just got a GSP a week ago and I will tell you what, the brackish water worked WONDERS for his health...he was showing signs of stress (two dark "lines" beginning at his nostrils)...keep that in mind people THESE FISH NEED SALT (and NOT AQUARIUM SALT!)
what caused your puffer to die ? i have 2 of them and there are about 6mons old now ..i have to trim there teeth now can't eat ..and i have them in a 50 gallon tank with 3 huge parrot fish ..i call them Ren/Stimpy they chase the parrots away from them it's funny they get along great
a lot of people are saying their puffer's mysteriously died after a couple of months unexpectedly, would this not suggest they need some sort of brackish tank in the long run?
Hi:) I Have 3 Green Puffers Named Rawr,Yin,And Yang.
I Have Two Questions See I Have My Puffer fish in spring water is that okay?
And Also Um Rawr Started fighting with yin and yang (he was biting at there tails)
So There In Sperate Tanks My Mom Think Rawr Is Just A Mean Fish But I Think Diffrent See Rawr Is Smaller And Yin And Yang Are Bigger Maybe Its Genders?Male And Females? Im Not So Sure. Please Help! And Reply!
@diego123451562 i bought mine in walmart and sold as freshwater.. but i tell you.. there is a big difference of the fish and coloration if tanked in a salt water.. Fugu chan was in a salt water tank and he loves it
@diego123451562 Green Spotted Puffers are brackish when small and saltwater when adult. Buy a wide range hydrometer and marine salt and keep the Specific Gravity around 1.006 when they're really small (1 inch)...and for every inch they grow, add 0.003 until the fish grows to 4 inches. Then you can raise the SG up to 1.020-1.022, which is already saltwater.
i have 2 green spotted puffers that are the best fish ^_^ i had some small minnows that were to be food but now if you separate them they go to the corner and just lay there they all get along in fact my puffers haven't eaten any other fish at all cept for a craw-fish not even the plants in the tank
This puffer pretty sweet :) walmart sucks at taking care of there fish i just saved a lil puffer fish from there poor lil guy. Where do i get snails petco dont have them..
I just got a GSP, and obviously, Walmart being Walmart, tells me that I only have to feed them Tropical fish food. And now I find out they have TEETH! Lol And I kinda learned about the hydrometer but all I have is a little pathetic fish bowl. I don't even have a big tank. Idk what to do. He's so little, too. Idk how big his snails or crustaeons shoudl be.
i just got my puffer fish yesterday, and so far i have him in a fresh water tank ,so should i switch him to brackish water or fresh water is just fine?
They seem to do better in saltwater. I got a GSP from WalMart and immediately put her in my 55 gallon saltwater with my clown and coral beauty and is still healthy and getting fat 2 years later! :D
If it's a green spotted puffer like in the video, then yes, a brackish setup is the best. When he gets older you can also switch him to a full marine setup for even better results.
I just got a spotted puffer today, the freshwater variety, and he is so adorable, lol. My brother breeds his own snails, so once a week I go to him and raid some snails from his tank to feed my little puffer. I also got some freeze dried food for him, so in combination with the snails I should have no worries about his teeth, I hope... This is my first puffer, so still figuring a lot out. But one thing is for sure, he is not a GSP.
i feed mine earthworms and crickets that i find outside .... and i also give it shrimp that u can buy at walmart (the people kind) ... im gonna get another tank to breed snails in...
Do you know how big they get? And also when one of them is bigger than the other you can say bye bye to that smaller one. These are very aggressive puffers.
Not necessarily.. While they ARE very aggressive, the bigger puffer may just pick at the little one if you have a big enough tank and they have plenty of room to themselves. If it gets very hungry and the little one is bite sized in a small habitat.. then yes, say farewell.
they are absolutely brill pets! i only got them this morning yet they are just so cool! they went beserk for the food when i fed them, nudged the filter when i turned it on, and swam towards the light when i turned that on!
can some1 plz tell me wat equips do u need to grow a good and healthy gsp(green spotted puffer) ex wat equips like heater, filter etc and wat is brackish water and when they grow to be an adult do u need salt water
I miss my puffer... it was so happy and energetic, always friendly to me, then one day it stopped eating, and gradually became less and less energetic... then it died. :(
I heard the teeth grew beyond normal than other fishes. So, something like shellfish or w/e would have shaped their teeth. I'm planning on getting 2 puffers for college soon =] I hope they're good pets.
On they color of his belly you can tell he is not feeling well. You have probably kept him on freshwater i presume. Yes? These puffer must be on brackish
@redeyedol After a year u have to put salt rocks in ur puffers water so it can survive because when it grows up the puffer will need salt in the water to be able to happy
originally the goldfish was for him to play around with and eat, though he never picked on him and months later when the GSP died, the goldfish stayed next to his side
