You aren't supposed to put cornstarch and sugar together on heat. You aren't even supposed to mix cornstarch with any ingredient dry. AND cornstarch is supposed to go last.
But I couldn't wait. If I could rate this on a scale of 1-10 it would be an 8. Sorry it would have to contain chocolate or crushed pineapple to rate a 10!!
I was supposed to make this Sunday but best laid plans etc. Went shopping and on the reduced table were 2 bags of shredded coconut reduced to 50 cents each!! STFD!! So when I got home I made haupia witha whisk in one hand and my iPhone in the other, watching this video. Mine even thickened when yours did. Spooky?? when it was done I put mine in custard cups and sprinkled some coconut on top. What didn't fit in the cups I ate warm!!! I know you said to put it in the fridge and wait til maña
I made a luau last year and haupia was one of the dishes I made. I loved it but my brother said it would be better if i added some toasted coconut flakes mixed into it.
It looks delightful! Never had a coconut based pudding. I'm with you on eing it less sweet; you probably get much more flavor from the coconut.
Cornstarch does that. It'll lay there and just look at you, and when you're about to give up and add more, it flips. The secret seems to be that it needs to *just* hit the boiling point to trigger it.
I tried making this dish for dessert the other night and i simply loved it!!!! ....Sooo good.. I gave a little to my grandmother and she wanted me to ask you if it would taste the same if she tried putting splenda sugar in it instead of regular white sugar? She is diabetic but she loves having herself a little bit of dessert every know and then! Thank you!
@SuperBianca86 They always say that you can use Splenda like you would any dish with sugar. I have never tried it, but you should give it a go. You'd only waste a can of coconut milk if it didn't turn out!
This looks so pretty it's so white. I'm sure it taste delicious too. Does anything with coconut taste bad? I don't think so. I don't think I've ever seen a pudding that thick before. I'm wondering if Dh could eat this with his diabetes. HMM I think we will have to give it a try.
@Ultimatecruegirl They always say that you can use Splenda like you would any dish with sugar. I have never tried it, but you should give it a go. You'd only waste a can of coconut milk if it didn't turn out!
You know Beth, the mixes are fine and very handy but I always find them to be a bit too gritty. Your made from scratch haupia looks much more smooth and delicious.
@MouseChirpy Yep, you're right, it is. This is silky smooth and yummy. I got it from a children's book, "Celebrating Holidays in Hawaii" and this one was to celebrate Prince Kuhio Day :)
I happen to have coconut milk on hand and was looking for something to make with it so I might just give this a try soon. I read what you said about pineapple desserts not really being Hawaiian and think of a Hawaiian Wedding cake that my grandma always made that we loved but I bet it also is not actually from Hawaii.
@Yaoiloverel The liquid in the coconut is technically coconut water, coconut milk, I believe, is what you get when you squeeze the meat of the coconut, but I may be very, very wrong. Try googling
@Piecesibble I'll see...I don't know of any to tell you the truth other than adding in cookies. I think that is in my garbage cookies, but haven't made them in so long that I cannot truly remember. you can add that stuff in to any bread also
I remember you gave away a haupia mix once in a contest? Or was that some other kind of pudding type thing?
I really enjoyed the entire series, so different from what we have here. I will now know to complain if my poi is too runny! "Waiter! Take this poi away! It is too watery!"
@yoyomax12 yep, the last time we did the luau dishes (I erased all those vids!), I had a giveaway of the haupia. LOL @ telling the waiter to take away the runny poi :))
Beth ohhhhhhh no you went there and showing haupia recipe. I sooooo drooling!! First it was chicken long rice and poi now this...phew good thing I don't like kulolo. But if you do laulau tomorrow I will have to buy one ticket back! Now I miss Ono's :( But seriously thanks for sharing. I have put fresh coconut or chopped up lychees into this. Yummms.
@winane I have not made the laulau. That would have been way too much food for our family. I will do the haole version of it though the thought makes me cringe. I don't want spinach on my food, I want the luau leaf!
@CookingAndCrafting I think you should make it with luau leaf and tell viewers they can swap it out with spinach. I've made it with spinach before it's not the same. Good thing it is available on mainland! Matter of fact I have some luau leaves in my fridge now. Too bad no buttah fish here.
@winane I couldn't give my true feedback on it if I swapped it out, however, I think ... why bother if my family would much prefer the luau leaf, so will do that.
We used to have it in school, called haole lau lau, with spinach. Still okay but NOT the same!
You can make it w/o the fish. I do! I'm not a fan of it, too salty. I like the flavor it lends, though.
@oOMusicIsLifeOo That may very well have accounted for some of the water. I didn't put it on right away but definitely before it had thoroughly cooled. I didn't want the top to get crusty, which it will, if you don't cover it up
when you come to maine can we please have a luau? i can help you make everything so i can learn it from the hawaiian. and then i will eat it all up. yum.
@snarkdetriomphe yes! Recently my friends kid graduated from high school. Why do I mention this? Because the last time I saw that kid, I made a 1st birthday luau in Texas. I did the kalua pig in an oven roaster, chicken long rice, lomi salmon and I brought poi. Put them in the 'traditional' throw away plastic and paper containers and everything. Lei etc It was fun :)
hey kid. i watched this in the middle of the night when i couldn't sleep. i think aggie has fleas. ugh. anywho, it looked yummy then and it looks yummy now. love the way it comes out in those gorgeous snow-white squares. l loooooooooooooooove coconut.
I just made it!! It looks so yummy and smells so nice : ) I took pictures also cause I could not find my video camera. Its in the fridge now and I cant wait to eat it late
@CookingAndCrafting yes and I loved it!! My husband does not like coconut much so he would not even try it lol but this is def something I will be making again : )
So I saw this and thought *I Need to make this* I love coconut!! But then thought it would be way to hard to make and I dont have coconut milk. But then I looked and I DO have 1 can of coconut milk. I like to drink coconut water that comes in cans and a few weeks ago my husband accidently bought milk instead. So Im going to make this asap!! Thanks so much for the recipes : )
