  • I have a question. When the surgeon pins the ear back i've seen some cases that the top part sticks out or looks elf like. Does that mean that was a mistake from the surgeon. Because i've seen other cases and th ears look naturall after the surgery. Hope you understand what im trying to say. Please reply as quick as you can. Thank you.

  • @ecalb1 Ears should look natural after surgery. I suspect you're describing what is more commonly known as a "telephone ear" deformity (which is sometimes limited to the upper half only). Avoiding that look requires a certain awareness by the surgeon pre-op since certain anatomical configurations are more prone to that. It *can*, however, be avoided. It can also often be corrected post-op as an in-office procedure.

  • I gotta do this lol

  • My bandage is off now, im so glad i did it! :)

  • Going to get the bandage removed now, its been a hard week but totaly worth it!

  • @BrutalEightBit Glad to hear things are going well!

  • Man, my ear destroyed my self esteem and made me a very closed up person for many years of my life. Only recently, in my final years of high school have I opened up and regained my confidence. Luckily as people grow up they mature and noone said anything about my ears for a couple of years now. Perhaps I'll still get the surgery done one day just to completely get rid off the years of ridiculing and emotional scarring my ears caused.

  • I think I'm going to get this done, I'm sick of everyone making fun of me, it SUCKS. People don't realize how lucky they are to have normal ears, everywhere we go, we get made fun of and get stared at. It aint fair!!! This needs to be covered by insurance cuz this causes some serious psychological damage to children like me.

  • Just got mine does 3 days ago! Quite pleased with the results but let me tell you they're SWOLLEN like mad! I have a question though, I hear sometimes these ears can 'protrude' back to their normal positions? Is this true? I do hope it lasts a life-time. I know as you get older cartilage starts to grow, etc. But I hope they don't pop back out! :'(

  • @BootboyJohnny The ears should not be expected to "pop back out" unless the sutures used to reshape the ear are broken, extrude, or tear through. The procedure is designed to last a lifetime otherwise. Enjoy your new look!

  • @fpsurgeon

Thank you for the kind words! I will be extra careful. :)

  • I have question, what harm does it do if you bent your ears forward a month after surgery .

Will it make the scar bigger or make the ear protrude more ( come out more) or is it something else...

    Thank you.

  • @michaels543210 You should probably talk to your surgeon if you're concerned. Depending on the degree of trauma to the ears in the early post-op period, all of what you described is possible (but unlikely).

  • hi, i was just wondering how much would it cost give or take to do just one ear?its only my left ear that pops out but my right ear is fine.if anyone has any idea on how much is a fare price to pay for surgery on just one ear let me know i would like that alot ....thanks!

  • now his nose looks big

  • I just got a quote of $5,000. My case isn't very extreme either, but I think the place I went to just has 1 price. It's a little bit more expensive than I thought, and the procedure looks a more invasive than I hoped for too. I wish they'd just work on my concha. I have decent folds so I don't want to be folded back too far, or in an unnatural way. Still a little sketchy on the whole deal. I'm like 60/40 on it after talking to the doc.

  • @nintruendo If a patient has any uncertainties about the surgeon or the process it's best to find another surgeon who the patient can be comfortable with. And if there's still doubt, don't proceed with surgery.

  • you know who needs otoplasty? Jordan Farmar from the Los Angeles Lakers lmao, with all the money he's got you would think he would've already gotten this done, but i guess hes happy and doesnt believe the need to get this.

  • @mcluvin28x Indeed he does have very prominent ears. Obviously he doesn't mind them, though.

  • How much would this cost in the US on average?

  • I've done this operation 2 days ago and yeah it hurts a little after the operation but will be worth it :) I would recommend everyone who has this problem to do the operation as soon as possible i was laughed at so many times at school, on streets, etc... I'm 17 years old and i'm glad i won't be laughed at anymore :)

  • Glad to hear it. I suspect you'll be surprised how quickly the healing is from this sort of procedure. Enjoy your new look!

  • Hi Dr. I was wondering how long patients need to wear the large protective dressing after the procedure, I think that would be one of the deciding factors for me to do this. One or two days would be fine, a week would be a bit long. Also would it be possible to get the ears pushed back just slightly, like a 2mm or so? My ears don't protrude a whole lot, but I think a little would make a big difference. Thank you for this support you offer.

  • Check out my site for the full answer, but the short answer is: one day. As for the 2mm, yes, but would it be worth the hassle for just 2mm?

  • yes your right, it wouldn't be worth the hassle, but I think i miss calculated. Probably more like a cm or so. I was really getting at how precision plays out, and how accurate Otoplasty really is. Its good to know, Because that is one of the things I was quite concerned about. It would be terrible to go through with the surgery and discover it went much farther then you intended. Thanks again for the support Dr. It is much appreciated.

  • @fpsurgeon do u know how much it is bro?

  • My financial coordinator, Heather, can give you a precise quote.

  • @fpsurgeon k tnx for the reply but i dont know wat u mean

  • You're welcome. I mean to call my office or use the contact form on our website.

