If you wander into a abandon mansion and see an old man he will show you a picture of your death. If the pictue is the old man theres no use running. I just wanted to acknowledge the great sense of decorum I have observed here with respect to my original comment that Thao seemed pretentious in this podcast. People called me on my comment, and with good reason, as I have come to learn. No one called me an asshole, no one called me a loser, no one suggested I perform a physically impossible act of coitus, people just posted their measured dissenting opinions, I listened, and came to change my mind, to some degree. Well done, people. Rock on!
hey man i just happened upon her hammers song and liked it & clicked here to see what she's about. i had to turn it off at 2:42 so i could continue to like her music. she did come off a bit williamsburgish or bushwicky. sometimes you gotta be pretentious to sell to pretentious people. listening to her talk was like watching the first 10 minutes of juno. "specimen of a producer" and "grows a really great beard" hahahaa! i'll still bump her shit i just wont kick it with any of her fans.
I understand what you mean for sure...but I don't really buy into the "damn pretentious hippies" or "greedy capitalists" stereotypes held by the opposing sides. Politically I'm a conservative Republican, and tend to be pro-business. However, I think that everyone has something to contribute, and I appreciate differences as they give some topography to life. If everyone saw things one way, then things would be pretty boring.
Considerin this is the only recorded interview I know she doesn't seem pretentious. She's really nice; I saw her last week and she was friendly and amazing.
she certainly does come off a bit pretentious; I suppose you have to be a little pretentious, at least starting out, in order to be a success in the music world. Hopefully, as she gains confidence, she can drop the pretense and just let her work stand on its own. Let's face it, how many artists do we really want to sit there and listen to as they discuss and describe their craft? Not many. It's like an elite athlete, do we want to listen them talk about it, or simply watch them perform?

ah, statikdog, quite the comedian, aren't we? When I hear an unknown artist talk for five minutes about their music, using phrases like "... one of my most lyrically-introspective, honest works", please, that is the very definition of pretension. If your music ios good, it will speak for itself. We love you Thao, spend more time making good music and less time talking about it, and I bet you will find it more rewarding. Perhaps pretension, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
I honestly don't see the pretense in answering a question honestly. Acknowledging that there is a lyrical element in her music, that the words and the honesty and expression of them is important to her as a musician is just being truthful and it makes sense. If your problem is that she's not letting her music "speak for itself" are you against her doing promotions at all? Explaining yourself when asked a question doesn't seem pretentious.
OK, I appear outnumbered on this, and the posts are intelligent and I respect them. Perhaps I was harsh in my assessment, and I am willing to admit to questionable judgment. And for the record, lizwhiz, I am not a fan of artists, even established ones, who feel the need to explain and prattle on about their craft. 99 times out of 100, there is no great mystery or secret or arcane bit of alchemy involved in the creation of great art. It speaks for itself and does not require explanation.
99 times out of 100, I would agree with you. I've never before wanted to hear someone talk about their music...I just want them to shut up and record. This is the exception. Part of Thao's musical appeal is its distinctive crafting, and I'd like to hear anything she has to say.
