  • If done properly like FilmRiot, then it is fine. I think they are great- it takes out unneeded time.

  • some great tips for video production

  • thanks for the explanation on jump cuts great the way that you have presented this video

  • at 1:26 mark says cu(N)t

  • I like jumpcuts.

  • I like jumpcutting. I think it makes the video interesting.

  • I always wondered why people did this

  • Hate to break the bad news to you, but Video Production is a dying Industry.

In fact, Video Production made the TOP 10 Dying Industries. It's forecast to drop another -37.8% between 2011 and 2016.

Bye Bye! I'm sure all your gear will look great in a Museum.

  • Production and post production are not the same thing. People will always need to get their message out.

  • Why would you want to avoid jump cuts. If it wasn't for jump cuts I wouldn't be watching videos on YouTube.

  • @ecwfan3052

I started the JUMP CUT look on Youtube back in 2005 and everyone copied me. Yes, even before LonelyGirl15

  • Funny video.. and although i understand where ur going with this, a jump cut can be a style aswell.. Most people will indeed not understand the meaning of zhe jumpcut, to them it feels like ur manipulating in the montage, but to me, the first cut in a movie is already manipulating the film. That's what montage is about. A nice example, No Direction Home, an Bob Dylan documentary made by the man Martin Scorsese himself.. He jump cuts like shit cuz.. why tell the boring stuff aswell?!

  • I wish your videos were still like this... sorry.

  • I love jump cuts,

The reason we watch youtube is that TV socks.

  • Well done

  • Great video. Thanks!

  • it's a part of internet culture now

  • you havn't seen pogobat (aka, dan brown) have you? he owns the jump cuts and makes them beautiful..

  • I love jump cuts, sadly. : p

  • Thanks Mark great advice!

  • Jump cuts have their places but proper shot continuity can get rid of jump cuts and still have things make sense but you have to know how to plan things out before filming. Be sure to see marks DVDs on how to set up your shots before actually filming things.

  • :O omg at 1:25 it dont sound like cut O.o lmfao

  • Not to put too fine a point on it but if you're making video training DVD's you ought to know that the rule to avoid a jump cut isn't "..move the camera over about two feet..."

Film and video production - shooting and editing - dictates that the camera angle should change by at least 30 degrees from one shot to the next to avoid jump cuts.

Even still, rules are made to be broken. Scorsese and Schoonmaker slammed the viewer with jump cuts toward the end of Goodfella's and it worked.

  • Jump cutting is a style. Used for comedy, keeping the viewer stimulated, entertainment. easier to edit (instead of taking lots of takes). I don't see whats bad about it?

  • This is the best video tutorial for Sony Vegas pro 9 that I have ever seen!!!!! Thank yo very much for the great help!!!! Long live and may the Force be with you :-) cheers man!!!

  • cool

  • Jump cuts can be incredibly useful depending on the situation. You can use a series of jump cuts to portray time passing. And I'm sure there are a ton of other effects it can be used for that I'm not thinking of. They used to just be considered a flaw in film making, and to be honest most of time thats precisely what it is, but that was before people, like the French New Wave, figured out what they can use them for.

  • cool!

  • cool video

  • Cool!

  • "Fog of War" - documentary on Robert McNamara. Editor/filmmaker used jump cuts throughout the movie and it worked very well.

  • Awesome!

  • jump cuts can be good if you know what you're doing, otherwise they look like shit.

  • lol that was awesome

  • raywilliamjohnson and danbrown do that ALL THE TIME.

  • depending on the video, the jump cut can be helpful

  • sometimes the jump cut works well, especially for vloggers, who wants to be in one spot all the time?

  • flam flam. I'm aware now.

  • 1:23 he says "So why are jump cunts bad" lololol

  • SUBCRIBED

  • Jump jump!

  • haha, great video cuts :)

  • gotta win! :D

  • eye opening. thanks a lot!

  • yep,...i hate jump cuts,...looks very unprofessional and confusing. Mark you are a guru,...damn gonna get yr dvd set......then you can buy mine when its made,....

  • Cool!

  • Hmm...so that's what it's called. Thanks ;)

  • Wow really? This guy is against jump cuts? He even dedicated a whole video just to tell us to avoid them? That's lame. Video/Film Production is creative expression. You shouldn't never stray away from any technique you feel goes with your video.

  • Jump cuts are generally bad news in a video but I know what you mean, it can be used as an editing style and in some videos it works quite well, but if you see one pop up every now and then, it's not really professional and takes away from what your trying to convey in the first place as people will find it distracting. I'm guilty of this myself!

  • thanks

    thats a good point

  • 1:24 jump cunt :D

  • You know I'm only here because I like the hat, right? It's all about the hat. Love the hat - it brings it all together.

