Hearns was great, truly a game fighter in every sense. But if an opponent could clock him good, the fight changed direction quick, and many times stopped.
@smimot well actually he was only stopped 3 times in 67 fights but yes, a hearns fight was always a sight to behold. Duran was taylormade for hearns though...
IM A WHITE DUDE. FROM BOULDER CO.. HEARNS IS my favorite ever.. period point blank.. even his losses were flukes.. vs hagler broken right in 1st.. killlin sugar both fights. did ya know in 81 it was changed from 12 to 15 3 weeks b4 fight. at sugars request.. tommy won the first 12.. lopsided.... i know ul say barkley... a journey man... he was tommys kryptonite.. ill never digest it
@voodoo9606 Hearns would have probably lost to Hagler even if he didn't injure his hand. Hearns did not have the stamina nor could he take a punch like Hagler could. That is why he went out so fast against Hagler AND Duran. I do like Hearns (he is one of the greats).
That's so funny. I too am a white guy from Boulder, and Hearns is w/o question MY favorite fighter as well! No joke.
I wouldn't claim that all his losses were "flukes", but I will say that he literally never had a "bad" fight -- something which can't be said for most -- even the greats. I hear what you're saying about TH's broken hand vs. Hagler, but I still give Marvin enormous credit for weathering Hearns' blasts w/that bullet head. How many ever did that?
With his height and reach, Hearns should go up to light-heavyweight , then he got my vote that he was a great fighter. You see, Duran could not even reach Hearns because of the big disparity in reach and height. Beating kids in no way gets my respect. He could even tower some light-heavyweights of his era.
mi amigo tommy tenia 25 y el otro paria 32,roberto en ese tiempo era un hablador de primera de hecho aun de viejo ,el menciono que el podria vencer a pack man,si fueran de la edad, pobre ni en su mejor sueno lo haria.
Don´t put Duran down, respect him for the great fighter he was, a legend like Hearns, 2 All time Greats. Duran was 33 and had everything against him here, well, anybody who fought Hearns had to be ready to enter a world of pain. Just look at the 3 men who defeated him; Leonard had to retire for 3 yrs after Hearns destroyed his eye with that whip of a jab, Hagler looked like he´d gone 20 rounds after 2,5 rnds, with Hearns breaking his hand in the 1st round, and Barkley needed plastic surgery..,
Duran always said he was not at his best when he lost. Benitez,Hearns,Leonard rematch. When he lost to the best he was not at his best? Why? Why was he not at his best when he fought these legends? Either he was not very smart to not train or he is lying. So if you say Duran was not in shape you are saying he was not a smart guy. Because how else to you explain not being in shape for a Tommy Hearns caliber?
Roberto Duran was at his best during the 1970s as a lightweight. He was still very very good going into the 1980s as a welterweight given he beat Cuevas+ Leonard who is probably THE best boxer of the last 35 years. Duran went on to win the light middleweight+ middleweight title + take a peak Hagler the distance.
Duran fought in the greatest ever era of welterweight boxing. However, I don't think he would have beaten Hearns whenever they fought. Hearns had too many big advantages over him...
If you are alluding to father time beating Duran this time well that is an excuse. Duran was the champ of the WBA when he fought Hearns here, he was only 32 (later he fought another 35 times until he was 50) and he had fought at this weight since 1978 believe it or not and up to this point Duran was not knocked up or beaten up- how could he be washed up or father time catching up to him? No way!, Hearns had only fought at 154 since 1981, and Duran since 78.. Hearns just beat him legit.
Tommy will get into the hall of fame anytime he wants to get it. The reason he is not in the Hall of Fame yet is because the rules are a fighter cannot fight for 5 years before being inducted. Well he fought every year until April of 2000. Then he retired, and made a comeback fight in 2005 which was right before he would have been inducted.Tommy didn't let 5 years go by before fighting again. If he waits 5 years between fights he will be inducted easily. But I hear he still wants to fight at 50.
Thomas Hearns is massively underated because of his defeats to Leonard and Hagler but look at this fight Durab didnt land a shot on the Hitman and it's an absolute disgrace that Tommy isnt in HOF
wow, i NEVER saw Duran scared of anyone before, but here he was SCARED of the huge reach that Hitman had, and Duran hardly EVER showed sportsmanship in the ring in his career, yet here he is constantly touching gloves with Hitman, weird...fear is the killing factor, and thats why he got killed by Thomas, wow!
Thomas Hearns has an explosive right hand and when he unleashed it against Roberto Duran, Duran had no chance.
The problem with Tommy he has a big punch with his right, but he hasn't got a good chin, because when he fought Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley he could've won those fight, but it's his chin that lets him down.
You're all forgetting one thing: Duran is seven years older than Hearns. Put a 33-year-old Hearns out in the same fight and the result would be a lot different. Don't get me wrong, Hearns has always been a terrific boxer, but in this fight his relative youth was a very significant factor.
Still, he did make a really tough fighter like Duran look like a walkover.
Duran was not at his best. He could have hurt Hearns but Duran I repeat was not at his best. Too Much partying. I know him. Im not saying he could have won but he is a hunter and if he did hurt him later who knows. Duran hit him with 3 punches one of them was hard but still Duran was not at his best.
"Duran" "i repeat" gets knockout, face the fact man! And get over it. And i know thomas hearns is. "duran" hit him with what? 3 punches? oh c'mon man, "roberto duran" gets knockout with just one punch! SO, if you so telling me duran is the best? Fuck that! LOL XD
Sorry but Duran was not at his best.. I also Knew Duran and I also new the fame got to him....He was not at his best....Thomas Hearns and I will not discredit him but he fought a Duran that was not at his best.. Thats all. Don't Cuz cuz....Take care
Duran may have been past his best, but that is the ONLY time he was ever knocked out. Do you think he could have ever beaten Thomas Hearns? Duran was much shorter with a massive 10" reach disadvantge, he would struggle to get past Hearns fast, clever, hard jab+ was always in position for Hearns devastating right. Duran was an "in fighter" + against a 6'1" boxer- puncher he could not get close enough to score without getting hit very hard.
Styles make fights+ Duran style was made for Hearns..
I've noticed that three of his knockouts on youtube... (Roldan, Duran & Cuevas) all ended up with his opponents face down rather than face up... He hits very very hard...

