I'm glad that someone is posting these! I love to see others doing kata from Isshun-ryu, and I'm glad to know that the community has expanded to the internet as well! Please keep posting more of these!
I was always taught that the power came from the floor. Through the back hip, translating through the arm to the punch. This gentleman seems to be doing the kata slowly, for form, rather than for power.
it seems like isshinryu punches are only done with the weight of the arm behind it. is that the case, or am i missing something? no disrespect intended.
@karatefightr15 You're obviously not paying attention. All punches derive their power from the torso. The advantage of the Isshin Ryu vertical punch over the horizontal punch is that it's more efficient, faster, more powerful, and doesn't have the potential to put you off balance because of reaching too far.
@MelkorHimself But the power from the torso comes from a well balanced and powerful stance. Without such then the kata would be pointless and there would be no power at all. And in this video he might want to retract more and actually put more power into it because it looks like he's just walking through it. He drags his feet and his back foot is always on wierd angles. Just somthings I saw but then again every kata is done differently. :]
@karatefightr15 No offense taken. The power is generated from the ground. The mechanics necessary to deliver a sound strike are generated throughout the torso and into the spine, and finally delivered through the elbow. What you are seeing here is simply the mechanical movements of Kata. The display of Kata and implementation of said are quite different. Thank you for the inquiry...Peace
Thank you for posting these videos, I did buy them on VHS but it's alot easier pulling them up on youtube