  • Ok, the jump cut can be useful if and only if it is the part of the idea or the way of showing it.

Also, a jump cut occures when there is not enough match in contrast ( difference in lighting). That is one of the reasons why filming is a time consuming process

  • TELEPORT!!!!!!!

  • PICK ME I WANNA WIN!!!

  • Awsome!!

  • Graet Tipp

  • Thanks for the tips. I shall never Jump Cut again

  • Great..!!! You are the best, man..!

  • 'Alotta guys do it online here all the time, unfortunately I'm guilty of it myself, it's called....The jump cut' after his little Pron speech I expected something else...

  • Ahh! Jump cuts!!

  • Jump cuts looks more like teleporting... Urgh i hate that

Jump cunt.. lol! AHH! attack of the jump cunts, they're everywhere.....

    Great vid and info.

  • great videos!

  • When i film, i try to use different angles as much as possible, when i switch from cut to cut, it's gotta be the easiest way about it

  • jump it i know you can

  • Thanks for the advice!

    LOL @ 1:24 "jump cunt."

  • LOL

  • thanks, i actually had some questions about these

  • lol! its not tits and tricks cos its not porn!

  • I'm glad someone pays attention to stuff like this.

THANK YOU. jump cuts look so unproffessional.

i've caught the pro's doing it in old videos and you can really tell a difference. i'd like to see some more videos like this. i'd like to see a few on camera angles and why their important and why cut aways are good for flow. keep it up mark!

  • now i know how to do this and not make it so noticeable

  • MODERATION. I'll admit that a large number of people do that in their vlogs, myself included. However, just like anything else it's not always a bad thing. It just requires balance. Mark makes a great point here and it'll help a lot of people, but consider that some of the most well off internet personalities make use of similar editing techniques like sxephil, azrienoch, and the ninja from askaninja. I stand by my belief that jump-cuts are fine in moderation.

  • you are 100 procent true sxephil always i say always uses jump cuts and that makes it so intresting so jumpcuts aren't always bad

  • So thats what its called.

Jump Cut. I'll remember that haha.

  • OOH one of the best yet! I can really use this kowledge! you just keep giving don't you!!

  • Wow. That helped me so much! I never even thought of that. Thanks!

  • I like the idea thanks for the tips mark!

  • Interesting and usefull I think, no matter if he said "jump cunt" or not :-)

  • I will definitely try these two techniques because since I use Windows movimaker I publish really jump cutty videos so far.

  • I just tried that camera move trick in my latest video and it works very good...makes it look like you have a lot of cash for more than one cam LOL

Any time I can get my hands on two cams though I prefer using that setup and multi-cam editing it in premiere.

  • 1:24 Did Mark say "jump cunt"?

  • hahah yes lol

  • hahaha yeah he did

  • haha yeah he totally does.

  • cool

  • Interesting!

    Another good vid!

  • no french new wave?!?!

  • Thank you very much Mark Apsolon. You are always making very helpful videos... and I wish to make love to you in the near future.

  • Hello Mark, I have question, How do I do a presentation like this video presentation, ( i mean just begin this video) with still pictures ?

    Thanks

  • Okay, I think I am guilty of MAJOR "Jump Cut" usage. But I don't know. Please tell me what you think? See my videos on the playlist "The Reluctant Heroes", and tell me what YOU think.

  • I think like anything else, jump cuts are only bad when you aren't conscious of your reason for using them. They can be good for music videos or animation, or anywhere where you want it to look unnatural. But if you have a strong narrative going, jump cuts would take the viewer out of the story as you say.

  • Excellent video, Mark!

  • thanks!

  • dude, what's with the new youtube video size

  • its a new feature. it makes the video look bad ..lol I will uplaod the next video in real widescreen so it will work fine

  • thanks everyone for all the comments on this video. I normally respond to everyone I got really behind this past weekend. I hope I can catch up by the end of the week

  • I think I have to really change all my videos to widescreen for youtube now..lol 16:9

  • Tell me about it. We'll change our vids to 16:9 widescreen, just so a few months later they can change it back to 4:3 and we're stuck with stretched out images. ;)

  • hmm....i was thinking about doing a jump cut video. guess not! haha

  • Mark, you are so right. I myself never use jump cuts. Of course, I didn't know what they were until about three minutes ago- but I don't have time to cut stuff. Do people really stand in one position, pause, move, start again, pause, move, start again, or just move and then cut them all together? Or is that something that isn't a jump cut? Is it only a jump cut when you "accidentally" do it? I don't know. I've got to go it's supper time somewhere.

