Haven't read all of the comments on this one, but sure looks to me like Buddy was battling a cold or a bug or something. Incredible playing, though, as usual.
The trumpeters look as though they have stepped out of a 70's school photograph. The second on the left looks absolutely petrified. Was Buddy that bad to work for?
The people trying to find a fault in Buddy's playing...... it makes you feel important don't it ?...if you only heard yourself from where I stand. You couldn't be that good even in your dreams.
Few drummers could drive a big band like Buddy. The only others that come to mind would be Louie Bellson, Ed Shaughnessy, and possibly Mel Lewis. I love them all!
Thank you Herbie for writing and arranging this incredible song....and for playing a huge part in my life...Not a day goes by that I don't miss you...love forever LE
tell me about it.try getting your hands on the ronnie scott double album which features this track played at a much more playable tempo, but yea buddy always played 4 on the bass drum including accents.
My god, what a band! It wasn't just Buddy, they were all spectacular musicians. I guess they had to be or else Buddy would beat them up and throw them out! Amazing clip!
The best, the Best, the Best!! And can we please stop wining about how Buddy was so hard on his band! His bands sounded so tight and ryhtmically in the pocket just BECAUSE he had the discipline and respect of his band members! This has been attested by so many of Buddys former sidemen.

that's what happens when you don't play the same rehearsed garbage night after night..it happens to anyone who's REALLY playing from the heart and not the brain
I set Buddy's drums up for 2 years, The killer force band. They were nailed to the floor, including the snare. No mufflers except the strip in the Bass Drum. No felt or anything that would kill his sound. There set up on a sheet of A side plywood, if there was even a hint of a rug around him, he would leave you on the street. Try it sometime, brightens your sound, lessening your work...and believe me, he hated working hard. What you see here, he could do all night long, and not get tired.
Interesting comments.I remember when buddy played with his small band in Dublin,in the seventies the HiHats stand was giving him trouble & the roadie came out with new stand,Buddy was NOT happy,Still played 100%.The worst thing a drummer can have is a Bass Drum creeping away from you,not good.
Buddy did not have to bother with setting up his drums & if there is enough space above the crown of the cymbal to the swivel top then you don't need a felt washer on top.simple & straight forward
Maybe you mean Swivel tops instead of wing nuts.but there would have been felt washers under to support the cymbal.I used these as they were much quicker to mount & unmount cymbals from the stand
No one, absolutely no one, could propel a big band the way Buddy Rich could. His left hand was astonishing - any drummer worth his salt drops his jaw at everything Buddy did.
Godfather of jazz. This music is timeless.

Wow. Outstanding. The band is super-tight. Buddy is playing like he's posessed.

he clearly does it like its nothing, as you can see on 1:08 when he itches his nose and still shits all over the drums like the master he is...

Not that anyone cares.... you're here for Buddy Rich obviously, but that trombone player is really good!

My Hat!, or even my Hi-Hat!
So many good ones he served his time with, Webb, Krupa, Bellson, He saw em all off with Chicken Soup!
You were an arrogant S.O.B., Bud, but if God's not called Ronnie, you're in deep doo-doo. On the other hand, get your feet the Hell off my stage!!!!!

@sherom I think every "drummer" should get the DVD of this concert.
I just watched it again yesterday and damn, what a show.
I saw Buddy 30 times in concert, including about 8 or so with this band.
Let me tell you - absolutely INTENSE stuff here.
These crybabies are not drummers. Just 'cuz they have a $200 set of used Pearl Exports in their mommy's basement does NOT qualify them as drummers.
They couldn't catch Buddy if they lived to be 1000 ~

@MarkR1957 Yes correct, and makes me think of my drum teacher John Wadham who liked quoting to me 'So many drummers -------So little time!'