  • how much was it i have this problem too my ears are big and pointy

  • @Boogeymany man i had the same prob as u, mines stick out really out.! n ppl call me ears now insted of my nam it hurts me a lot! can u explain wat u did? and how much it was? wat i mena by wat u did is lkke where did u go? hospital? and wat do u say. im afraid tht they might laugh t me =[ plz help bro

  • how long is the UK nhs waiting list

  • how much is this otoplasty??????? I really want this..... I want my ear to be fixed once and for all.

  • 2-3.5 k in usa

  • wait its free for kids?! im 15, and this would be free?! O_o, if not how much would it cost about? haha

  • mine is getting done this summer because i got a really bad situaton of it

  • how many people have stick up ears and how many not ?

  • Studies find that about 4.5% - 5% of the caucasian population have prominauris (prominent ears).

  • did it 15 days ago and it looks so great, i couldnt be happier! Now i can watch the dumbo movie without getting sad lol...

  • Glad to hear that you've had a nice result! It does make a big difference, doesn't it?

  • @joevicentini

cool does it hurts after the op ?

  • We've found that about half the patients complain of a headache while the dressing is in place (usually 24 hours) and half have very little pain at all. It seems to be more related to the dressing than the surgery, strangely. Those people who get a headache from wearing headphones will be the same ones who have more pain from the dressing, it seems.

  • @joevicentini i feel you lmao! they call me dumbo :)

  • @joevicentini LOL.. Awww thats so cute

  • become a danish citizen and get free health insurance then it would be free to get this surgery

  • Hahahaha! Yes, "free."

So who pays for all the "free" stuff in Denmark? (Hint: Denmark has the highest income taxes in the developed world). ;-)

  • yeah so what? living in denmark is way better than in usa here if you dont have a good job and dont earn so much you can get money support and if you are homeless you can also get an apartment and you got children you also get money support dont think that how it works in usa home of the fat people

  • My point exactly: the lazy in Denmark mooch off the rest of the people.

Hopefully some of the "fat people", as you say, and the lazy here will read your post and move to your "way better" country.

  • @cenarulesedgesucks

Not true. I live in Germany, also free health care, and I just paid 2,000 euros for the procedure. It's only free if its necessary. Stick out ears is not something that has to be corrected.

I am 1 week past my surgery, and while it was more painful that I had thought, I am so happy I did it!!

  • 4-5,000 in n.cal

  • please can someone tell me how much it costs?

  • like $3,000 plus $1,000 for hospital use if the doctor chooses to do it in another place.

  • I want this done to me, but how much does it cost?

  • ugh!I HATE THIS SURGERY!so yeah i had it about 3 days a go the itcing is killing me.i got very sick from the anesthesia was throwing up all day the first day all the way down to the bile :( but i get bandages off in 2 days and the are itching as i type.oww

  • Sorry to read that you had such a rough time with anesthesia! Most patients don't have much, if any, nausea, but if they do it's probably the worst part of the whole deal. Hopefully you'll have a great result, though, that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Hang in there!

  • i got my bandages off a few days a go and they look great!i have to sleep in a headband for 2 weeks.but im glad i got this surgery done :).

  • how did it go :)? i had my otoplasty in march. im so happy with them. i never look in the mirror and like just look at them and feel sad about how they look anymore.

i hope you like your new ears :P

  • alright so after it all how much does the bill amount to?

  • I had this done in august but doent the permanent sutures dissolve or are they still in my ear

  • Conveniently, the definition of "permanent sutures" means that they're permanent. :-)

  • im getting it done for free in ireland, the goverment are paying for it because of another surgery i need but i want to know how long recovery will take because im getting it done soon and going on holidays in about two or three months please reply

  • 1) Not to be snarky, but you're not getting it for free. The tax-paying Irish citizens are paying for it. Governments don't make money, they take money and redistribute it. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;-)

    2) Recovery is pretty minimal for most patients, but since every surgeon is different in his/her post-op routine, it's best to ask your surgeon. Most of my patients can be back to light activities almost immediately. I usually suggest a week off work and two weeks of no strenuous activity.

  • I WANT! :(

  • I think general with sedation is better..

But will it hurt while they are putting the anestiesia in my ear??

And whats the best thing to do in those 1:30/2 hours during the surgery so i dont think on it....

  • I saw ur site.

Thanks it answered some of my questions but i still have many..

I wasnt deadly scared before i saw those videos.. I understand that every surgery must contains blood.. its surgery... But it really freaked me out..

Im 15 years old, for my age would they put me on local or general anestesia?? Whcih is better?

And will the surgery hurt? i mean all of those things that they will do to me, is that going to hurt?? will the anestesia hurt when they put it in ur ear??

  • I prefer that my patients have otoplasty under general anesthesia, but local with sedation is an option for those so inclined. Pain is generally low unless the dressing gives the patient a wicked headache (which sometimes happens). That pain, though, goes away quickly once the dressing is off.

  • Ok now tell me please everything about this surgery.!! have u done it???

tell me everything about it.. is it really really dangerous???

cause yesterday i saw a video on here and i really got sick from it and now im deadly scared...

    please tell me!!!

    thanks

  • You shouldn't be deadly scared. Surgery is always serious business, of course, but then so is driving on a highway. My website (see the video's title) can probably answer most of your questions.

