A lovely singer. Direct and unforced. Do try to catch her Octavian in Karajan's film of Der Rosenkavalier ( a film which also helps to explain the appeal of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf).
Scala977 I totally agree with your comments about Jurinac and Gruemmer. Let's add Lisa della Casa to the list , and perhaps Irmgard Seefrid "for disarming simplicity of utterance." I'd rather not discus Mrs. Legge in this context.
Sena was a remarkable soprano and unfortunately underrated and overshadowed by bigger names in her time - Callas, Sutherland, Caballe, Price, etc. She was singing in the same time as the big name singers. She was not only an excellent Mozarat soprano but also of Strauss opera. A beautiful voice with a glistening top and creamy middle (though she had no bottom) - an angelic voice if I ever heard one
Ks. Sena Jurinac remains one of the greatest singers of all time. Her interpretation of Octavian in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier is legendary. I had the great privilege to study voice with her in the late 80's and 90's. She is a woman and an artist of class and I will always remember our work together. I only wish that I had seen and heard her live. Her kind of singing has sadly faded away. Aspiring singers should listen carefully to her; her flawless pitch, legato line and effortless top.
I agree with u totally. schwarkopf can be almost artificial at times, but thats what kinda attracts me to her. but then again to each their own. there is no denying though that all three of these ladies were totally special in their own way. although i think jurinac was a bit underappreciated compared to the other two.
i like schwarzkopf alot, and i think her top register has this halo around it that makes it sound great, but vocally speaking i think both jurinac and grummer had superior voices, they jsut lacked that flair elisabeth had.
Despite the fact that Jurinac's voice was usually not the most exciting on records and that there is a marked decline in her singing from the 1950's to the 1960's, I would include her, particularly for her Mozart singing as well as certain other roles she excelled in.
Definitely one of the 100 best. Gorgeous woman who knew the art of simplicity but was never dull. Her beautiful flowing Mozart hardly prepared one for the truly terrifying Kostelnicka she became; one of the few greatest operatic impersonations I've ever seen or heard.
Best soprano ever! Want to hear something more private about her? She was said to tell such funny stories that people fell under the table with laughter! (I have this from a former friend. Who knew her well.) Also, in Vienna she was know as "die Sena". (whereas all the other sopranos were called by their surname. Die Nilsson, die Callas and so on.) This was because the audience always felt so CLOSE to her!
I was wondering if you would include Sena Jurinac in your collection. I see with pleasure. that you have. She is one of my favourite sopranos and it's a pity that we don't have more of her. Thank you.
RIP.

Very beautiful. I still prefer Rise Stevens in this role (and a number of others - hope she's on one of these lists; your picks or ours)

A lovely singer in every way. Too bad the conductor seems to be in such a hurry.

I never said that I was, a friend set up the page for me and for some reason put 24.

I have always loved Die Sena. I saw her twice as Elisabetta in Don Carlo and lady Billows in Albert Herring both in Wien and I really loved her.

Then I suppose that you are not 24 years old. :)