Im sorry to say but mayweather will not get destroyed by any of these fighters. If Floyd Sr can take Sugar Ray leonard 11 rounds then i see no reason PBF can take Leonard to the distance. By They way PBF is better then his dad !!!
Plus... Hearns began with a four inches advantage in height and like 10 inches in length of the arms. Duran would have never been able to get close without getting hammered.
You's are saying that duran was never anything but he did end sugar ray's unbeaten record, plus he beat hearns's conquorer, barkley. He ko'd the highly favored moore at 154,even though he was expected to get annhialated. Then, you's ay virgil hill wasnt much, and then say it's incredible that hearns decisioned em.You's contradict yourselves!
moben, you really go out on a limb to rationalize about why you believe Duran is great, dont you. Well, at least your loyal to him. It would be nice though if he had been just as loyal to his fans as they are to him.
& you were right too, I DID used to talk up Duran, bigtime. But you know what, I read that book, & even though it may have been trying to talk good about him, it reminded me of a lot of things. The dude ALWAYS had an excuse. Even his family said so. Yeah, he had some rough times, but SO DID MOST OF THE GUYS HE FOUGHT!
But here we got to see exactly what was gonna happen to Duran in New Orleans if he hadnt been a poor sport & quit. Roberto could accept it better from Hearns though. He could never let Ray do this to him. He would have commit suicide first.
And Tommy gave Duran a worse beating than he had given Cuevas a couple years earlier. Hearns is the 1st guy who had absolutely no respect for Duran, not as a fighter OR as a man. Tommy could only respect other black guys. He didnt take anyone else seriously really. I mean, Hearns was ALL buisness, no playing around with Tommy
And if Roberto had been the man some of you guys believe he is, it would have been Tommy who he hated, not Ray. TOMMY was the one who had no respect for him. Damn, Tommy didnt even take Duran seriously as a fighter. He used to LAUGH when they asked him about Duran, & Roberto would just stand there & laugh WITH HIM! Duran never once talked shit about Hearns. & Ray had respect for Duran as a fighter
Tommy didnt even really have much respect for Hagler either though. He respected Ray though, they all did. Guys like Hagler wanted to PRETEND they didnt respect Ray, but deep down Ray was the main man. Tommy was man enough to admit that though. Tommy was tough
But even though it seemed like Tommy didnt have the respect for Hagler, He was never the same fighter after Marvin took him apart that night. That fight damaged him permanent. Duran would NEVER talk about Hearns the way Hagler did before he & Tommy fought. Hagler hated everyone he fought, he had a chip on his shoulder. He didnt hate Duran as bad because nobody was giving Duran a chance against him when they fought. He didnt even go after Duran that hard really
I tell you what though, I sure would hate to have to fight Hearns. I think I would rather be mugged up in the Bronx than have to fight Tommy like that
does it pump you up to mock an all time great lightweight?Who fought someone all wrong for his style only for the money.Money that you can only dream about!Hearns..Yeah!..Big bad freakin hearns,ko'ing a lil fat overblown lightweight!Hearns had an 11" reach and 6" height. He has the upper body of a 180 lb'er,perched on bird legs.Too bad he didnt have proportionate legs to his upper body. He'd have been 180lb's right then and there.