Snails are a must. Although the teeth/beak won't necessarily for sure grow too long, they are molluscavores...and they love their snails...nom nom nom. Get smaller snails. Usually pet stores will give you some for free. I have spoken.
I saw a fish, kind of square looking when I was schnorkeling in thailand. It was awesome, anyway I am not sure, but when I am thinking of it, I believe it could be a puffer fish, I aint sure, because it was pretty big. with HUGE eyes.. But it could be..
hey man i have a video and i go to upload it and i write everything and get everything done but it doesnt upload it just stays in my videos what do i do to get it to upload?
pertty cool i had 5 but i didnt have a heater so they died they live in brackish water they get pertty big so you might want to watch how big of a tank you put it in. You can see them go too 'feeding my puffers' my name is austinrodrigues look for me. I like this video 5 stars i rate
Bioload requirements for these guys is 30 gals per fish, since they get to 6" and can be territorial when past juvie stage... Looks like a fat happy puffer you got there!
Up to six inches, over the next ten years. You'll eventually need a tank that holds 30 gallons per GSP, so if you have three, you'll need a 90-gallon tank. Yes, they recognize you. They're very smart.
The best food for them is snails, about the size of their eyes, and any crustacean, really - shrimp, etc. Bloodworms are great, too. Just make sure that they get crunchy, live food at least once a week. If it's not crunchy, their teeth will grow too long for them to eat and will need to be clipped before they starve. If you don't offer crunchy food at every/most feedings, you should also supply a cuttlebone for gnawing.
you're absolutely right! this is a big problem for many puffer owners who's puffers just "stop eating and starve to death" -- how does one provide a cuttlebone for a puffer? I have a friend who works a petshop with a "freshwater" fahaka puffer. I figure if it's being kept in freshwater at least make sure everything else is right so I told my friend. Snails didn't work but he now feeds the fish hard pellet food instead of live feeders! I want to teach him about this cuttlebone thing!
I've done it before, its a good chance they're going to try to kill each other. You can put some kind of metal screen between them. Send a video when you do it. Good Luck
I have a small GSP i just got him!!!!!!! and my 30gal tank is completely freshwater because i have some african cilchlids in there... im afraid thtat if i make it brackish the africans wont survive, what should i do?
wonderful tank and wonderful fish. come check out my tanks. and leave comments and tips for keeping care of these gsp's. It will be going in the tank that i show at the end of the video.
Yeah you need a brackish tank, meaning there should be a certain amount of sea salt. A puffer will survive in freshwater, but not for very long, plus it's immune system will drastically weaken, I recommend you salt that bitch.
Why does these things die so quickly. They live up to 10years and everyone kills their GSP after 6months! is it because they are overfeeding? or not adding marine salt??
its because people mistake figure 8 puffer fish for green spotted puffer fish they are very different fish green spotted puffer fish need a tank that is over 40 gallons because they grow up to 10 inches long and figure 8 puffer fish grow up to 2.5 inches long and need a 10 gaooln tank!!!
and most people dont know that green spotted puffers have this tooth that grows really big and it can stop them from eating so you have to feed the GSP feeder snails so that it can break that tooth and you have to feed them the snail every mounth and a half!!
A.People don't know that they are brackish water fish and they need marine salt, not aquarium salt.B.They do overfeed because they're so hard to resist.C.They're very delicate fish, they have no scales and it makes them more susceptable to water changes.D.People don't give them the right nutrition, these fish have to have snails.E.They're not for beginners and stores 99 percent of the time have misinformed information on the fish.
Very true but add in that they also eat mussels and other bivalves. Hard shelled inverts are good too. Also being susceptable to water changes makes these fish less disease resitant causing them to get internal parasites, ich, lice, etc. One should cautiously treat these fish without scales as most any treatment is caustic and will "scrub" a fish. Causes some nasty itching in a puffer. Cute as they are and as easy as they seem puffers are not the easiest fish to care for.
MUST GIVE THEM SNAILS!!! and ghost shrimp is good too. i feed mine krill often but snails are a must and ghost shrimp right behind it. krill a good everyday diet
I have had GSP for almost two years. I got him when he was just a tiny baby. He is living apparently very nicely in a ten gallon tank and is now almost 3 inches long. I just have been adding conditioning salt. He is basically in fresh water/not brackish and is doing fine.
is it natural for a puffer to eat blood worms and then shit blood worms?!!!?!??! i bought mine today and they ate blood worms and now they are shitting blood worms HELPPP
I have one named 'Professor Aronax' his tank is 10 gallon and set up brackish. Awesome personality. I've been known to hand feed him bits of porkchop.
LOL at the song choice.
RIP Puffer though :(

