I used to cut firewood in central Texas and really big feral hogs would come right up to where I was working, even when the chain saw was running. I think they are smart enough to know when someone is unarmed or when the behavior isn't that of a hunter.

Animal rights activists don't like hog hunting because hogs are an endangered species right? According to them, wild pigs are almost extinct? but it's not like they're an introduced species who are competing with other wildlife, eat bird's eggs and compete with the native wildlife and make them extinct.