  • That is a close definition of a jump cut, but I think its more when its done by accident. Like in 2001 sace odyssy (SP?) during the meeting in the red chairs at the begining, the person has his hand in mid-air, the next second the camera is zoomed in slightly, and that same hand is now on his lap. It has to do more with actions or something. I wouldnt consider the first example of your jump cut a real jumpcut. It could be an effect or something?

  • this is out dated philosophy.

Jump cuts are another tool we can use to create a certain style or mood.

  • Hey Mark, great opening sentense! Love it, and nice instructional videowork as always :)

  • I don't know if I fully agree with you. I think for vlogs, the jump cut is acceptable.

  • I think that jump cuts are the biggest difference between vlogging and actual productions. vlogging=jump cuts good, any other video form=jump cuts bad.

  • you got to love b-roll it almost always saves you lol especially with jump-cuts

  • I will have to try moving my cam around some more, I tend to just keep it in place too often. Great video.

  • lol tits and tricks.

  • Itsbrent does jump cuts in every of his videos ! I think i looks cool !

  • Jump cuts look good, i dont think it is bad, when used intentionally. I like!

  • hey what editing software do you use??

  • Mark, can you come over my house and fix my green screen?

    xD

  • sxephil does that all the time

  • yep

  • Jump cuts are good if Ask-A-Ninja says they are. Got it?

  • Mark is a God in a tin ^^, another helpful video Mark. I try not to use jump cuts anyway :)

  • 1:24 "Why is a jump cunt bad?"

  • HAHAHAHAAAAAAAA LMAO

  • lol..i only recently tried a jump cut for the first time on one video. won't do that again...ha ha

  • Why is a jump cu*t bad? =O

  • Tits and Tricks, I'm stealing that line from you Mark! :D

    Awesome.

  • Try Tips for Tricks my response is linked, lol.

  • the baddest guru on YouTube. period.

  • tits... and tricks

    haha funny intro line

  • Yeah, I think thats what makes vloggers who they are with using this. It adds alittle comedy to the charactor, but like you said can look very unnatural and distracting.

  • Good.

And that hat is becoming you. Nice hat.

  • Ohh, woah, yeah, those are some great tips, I would've never thought of that myself :P

    Thanks for the great advice!

    Keep it up~ :)

  • there you used that tits and tricks joke xD

  • Funny:D

  • Could you make a video reviewing the camera samsung vpmx10?

  • I'm a tiny bit guilty of it but I really try to stay away from it. It seemed to be a style at one point though.

  • are you sure you don't mean jump the shark?

  • but I like jump cuts, but I agree if you're working on a professional production avoid the jump cuts, unless of course you're filming a scene where someone jumps into a room full of angry ninjas...

  • 1:25 "Why is a jump WHAT bad?" Are you sure this isn't porn? I like jump cuts. I don't always use them. Randullbull never uses them. He's a pro. I'm proud of you Mark. You are doing a great job. I want training DVD's for Christmas!! Jump WHAT???????

  • hahahaahah all I can say is froyed would be proud of you....lol

  • Oh he was just mad at me for making fun of him in that clip.

  • Great advice! Jump cutting is Very Annoying!

  • Funny thing is, I'll probably use jump cuts now! Lol!

  • i was actually just editing a video of someones music playing, and we had a few cuts where they were interrupted by the intercom, so this realates to it alot, very nice vid!

  • Great advice Mark.

  • Awesome trick. I should keep that jump cut thing in mind.

  • thanks for giving us tips about that. I do that way too many time myself.

  • I have that video too!!! I'm gonna watch it tonight!

  • crap!!!! I just did a video for youxtubexallstars and I did all jump cuts

and it didn't look right to me but I thought I was just being hard on myself

but your right I screwed up!!!

  • Hey it's really wonderful to learn about these little tricks and to learn the language too.

I have realized that this is turning into a very fun little hobby...why are all the good hobbies so dam expensive?...

    Thanks for the tips.

    Trevor

  • I jump cut so no one can hear me add the "n" to cut.

  • I agree on crappy jump cuts, but....If done correctly, and not wide open and crazy some jump cuts arent bad, if done well

  • Jumpcunts and Porn, Hmmm.. You must have watched my video, Tips FOR TRICKS, lol, what are you thinking about for tonight?

  • What - no porn? LOL Anyhow, personally I like the jump cut, a) because of Jean-Luc Godard and b) because if you can't move your camera a lot, a jump cut is an easy way to make your video more lively. But yes, it's the wrong way to do it. :D

  • Thanks Mark. and cause of you i am now Trying to be a photographer when i am a adult because you impressed me so much i keep thinking about video than my school work lol.

  • 1:23! MARK! LMFAOO

    Thanks for helping me out.