Hey i just bought four spotted puffer fish. I didn't add any salt in the aquarium, just the conditioner. Is that bad? please reply a.s.a.p.
jfranc123 3 years ago
Yeah you need a brackish tank, meaning there should be a certain amount of sea salt. A puffer will survive in freshwater, but not for very long, plus it's immune system will drastically weaken, I recommend you salt that bitch.

lovely video!i have 2 figure 8 puffs and they are adorable

Why does these things die so quickly. They live up to 10years and everyone kills their GSP after 6months! is it because they are overfeeding? or not adding marine salt??
Koyori5 3 years ago
its because people mistake figure 8 puffer fish for green spotted puffer fish they are very different fish green spotted puffer fish need a tank that is over 40 gallons because they grow up to 10 inches long and figure 8 puffer fish grow up to 2.5 inches long and need a 10 gaooln tank!!!
Legoman2255 3 years ago
and most people dont know that green spotted puffers have this tooth that grows really big and it can stop them from eating so you have to feed the GSP feeder snails so that it can break that tooth and you have to feed them the snail every mounth and a half!!
Legoman2255 3 years ago
A.People don't know that they are brackish water fish and they need marine salt, not aquarium salt.B.They do overfeed because they're so hard to resist.C.They're very delicate fish, they have no scales and it makes them more susceptable to water changes.D.People don't give them the right nutrition, these fish have to have snails.E.They're not for beginners and stores 99 percent of the time have misinformed information on the fish.
Kaystar87 3 years ago
Very true but add in that they also eat mussels and other bivalves. Hard shelled inverts are good too. Also being susceptable to water changes makes these fish less disease resitant causing them to get internal parasites, ich, lice, etc. One should cautiously treat these fish without scales as most any treatment is caustic and will "scrub" a fish. Causes some nasty itching in a puffer. Cute as they are and as easy as they seem puffers are not the easiest fish to care for.

Aww! My puffer fish would do the EXACT thing!
My puffer fish I named Poofie died too.
She was such a good puffer fish.
Mine died right after she laid eggs, but she was the only one in the tank..
So I'm still wondering the exact reason she died
:(

Is a 29gal/110 liter aquarium big enough for 2 green spotted puffers??????
ZOEY101VIDS 3 years ago
yes thats big enough, though I use to have 2 spotted puffers and they'd always fight and nibble on each other
DomoKun619 3 years ago
they are NOT supposed to fight each other. apparently they were in too small an aquarium. 29 is hardly big enough for one.
puffcrusader696 3 years ago
no! go 55 or up! 40 for one is minumum so 55 at least for two!!!
puffcrusader696 3 years ago
I have had GSP for almost two years. I got him when he was just a tiny baby. He is living apparently very nicely in a ten gallon tank and is now almost 3 inches long. I just have been adding conditioning salt. He is basically in fresh water/not brackish and is doing fine.
