I have a question. When the surgeon pins the ear back i've seen some cases that the top part sticks out or looks elf like. Does that mean that was a mistake from the surgeon. Because i've seen other cases and th ears look naturall after the surgery. Hope you understand what im trying to say. Please reply as quick as you can. Thank you.
@ecalb1 Ears should look natural after surgery. I suspect you're describing what is more commonly known as a "telephone ear" deformity (which is sometimes limited to the upper half only). Avoiding that look requires a certain awareness by the surgeon pre-op since certain anatomical configurations are more prone to that. It *can*, however, be avoided. It can also often be corrected post-op as an in-office procedure.
Man, my ear destroyed my self esteem and made me a very closed up person for many years of my life. Only recently, in my final years of high school have I opened up and regained my confidence. Luckily as people grow up they mature and noone said anything about my ears for a couple of years now. Perhaps I'll still get the surgery done one day just to completely get rid off the years of ridiculing and emotional scarring my ears caused.
I think I'm going to get this done, I'm sick of everyone making fun of me, it SUCKS. People don't realize how lucky they are to have normal ears, everywhere we go, we get made fun of and get stared at. It aint fair!!! This needs to be covered by insurance cuz this causes some serious psychological damage to children like me.
Just got mine does 3 days ago! Quite pleased with the results but let me tell you they're SWOLLEN like mad! I have a question though, I hear sometimes these ears can 'protrude' back to their normal positions? Is this true? I do hope it lasts a life-time. I know as you get older cartilage starts to grow, etc. But I hope they don't pop back out! :'(
@BootboyJohnny The ears should not be expected to "pop back out" unless the sutures used to reshape the ear are broken, extrude, or tear through. The procedure is designed to last a lifetime otherwise. Enjoy your new look!
@michaels543210 You should probably talk to your surgeon if you're concerned. Depending on the degree of trauma to the ears in the early post-op period, all of what you described is possible (but unlikely).
hi, i was just wondering how much would it cost give or take to do just one ear?its only my left ear that pops out but my right ear is fine.if anyone has any idea on how much is a fare price to pay for surgery on just one ear let me know i would like that alot ....thanks!
I just got a quote of $5,000. My case isn't very extreme either, but I think the place I went to just has 1 price. It's a little bit more expensive than I thought, and the procedure looks a more invasive than I hoped for too. I wish they'd just work on my concha. I have decent folds so I don't want to be folded back too far, or in an unnatural way. Still a little sketchy on the whole deal. I'm like 60/40 on it after talking to the doc.
@nintruendo If a patient has any uncertainties about the surgeon or the process it's best to find another surgeon who the patient can be comfortable with. And if there's still doubt, don't proceed with surgery.
you know who needs otoplasty? Jordan Farmar from the Los Angeles Lakers lmao, with all the money he's got you would think he would've already gotten this done, but i guess hes happy and doesnt believe the need to get this.
I've done this operation 2 days ago and yeah it hurts a little after the operation but will be worth it :) I would recommend everyone who has this problem to do the operation as soon as possible i was laughed at so many times at school, on streets, etc... I'm 17 years old and i'm glad i won't be laughed at anymore :)
Hi Dr. I was wondering how long patients need to wear the large protective dressing after the procedure, I think that would be one of the deciding factors for me to do this. One or two days would be fine, a week would be a bit long. Also would it be possible to get the ears pushed back just slightly, like a 2mm or so? My ears don't protrude a whole lot, but I think a little would make a big difference. Thank you for this support you offer.
yes your right, it wouldn't be worth the hassle, but I think i miss calculated. Probably more like a cm or so. I was really getting at how precision plays out, and how accurate Otoplasty really is. Its good to know, Because that is one of the things I was quite concerned about. It would be terrible to go through with the surgery and discover it went much farther then you intended. Thanks again for the support Dr. It is much appreciated.
@Boogeymany man i had the same prob as u, mines stick out really out.! n ppl call me ears now insted of my nam it hurts me a lot! can u explain wat u did? and how much it was? wat i mena by wat u did is lkke where did u go? hospital? and wat do u say. im afraid tht they might laugh t me =[ plz help bro
We've found that about half the patients complain of a headache while the dressing is in place (usually 24 hours) and half have very little pain at all. It seems to be more related to the dressing than the surgery, strangely. Those people who get a headache from wearing headphones will be the same ones who have more pain from the dressing, it seems.
yeah so what? living in denmark is way better than in usa here if you dont have a good job and dont earn so much you can get money support and if you are homeless you can also get an apartment and you got children you also get money support dont think that how it works in usa home of the fat people
Not true. I live in Germany, also free health care, and I just paid 2,000 euros for the procedure. It's only free if its necessary. Stick out ears is not something that has to be corrected.
I am 1 week past my surgery, and while it was more painful that I had thought, I am so happy I did it!!

Sorry to read that you had such a rough time with anesthesia! Most patients don't have much, if any, nausea, but if they do it's probably the worst part of the whole deal. Hopefully you'll have a great result, though, that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Hang in there!
how did it go :)? i had my otoplasty in march. im so happy with them. i never look in the mirror and like just look at them and feel sad about how they look anymore.
im getting it done for free in ireland, the goverment are paying for it because of another surgery i need but i want to know how long recovery will take because im getting it done soon and going on holidays in about two or three months please reply
1) Not to be snarky, but you're not getting it for free. The tax-paying Irish citizens are paying for it. Governments don't make money, they take money and redistribute it. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;-)
2) Recovery is pretty minimal for most patients, but since every surgeon is different in his/her post-op routine, it's best to ask your surgeon. Most of my patients can be back to light activities almost immediately. I usually suggest a week off work and two weeks of no strenuous activity.

(to elias225) once the stitches are out you may find the ears are swollen behind (where they operated on) that swelling will push the ears forward slightly however after around 3 months the swelling should be pretty much gone and your ears will be the right size and shape. Someone I know had it done also and they have nice ears. Hope this helped :)

My son has protruding ears like that it's really noticeable, maybe even worse than that boy :/ but his father won't let me get them fixed despite the fact, he's being ridiculed by his peers. :/

In Ontario if you are under 18 it's covered by OHIP. otherwise the cost range from $4000-$5000 depending on procedures required.
