These dances from Thai Yai people in northern Thailand and northern Burma. The Thai Yai are related to the Thai. A lot of them live in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang provinces in Thailand. They are not related to the Burmese. The dance here is Thai Yai Ram Nok (bird dance) not butterfly. The Ram Dab (sword dance) is also Thai Yai. My girlfriend is a Thai Yai (Shan) from Mae Hong Son and I've seen these dances in Mae Hong Son province. I think these dancers are Thai Yai.
There are only 2 styles of Thai dancing here. That's not the butterfly dance, it's a bird dance. Fawn Nok Tai-Yai, Tai-Yai are from Burma. I grew up around Lanna so I know the Fawn dab and Drum dance well.
This dance group is from Chiang Rai, which borders Burma. All dancers are Thai, but I suspected the leader speaks some Burmese. So I guess it was either adopted by the dancers, or its not just Burmese but shared by very close neighbors . . .
