(1) The Dutch first discovered the Falklands, (2) The French founded the first colony on the them and (3) Argentina's predecessor state had established an outpost there before the British invaded and forced them out in 1832.
The islands are nowhere near Britain, but they are right next door Argentina. They are simply a reminder of the bad old days of colonialism. Like Gibraltar, Bermuda, etc., they are an insult to the modern world.

I mean, the people of the Falklands have decided, through democratic processes, that they wish to stay under British sovereignity. It's only Argentina who seeks to regain it by any means necessary. I understand that it is a national cause for Argentina - but come on. Don't go against the wishes of the Falklanders.

I lived through that time and saw my once proud and great town, full of employment, businesses, factories, with happy people and future in 1981, become nothing by 1992; shops, factories and even the air base shut down, replaced by rampant crime, poverty, drugs, suicides, even now, 20 years, it has never recovered!

@CloeBuckingham most of what you mentioned is not heavy industry but yes they still exist, but they have diminished greatly in size to a shadow of what they were. The UK currently stands at 2.85 million unemployed which is the highest in 15 years also today it was announced the national debt hit £1 trillion for the first time, this is under a Conservative government (Thatcher's proteges).

@CloeBuckingham Thatcher's Monetary policies dictated that the UK change from a manufacturing based economy to a services based economy, she succeeded in handing the country over to the deregulated banks in the City of London, that policy has failed because the banks have failed. The cracks in her government happened long before the ECU crisis, it started with Westland in 1986 and between 1986-90 five cabinet ministers resigned their positions over her ever-aggressive decisions.

YES she did close most coal pits and used the riot police to beat the miners as they dared to protest about losing their jobs overnight, but not that... she closed the mines because it was more cost-effective to import coal from communist Poland. At the same time with Ronald Reagan, condemning the communist countries for being the evil of the world. She sure kept those commie miners in jobs though, bless her!

She was hated by her party for not joining the Euro (or ECU as it was called). Now she is loved by her party for the very same reason! How presentient!
She had Methodist values and was not personally greedy. However, her policies democratised the City of London.

They believed that the government should pay workers to build products that consumers don't want to buy or can't afford to. She refused to allow the country to be brought to a standstill by strikes. In order to provide better, cheaper and a more efficient funeral service for Maggie we must rely on the private sector and the greatness of capitalism.
