  • It's beautiful! Also -maybe even more- when you live meters away!

One of the things I miss most...

Thank you for posting this and bringing my home a little closer to me!

  • Nice video :D not nice when you live just meters away trying to sleep :(

  • This is buzzed up my friends! I'm from North America and I tell you when you go for the first time in your life in Europe, smoke a thing and walk throught these Amsterdam churches ringing their 0'clock bell, it's pretty buzzed up!

  • beautiful!

  • The Zuiderkerk ghosts were ringing the bells to greet your curiosity..☺

  • awesome

  • hypnotizing, mesmerizing. i love Amsterdam, it's something mysterious about this city... thx for posting this vid.

  • I was inspired to go looking for church bells ringing on YT as I sat reading over some mail...and hearing the church bells here, in the very near distance. Thank you for posting this as I can listen to them whenever I want, now. Beautiful scenery, too.

  • Fantastic, thanks for the video !

  • This ringing was for an old lady that was dying en she heard this bells from the last time (I heard from somebody)... She did ringing from 19.00 hour till 19.15 hour... -> ->(in the history when she was younger)

    ps. NICE VIDEO

  • Congratulations and thank you so mouch for uploading this. Beautyful sound of those bells, very soothing and calming. thanks again

  • I am glad that you liked it. I have heard the bells several times since I made this video, but the atmosphere was never so quiet and peaceful as it was here.

  • My "Sanctuary!!!"...

  • Take a look at this vid..

You may even want to try ringing the bells ;).

    watch?v=n6qZZLIvccg

  • Wow, another video has popped up. Thanks for informing me.

Now I know where to go at New Years Eve :)

  • ow no...

you can ring them every month;)

    just ask the sacristor.

gosh: I too want to ring those bells ^^

  • What do you know!

    Another vid...

You can also ring the bells on OpenMonumentendag or the Open Monuments'Day.

Each year in Septembre I believe.

    Just enjoy the vid

  • Sorry, wrong vid

    That was the oudekerk.

I just discovered this after pushing the button of 'previous page' ^^

Also doable isn't it? And also four bells in a cord.

  • I also learned that the ringing in the video is only part of the whole session. After 17:15 chimes are made, not by swinging the bells, but by pulling the clappers only.

  • I was invited to join the bell ringing on 5 January and it was a great experience to see the internal construction of this tower and to set the historical bells in motion. The big one from 1511 takes quite an effort to ring.

  • We Dutch-people are odd...

Sometimes churches ring for no reason...

Just for the sound of it: to make the citizens feel like they live in a city.

This saturday-ringing probably has its roots in 'ringing-in the sunday'.

It sounds amazing though, and thanks for ten minutes of joy!

  • I also got some information about the bells. There are four bells. Two of them are cast by Hemony. Then there is the millennium bell and the fourth one is the oldest and second largest bell in Amsterdam. It dates from 1511. Thanks to FransNL47 for this information.

  • The mystery has been solved. I have now been informed that this ringing takes place every first Saturday of the month. It surprises me that I have never heard this before although I live not so far away from this tower.

  • This is a peal ringing, it is sometimes rung for holidays or a special occasion, it may have been requested by somebody for a birth, death, etc.

  • I believe that many Dutch churches with carillons also have separate bells for swinging peals. Hearing four bells in a major chord with octave is rather unusual, though.

  • Not in the big churches of Holland ;)

    It's called the festival-motiv I recall

  • Perhaps they were just doing a test? You mention lecture rooms, is it a university owned church? Perhaps the university has a bell-ringing club?

  • The church is owned by the City of Amsterdam. There is an information centre for town planning and you can rent lecture rooms for meetings and presentations.

  • We do not have a bell ringing club here in Amsterdam for as far as I know. If we did, I have no doubt that people would complain about the din :-)

  • there is a guild called "het utrechtse klokkenluidersgilde"

    they tested ours as well

  • maybe not but they are clearly being swing chimed there- perhaps just for a change :).

  • sounds like the bells are swinging probably for a service or something and theres also a carillon attached too where they are struck by hammers to produce the tunes.

  • This church hasn't been used for services since 1929. Furthermore, the interior has been modified during a restoration. There are now offices and lecture rooms inside. Therefore it is unlikely that the bells are ringing for a church service.
