Not as much as I mean that technology has advanced so much and is so omnipresent that it's lost it's luster. It's taken for granted. Kids are not impressed with it, but still insist on it. Now, something like this Speedway that used to fascinate is "ho hum". Kids today don't know what that feeling is like to see something like this for the first time back in it's hay day.
Absolutely. When I was a kid, arcades had become less popular and there were none in my town. When I went to my first arcade, I was just mesmerized. Then I got an Atari :D
These old games that were more hardware than software I still find fascinating. Who would have an idea to construct something like this? It's one this to have a game idea and stick it on a console or smart phone, but to have to build the whole "game system" yourself like in the video? That impresses me.
First time I saw this game in Argentina was in the middle 70s. I was about 10 years old (now 45) and used to beg my parents to take me to the place and give me some coins. I can t believe it. I thought it was called Speed King. May be it was an alternate version or may be it is a long time for me to remember the exact name. But what is incredible is that i remember exactly the sound and noises. Wow!! I miss those times...
@CoolDudeClem Electrical contacts on cars drawn on spinning disks projected on a mirror, believe me, this video game was very popular and could be played everywhere back in early 70's
I remember playing this in the early 70s. I was very young, perhaps five or six years old at the time. I vaguely remember being pretty good at it once you get used to a certain rhythm.
That is awesome! EM games are the coolest! And that looks to be in great shape. There was with an explosion as well. I forget the name, but it's featured in the original Dawn of the Dead. I grew up right by where they filmed it. I miss the 70's:(
@StaciAutumns This is similar but not exactly the same as the game from "Dawn of the dead" as that one displays an "animation" (or more like a moving slide) when you crash.
Wow, I saw this game when I was on vacation in the Netherlands. Being born in 1982 in Germany where arcades were pretty rare, I guess it was lucky to actually play with one of these old electromechanical games. Very cool :)
i had this game on my porch when i was 11 or 12. my uncle was mowing the yard and a rock busted the glass out of it. or at least he said that was what happened. probably did it for spite.
OMG! This is it!!!! I have been trying to try & find/remember the name of this game for years. I played it last, 30+ years ago! I was like 5-6 years old! It was a sit down version though. So cool! Thanks for posting!
Played this like nuts when I was young. I'm 41 now but these machines were still on camping sites around here when I was around 10 or so. Great cab, but you play lousy ! The trick is to stay behind the fastest car and then "pump" with the gas pedal. That way the other cars will move out of the way clearing the road. I had mastered this game after lots of play and could play it "blindly" without accidents for endless time. I think I may still know the pattern ;) ;) ;) ;)
@AtariAndre42 i laughed out loud when i read your post. we camped all summer when i was a kid, and every time we got to a campground, my dad would give us all his change and my brother and i would find the rec room and play all these great old games!
I was born '71. In the early 80's my dad played in a lounge band. The circuit was Pocono Mt Resorts PA & Atlantic City NJ in summer (then Vegas in winter) I spent summers on the road & lived most of it in Atlantic City. We lived in motels/hotels all of which had an "arcade" (some smaller then others) in the 80's. When we stayed, I couldn't wait to check out the motel arcade. Also, the Boardwalk in AC, had DOZENS of arcades in the 80's! Some were HUGE, 50-100+ arcade games! A child's dream!
Nope, it wasn't Pole Position. PP and Turbo by Sega had explosions after a crash too, but the game I remember looks a lot like this... in fact, it even had the Firestone logo somewhere.
I sure remember this game, although my parents would never cough up quarters to play such a thing. I'm curious as to how the accident detector works - do you know if it's optical or mechanical?
Wow, that is very cool. Just like the handheld Tomy "Digital Derby", but with realistic graphics! haha (and this is before the coin operated video game was invented!)
Now that's what I call creative!

This fascinated the hell out of me when I was a kid---I'd spend hours staring into that cabinet trying to figure out how it worked.

A wonder lost on kids today. They have so little to be spellbound with anymore.

@TheJediCharles What? Do you mean to say technology has become less spellbinding?

Wasn't there an explosion animation when an accident happened? Or maybe I'm confusing this with another game?

You're thinking of Namco/Atari's F-1, and that explosion used to scare the holy hell outta me when I was a kid.
I think you can find a clip of the game in action on George Romero's original "Dawn of the Dead" movie, in an arcade scene.

I believe the accident detector is mechanical. It works the same way as some of Tomy's electromechanical handheld racing games.
