Deberías hacer un cortometraje. You should make a short movie with this, a battle angels against negative forces conquering our world, light forces win!. :>
@donnellyno Not from anywhere. They were just tests for the micropoly displacement in vray when it was a new feature, as they turned out ok I just made a couple of scenes with them.
this is very impressive, although I would def render at a higher resolution, or upload the hi-res if you have it. 360 doesn't do what you've done enough justice
@fryjs Ah, got it. I have to say that this scene is very nice, most notably your direction--the slow reveal of the big ship followed by the build up of the fighters and finally the mass of ships. It takes a lot of confidence as a director to go with a shot like that. Timed to music beautifully. Definitely one of the most legitimately cinematic scenes I've seen on here.
PS - you have some light/shadow flickering on the hero ship as it traverses camera...are you using final gather in renders?
@fryjs Question: I'm doing more advanced renders (for commercials, mostly) and I'm getting FG flickering like the one in your scene--how did you get rid of it? Is it a product of the renderer? Subtle, but very annoying, especially when you're being paid and the client has certain expectations...
@dbrasco2069 The flickering in my render isn't actually the fg, it's not having the sampling for the raytraced shadows high enough for the displacement. If your scene is static (as in no moving objects) you can simply bake the fg solution to avoid any changes in calculation as the camera moves around
Do you think you could render a battle (say mini movie) using the software you did for this? That would be totally awsome, even if you didn't get close shots.
@ducktopia301 not that much, everything was rendered in separate layers: the stars, the planet, the far ships, the close ship, the fighters. Motion blur, flaring and other postfx were done in after effects
i would have to say this is the stargate universe, there is a couple of ships in distance that closely resemble the daedalus x-304 class, and some even look like concept ships from the series,
no info, no description, no nothing. artists usualy talk about their work they give credits and stuff like that. unless offcourse if this is a teaser about a secret project or something.
Truly amazing, may I ask what 3d software you used for this? And what did you use for compositing? Also, how long did it take to create that big ship, with all the greebling on it?
Made with 3dsmax, and rendered with v-ray. Composited in after effects.
The ship, is actually really simple, a low-poly box model. The trick is a panel displacement map, using micropoly displacement. All up, the ship only took a couple of hours to get to that stage.
Long live 3dsmax and v-ray, I use it a lot as well :p. Now that I know you did this in 3dsmax, may I ask how you did the atmosphere for the earth? Is it just a background image or did you use some sort of volumetrics to get that look?
The earth is actually 3d (a small portion of a very large sphere), with the shader being a falloff mix between the biggest Nasa blue-marble map and a light blue color (so the sphere lightens towards the light blue color towards the perpendicular edges).
Then the atmosphere is simply a glow effect that starts out at the some light blue color as the falloff map and progresses to a dark blue.
very well done, impressive looking fleet

Am I correct in assuming you got your inspiration for the ships from Stargate?
They look very familiar to the 304's (Daedalus-class battlecruisers). Almost like a upgraded version!
Good work btw!
