Day 208 of Firsts: Spend Three Hours in a Wheelchair

I use a cane. I did Dland in a wheelchair once n thought, how the heck can I pull my own weight uphill? No wonder people use power chairs! Having less physical abilities, +meds can impact the wheelchair experience. In this day n age I'd think we'd have come further, but sadly we have not. I think more disabled would be out in the world if people treated them better, they'd get hired, n places were more disabled friendly. There should be disability day where everyone uses a wheelchair for a day?

I have tried to get people to just roll down the street with me and THEY WOULD NOT even sit in the chair. People look down on wheelchair users, period. I have a masters degree and cannot get hired because people cannot deal working with someone w/a disability. WE NEED AWARENESS SCHOOLING FOR NON-DISABLED!!!

@musing1 i know - kids look at me funny like I'm retarded when I use my own manual wheelchair (which I need cause I can't walk anymore). It's not easy to use elevators either when in a wheelchair - it's a pain to turn around so you don't back over people when you need to get out. They don't make them wheelchair friendly at all. Disabled bathrooms are ok as long as they are 10m square but hinged doors are a pain.

@musing1 I would love to find out more and try out how to do do things while in a wheelchaiar im just not sure how

I'm a blind wheelchair user (blind since birth, but had a spinal cord injury in 2004). It's interesting to hear other people's experiences and how it changed the way they think. It does get easier when you've been using a wheelchair for awhile, but access issues and attitudes are still the major issues!

More people should do that,it would show them it's not easy!
