  • Godfather of jazz. This music is timeless.

  • Thanks for posting this clip. This is great!

  • on point rhythm & finesse, the best left hand action ever heard!

  • Wow. Outstanding. The band is super-tight. Buddy is playing like he's posessed.

  • he clearly does it like its nothing, as you can see on 1:08 when he itches his nose and still shits all over the drums like the master he is...

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • Ok I give up. What's the time signature on the medium-fast transition section?

  • thats awesome he has time to wipe his nose

  • God damn, Buddy swings! The solo is sublime!

  • Amazingly tight rhythm.

  • par excellence on every level.

  • Haven't read all of the comments on this one, but sure looks to me like Buddy was battling a cold or a bug or something. Incredible playing, though, as usual.

  • Amazing control

  • This is one of the BEST video's of buddy I ever seen, All that speed and power.

One can't image eve playing like that.

  • The trumpeters look as though they have stepped out of a 70's school photograph. The second on the left looks absolutely petrified. Was Buddy that bad to work for?

  • Not that anyone cares.... you're here for Buddy Rich obviously, but that trombone player is really good!

  • My Hat!, or even my Hi-Hat!

So many good ones he served his time with, Webb, Krupa, Bellson, He saw em all off with Chicken Soup!

You were an arrogant S.O.B., Bud, but if God's not called Ronnie, you're in deep doo-doo. On the other hand, get your feet the Hell off my stage!!!!!

  • Stupendus !

  • the epic stick twirl at 2:43

  • The people trying to find a fault in Buddy's playing...... it makes you feel important don't it ?...if you only heard yourself from where I stand. You couldn't be that good even in your dreams.

  • @sherom I think every "drummer" should get the DVD of this concert.

I just watched it again yesterday and damn, what a show.

I saw Buddy 30 times in concert, including about 8 or so with this band.

Let me tell you - absolutely INTENSE stuff here.

These crybabies are not drummers. Just 'cuz they have a $200 set of used Pearl Exports in their mommy's basement does NOT qualify them as drummers.

They couldn't catch Buddy if they lived to be 1000 ~

  • @MarkR1957 Yes correct, and makes me think of my drum teacher John Wadham who liked quoting to me 'So many drummers -------So little time!'

  • really nice clip here, that change towards the end tied it all together, buddy rich is undoubtedly the greatest drummer of alllll time

  • 44 seconds? what you on about.?..perfect playing all the way...

  • Few drummers could drive a big band like Buddy. The only others that come to mind would be Louie Bellson, Ed Shaughnessy, and possibly Mel Lewis. I love them all!

  • @zildj1an Gene Krupa and Sonny Payne weren't bad :)

  • GREAT!!!! thank you! ^ ^

  • mikebuddy

    rather a sloppy clip...

    well its ok

actually after listening its quite hot

come to think of it its incredibly tight

getting right down to it .....it is absolutely amazing

    thanks for the show

  • thanks for the nice complements,i kinda like it myself.

  • Smokin!!! It was Buddy's drum dual with Animal on the Muppets that got me started many MANY moons ago.

Graduated from plastic buckets to real drums shortly after that.....good times...good times.

  • perfect performance, i could watch this a million times and still be in awe. buddy for prez!

  • Thank you Herbie for writing and arranging this incredible song....and for playing a huge part in my life...Not a day goes by that I don't miss you...love forever LE

  • I play this song all the time. The second half is a bitch especially playing the bass four beats a measure, with accents!

  • tell me about it.try getting your hands on the ronnie scott double album which features this track played at a much more playable tempo, but yea buddy always played 4 on the bass drum including accents.

  • Yes I have the double album on CD and the sigle album on LP. It is nice hearing "Superstar" without the background singers!

  • Good Lord!! Never could a band be as tight as this one!!! God bless you Buddy Rich!!

  • My god, what a band! It wasn't just Buddy, they were all spectacular musicians. I guess they had to be or else Buddy would beat them up and throw them out! Amazing clip!

  • The best, the Best, the Best!! And can we please stop wining about how Buddy was so hard on his band! His bands sounded so tight and ryhtmically in the pocket just BECAUSE he had the discipline and respect of his band members! This has been attested by so many of Buddys former sidemen.

  • He's amazing.

  • what happened at 44seconds!!!!!!

Buddy c'mon man thats just sloppy!

  • You jest my man!

  • You jest my man! - Mikebuddy

of course! I am a BR nut and have been since 1978 when he was on the muppets.

I have a recording of this called live at Ronnie Scotts - awesome

  • that's what happens when you don't play the same rehearsed garbage night after night..it happens to anyone who's REALLY playing from the heart and not the brain

    try it.

  • @pinball1970

Buddy is sloppy. I've heard it all now :D

  • its inspiring the amount of time and effort buddy put in to the art of percussion

  • From the DVD"Jazz Icons - Buddy Rich Live in 78" - from amazon or some local libraries.

  • I set Buddy's drums up for 2 years, The killer force band. They were nailed to the floor, including the snare. No mufflers except the strip in the Bass Drum. No felt or anything that would kill his sound. There set up on a sheet of A side plywood, if there was even a hint of a rug around him, he would leave you on the street. Try it sometime, brightens your sound, lessening your work...and believe me, he hated working hard. What you see here, he could do all night long, and not get tired.

  • Interesting comments.I remember when buddy played with his small band in Dublin,in the seventies the HiHats stand was giving him trouble & the roadie came out with new stand,Buddy was NOT happy,Still played 100%.The worst thing a drummer can have is a Bass Drum creeping away from you,not good.

  • Notice BR's ungodly right foot...

  • i'm on the edge of my seat waiting for BR to yell @ someone.... mad wild

  • Could Buddy and the band have been even more tighter? Jesus Christ, was Buddy right in the pocket of the beat or what?

  • Buddy did not have to bother with setting up his drums & if there is enough space above the crown of the cymbal to the swivel top then you don't need a felt washer on top.simple & straight forward

  • Does anyone know why he did not use felt on top of his cymbals ?. Did it make any difference to his sound?

  • Maybe you mean Swivel tops instead of wing nuts.but there would have been felt washers under to support the cymbal.I used these as they were much quicker to mount & unmount cymbals from the stand

  • Does Buddy Rich not use felt on the top of his cymbals. I have noticed this on a number of his clips.

  • He never did to my knowledge...and I've followed his entire career.

  • No one, absolutely no one, could propel a big band the way Buddy Rich could. His left hand was astonishing - any drummer worth his salt drops his jaw at everything Buddy did.

  • wow... thanks for pointing that out

  • yeah if Buddy didnt get a puff of cheeba he was a bear

  • Godly. it's a shame buddy flew off the handle with his band...

  • I can't get over the effortless precision and technique

  • Boy do they sound sharp. Buddy is on it. As always.

  • utterly amazing!

  • Little Train -- One of the best charts in Buddy's book ~

  • Yay! Great music! Buddy rich rules!

  • Killer Diller !

  • Oh My God. Great video. Good quality and good tunes. BUDDY FOREVER.

  • First soloist is Andy Fusco on alto sax.