NO, what pumps me up is when everytime I look at my fukkin inbox it tells me youtube just left me another message frome some other dude like you, thats what. I am thru with this shit, i tell you what. If you dont digg the shit stop tellin youtube to send me those freakin messages
And so what if I mock him? He mocked enough people in his life that he can take a little back in return. He is a big boy, he can take it. If he dont like it, he shouldnt have quit. And he DAMNED sure shouldnt have promised that he would MURDER Ray if they ever met again, & then spend the whole night trying to stay away from him when he finally got the chance. I figgure if he would do those things, he must LIKE getting mocked
Hearns was mad at cholo ever since he had paid $150 for a ticket to the second Leonard-Duran fight. He felt Duran had ripped him off for his money when he quit
Damn. Hearns did NOT come to play this time, that for SURE! The look on his face right from the start says it ALL. He is in in the zone, I tell you that. Duran dont have a prayer. I hope he took out insurance, that Duran
My father once told me, as I was later to find out first hand, that it only takes one punch to turn a fight on it's head. It is the punch you don't see that will remove you from your senses and it can happen in a flash. It only takes for a fighter to be that little bit complacent, he gets CAUGHT and it's game over, Rover.
Yeah, no shit. I tell you what, Duran could have seen that coming 10 minutes before it landed & it wouldnt have made much difference. That punch was putting him down no matter if he saw it or not. That punch would have put down an elephant
You're probably right in saying it would have put an elephant down but if you want to open your eyes, you'll see - as I did - that he DIDN'T see it coming. It caught him FLUSH and knocked him COLD. I even have reason to believe it would knock me out, and I am a BIG boy at 14 years of age and 52kg.
Thats right son, you a bigboy. If you want to grow bigger, you will stay away from punches like that. Better stay at least 20 feet from Tommy Hearns (or do you call it centimeters?)
Duran should have retired after beating Davey Moore the previous year. Hearns destroyed him. Hearns was one of the best in the ring at finishing off an opponent.
Yeah.He was quite fun to watch.Too bad hagler didnt give em a rematch.I always thought that hearns would've taken em in a rematch.Hearns seemed too anxious and overzelous in the hagler fight.Should've paced himself better against hagler i thought.
Thomas Hearns had the best right hand in boxing history. The Motor City Cobra/Hitman was awesome in his prime. Too bad Kronk went under, I'd love to see Emanuel Stewards stable still sporting the old school gold and red...
total ass-fucking. my god, roberto had no chance. he was built for tommy, and look at tommy wail away on him and then go to touch roberto's gloves every chance he could. he had so much respect for him, even as he was pummeling the shit out of him. tommy was a class act---he did detroit proud when detroit had nothing to be proud of.
Hearns had the exact worst style for roberto duran, & his reach advantage made it almost impossible. I can read Durans mind on the stool between rounds " I doubt I can take more of those rights". This fight is very hard for me to watch, & always has been since it happened. But Duran came back against Barkley, I thought he was through here. He was amazing.
what a fucking right hand! That's gotta be right up there with the right hand uppercut Foreman hit Frazier hit with in the final seconds of the very first round in their first fight.
Hearns was great, truly a game fighter in every sense. But if an opponent could clock him good, the fight changed direction quick, and many times stopped.