  • I was sure i want otoplasty till now when i just saw few videos on youtube of how otoplasty is done and its ahhh it looks sooo scary... they cut ur ear and lots of blood everywhere ahhhh it really freaked me outt!!!! i know i wont be watching while they are doing that to me but still...

is it really that dangerous or does it just look like that to me?

cause i was like totally sure i want this surgery and know i got soo pissed off ...

    does this operation affect hearing?

    should i get it???

  • Properly done, otoplasty should not affect hearing.

  • Hi there, im 15 and my parents dont know yet but i want to tell them soon that i want to go to a doctor to get my ears checked cause i want to have an otoplasty. not my both ears are protruding its mostly my left one but the right one need little correction too..

so for all of u who have done this surgery please tell me how is it, how does it feel everything every single detail..

did it hurt, how long it took, everythin!!!

    thank you !!

  • can u make the ears trim?

    like make them shorter?

  • There are some things that can be done to make the ears "shorter" (meaning smaller vertical dimension, not lower positioned). Lobe reductions, wedge excisions, and banner flaps can all reduce the size of the ear, depending on the patient's specific anatomy.

  • hey man i want tthat surgery but my parents dont take me serious im very self conscous about my ears they are worst than the kid on that video, im 17

  • dude i suggest you tell your parents how you feel man. i`m 38 and I`m barley getting them done this year without a doubt. if your self conscious about them then do it man dont watse your life worrying like I have.

  • i am getting this done on the 2nd of march, Im nervous about it, im 16. how long do you have to wear the head bandage for, then what is the after care like? do i have to wear a headband at school?

  • Your surgeon should have discussed this with you. If they haven't discussed these things, I suggest you find a better surgeon.

  • My surgeon is with the NHS so i am hoping that i am in capable hands. but still i would like to know

  • Then ask your surgeon. Each of us has different preferences.

  • hey I`m getting my ears done this year but i wanna come up with a reason other than for self consciousness, of why I got the surgery. I just dont wanna anyone to know that I did it because of some childish reason. I`m 38 and since my early teens I been wanting to get my ears done but ive been to afraid to admitt it

  • Most of us would change something about our appearance if we could. Not all of us have the courage. More power to you. And if you want some fun reading about how better looks influence others, pick up a copy of Nancy Etcoff's book "Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty."

  • i got my bandages off yesterday

  • How is it so far?

  • Does anybody know how much this would cost to get it done in Scotland?

Because i really want it done to my ears.

  • its free , at least for children , im 15 almost 16 and got it done a week ago

  • i heard its 2,500

  • i think in Scotland it`s $3000 lucky charms. LOL

  • HAHAHAAH good one

  • Something like this should be covered by insurance, I have never had prominent ears but I have seen the mockery it attracts, people take a lot of shit for being born that way.

  • i got it done yesterday too nurse said my ears would be blue and battered i got it done in crumlin hospital in dublin

  • just had this done yesterday...covered in bandages at the moment...looking forward to seeing the results

  • Hope you have nice result.

  • i had in done yesterdat aswell. the bangages r pissing me off. but i'm glad i've done it. also i'm not expecting perfection. just being realistic bout the results. bandages come off in a week. tell us how it went, mr ring 007. lol.

  • damit!! I want this!

  • No way..

I only wished I had google this when I was in 1st grade..I guess I'm just going to stick with my dumbo ears.. :/

  • Because I'm 18 yrs of age I have to pay from my pocket... OHHH MANNNN!!!! and its $4,000- $5,000

GREAT! I think I'm going to cry

    I have no insurance!

    WHY AMERICA!! WHY!?

  • Even if you're under 18, most insurance companies no longer pay for otoplasty and consider it strictly cosmetic. The rare insurer may cover it, but that's the exception, not the rule.

  • how much is it in the u.s??

  • whats the risks of the surgery i mean after...it could return to the way it was after a while i mean when the stiches stil on ur ear it could back to the position ? i did this surgery befor two weeks but im afraid that my ear get to the way it was...so please tell me im really worring....sorry about my english,...thanks a lot

  • (to elias225) once the stitches are out you may find the ears are swollen behind (where they operated on) that swelling will push the ears forward slightly however after around 3 months the swelling should be pretty much gone and your ears will be the right size and shape. Someone I know had it done also and they have nice ears. Hope this helped :)

  • I HAD THAT DONE!!!! :)

  • i m getting that... Next week,\

    LOVE desdoll

  • My son has protruding ears like that it's really noticeable, maybe even worse than that boy :/ but his father won't let me get them fixed despite the fact, he's being ridiculed by his peers. :/

  • In Ontario if you are under 18 it's covered by OHIP. otherwise the cost range from $4000-$5000 depending on procedures required.

  • yes .. how much is it.. ???

  • In u.k its bout £3000 to £4000 but i had mine done in hungary and if you put it in pounds it was about £2000.

  • How much is it in canada?
