going to be attacked and have a tonfa convienently nearby

  • as said before, you should never use the handle...

  • You should never use the Handle, you can easyer lose your weapon

  • Amen.... someone knows... lol

  • lol

  • @444Wyrd14198 If you're good you won't. Not really that difficult, we have weapon sparring here at the dragon dojo, and it's really fun. Tonfas forever!

  • @444Wyrd14198 and that is why there are handles ... nonsenstalk

  • @444Wyrd14198 only if you put the handle within their reach of grasp, which is probably why he hooked the guys leg instead of his arm

  • @444Wyrd14198

    It's a hook and a hammer. It's legit.

  • there are three types of grip with tonfa, Honte mochi, gyaku mochi, and tokushu mochi ,to difficult to explain how to use here, but to change grip the tonfa is not flipped there is a much faster way and safer,to find out i suggest find a good teacher

  • he's not it... lol

  • if that was a double bladed weapon like the gokuda first made(sickest version ever) it then flipping the weapon would be unreasonable obviously. the technique to the weapon lies within the wrist and not with the hand and so flipping the weapon when it is in any form is never a good idea because it not only leaves much of your arm vulnerable but it also leaves the opponent to grab it from you in a reversal. that being said. don't flip any weapon. even if it at time seems like a good idea.

  • As to flipping your Tonfa, though it is a risky move and should probably be avoided, its not to say it should never be done. A flipped Tonfa is more easy to be grabbed and disarmed from you, and hitting with the handle with a strike like yokimenuchi is not much more effective then simply performing an extended strike while still holding the handle. Nevertheless, in a context such as choking/throwing an opponent, especially from behind, or disarming them, holding the Tonfa flipped can be useful

  • To paraphrase an old adage; It's not the weapon, its how you use it. Miamoto Musashi, famous author of Go Rin No Sho and dueler of fame, won many (most, if I'm not mistaken) of his duels with a boken, even against opponents wielding steel katana's. Though I agree, this video is not the most impressive, anyone who hasn't fought either of these gentlemen cannot say anything about how well they can fight. Infact, I think it would be a serious mistake to underestimate your opponent in any context

  • Great advice

  • With respect, telling a student NEVER to use the tonfa the other way around is like telling a student never to use the pummel of a sword or bladed weapon; or always kick forward, never backward. Any weapon is simply an extension of our body. A weapon's use should be explored and tested. Although traditionally, the tonfa is considered to be primarily a striking weapon. It is also, however a very practical grappling tool. Law enforcement has been able to perfect it's use in that manner.

  • law enfircement is a pain in the ass using unessairy force

  • never hit with the handle.... its easier 2 drop and itll break faster

  • also, if you were to try and flip the Tonfa mid-fight, you always have the risk of dropping it... then you're fucked, because as you attack with one, the other is always there to block a counter attack. But, as everyone has already said and already know. NEVER USE THEM THE OTHER WAY AROUND. if you are going to instruct someone do it correctly, or don't do it at all!!!!

  • I have been trained in the art of Tonfa Kata. and i'm looking for vids of what other people can do with Tonfa. and i find these two morons teaching self defence and not using this great weapon to it's full potential. not to mention the fact that you should NEVER use them the other way around!!! hands remain on the handle at all times. plus these Tonfa are square and large, it will be hard to use those effectively, with speed and accuracy.

  • scottstelth you say you have been trained in the art of tonfa, obviously you have not done any traditional kata, yaragua no tonfa uses tonfa the other way round holding by the shaft, this is where you get the overlap with kama ,and ican be used held by the shaft and used to hook, good foot work is most important with tonfa, especially when attacked with bo which is more powerful

  • no most are made of wood for police uses they will make them out of metal or graphite

  • Bunch of idiots that think these would break. Most Tonfa's are made of metal you morons. Obviously these are made of wood because of training purposes.

  • dont know where you get the idea most tonfa are made from metal, traditional tonfa are made from wood, metal would be to heavy get your facts right before you call people morons

  • maybe the purpouse of holding it that way is to be able to use kama techniques.

they are also part of ninjitsu, so that would'nt be that strange, would it?

it fits with the ninjitsu mentality as I understand it to improvise in such a way.

  • Never Flip the weapon.

Keep your hand on the handle at ALL Times.

  • you can flip the weapon

  • You CAN

But it is discouraged/unadvised in Okinawan Kobudo.

  • Indeed, the handle is there for a reason. Never "flip" any weapon, you need as good a grasp on it as you can get in real combat. Flipping it is an unnescecsary risk. The technique showed here as hooking with the handle works just as wel when hitting the leg with the other end is you ask me. There is some serious force in a tonfa strike. On the other hand I don't like the "hit along the direction of an attack" techniques. I tried many times in freefights and for me they never work as they should.

  • you guys all suck...I ve seen these techniques a thousadnt imes and this is the correct way to do them...

  • ? You're never supposed to hold a tonfa like that, it gives you limited mobility. Always keep your hands on the handle.

Besides, the handle would break super easy.....Then you're out of luck....

LOL Some ninja warrior he is.... :D

  • It sounded like a good idea on paper to use the handle but maybe not in practice. If it was made of metal or something stronger you could use the handle. But cutting a dude down for lack of information is kind of harsh.

  • this guy is stupid the handle would break

  • Wat r u talking about?

  • this dude is stupid tonfas were not made for the handle to be used as a weapon it would break quickly if it would dude a history check and do a good one

  • In martial arts no.

But police tonfas could be used in that manner. who cares what you can and cant do as long as you kill your opponent

  • well police batons have a slight diffence in parts and shape

  • yeah correct. Im not saying ths guy is right, but if you would have a tonfa made out of a single piece of metal or something it could be done. it would probably work as well.

But officially in martial arts its stupid.

  • wow