does it pump you up to mock an all time great lightweight?Who fought someone all wrong for his style only for the money.Money that you can only dream about!Hearns..Yeah!..Big bad freakin hearns,ko'ing a lil fat overblown lightweight!Hearns had an 11" reach and 6" height.

If you dont digg the shit stop tellin youtube to send me those freakin messages
benjaminBarr 4 years ago
And so what if I mock him? He mocked enough people in his life that he can take a little back in return. He is a big boy, he can take it. If he dont like it, he shouldnt have quit. And he DAMNED sure shouldnt have promised that he would MURDER Ray if they ever met again, & then spend the whole night trying to stay away from him when he finally got the chance. I figgure if he would do those things, he must LIKE getting mocked

You obviosly don't like Hearns all that much, do you?

Hearns IS a hitman. A real gunslinger, that boy
benjaminBarr 4 years ago
Hearns was mad at cholo ever since he had paid $150 for a ticket to the second Leonard-Duran fight. He felt Duran had ripped him off for his money when he quit
benjaminBarr 4 years ago
Damn. Hearns did NOT come to play this time, that for SURE! The look on his face right from the start says it ALL. He is in in the zone, I tell you that. Duran dont have a prayer. I hope he took out insurance, that Duran

utterly brilliant

Roberto duran is always ranked higher on a pound-4-pound rating than heaarns
I just don't see how!
svmsung321 4 years ago
I'll say. Hearns caught Duran flush with one good shot!
hawkeyemd38 4 years ago
My father once told me, as I was later to find out first hand, that it only takes one punch to turn a fight on it's head. It is the punch you don't see that will remove you from your senses and it can happen in a flash. It only takes for a fighter to be that little bit complacent, he gets CAUGHT and it's game over, Rover.
danjon10 4 years ago
Yeah, no shit. I tell you what, Duran could have seen that coming 10 minutes before it landed & it wouldnt have made much difference. That punch was putting him down no matter if he saw it or not. That punch would have put down an elephant
benjaminBarr 4 years ago
You're probably right in saying it would have put an elephant down but if you want to open your eyes, you'll see - as I did - that he DIDN'T see it coming. It caught him FLUSH and knocked him COLD. I even have reason to believe it would knock me out, and I am a BIG boy at 14 years of age and 52kg.
danjon54 4 years ago
danjon, that punch could have killed you dead. Dont even think about it kid. Hearns should have held up a sign sayin "Dont try this at home"
benjaminBarr 4 years ago
Thats right son, you a bigboy. If you want to grow bigger, you will stay away from punches like that. Better stay at least 20 feet from Tommy Hearns (or do you call it centimeters?)

TOMMY REALLY NAILED DURAN

Tommy Hearnes always had crazy power. just crazy for a man so tall and lanky!

H.E.A.R.N.S. stands for "Height, Execution And Reach Nukes Spanish-speaker"

Duran should have retired after beating Davey Moore the previous year. Hearns destroyed him. Hearns was one of the best in the ring at finishing off an opponent.

hearns may have not been the greatest but he was my favorite boxer, few fighters have ever been more fun to watch!
patrickbateman6666 4 years ago
Yeah.He was quite fun to watch.Too bad hagler didnt give em a rematch.I always thought that hearns would've taken em in a rematch.Hearns seemed too anxious and overzelous in the hagler fight.Should've paced himself better against hagler i thought.

Thomas Hearns had the best right hand in boxing history. The Motor City Cobra/Hitman was awesome in his prime. Too bad Kronk went under, I'd love to see Emanuel Stewards stable still sporting the old school gold and red...
Five4Finishing 4 years ago
The real (original) Hitman in action. His first fight with Leonard was a great one als.

Tommy looks like he has two cobras for arms. He's my favorite fighter of all time
jibrilkhalid 4 years ago
total ass-fucking. my god, roberto had no chance. he was built for tommy, and look at tommy wail away on him and then go to touch roberto's gloves every chance he could. he had so much respect for him, even as he was pummeling the shit out of him. tommy was a class act---he did detroit proud when detroit had nothing to be proud of.

He was amazing.
benjaminBarr 5 years ago
before this Durand had never been knocked out. Before this Hearns had said he would win by knock out in the second round.
wow, what a right by the Hitman at his prime: unforgettable

Roberto was way too small and already by then 32 years old and past his best!
