"Two of the few remaining tower blocks in Glasgow are demolished."
whatever happened to journalists that do their research? This city built around 300 multi storey flats, around half of them are being kept. The Herald of all papers should know this, being based in Glasgow.
these buildings just scream socialism to me, like the russian projekts. you have to live so close to other people hearing them throught the fuckin walls AAAAARGH. scotland is a big country in respect to its population size theres no need for this kind of housing
ones in germiston, toryglen, dalmarnock, mitchellhill castlemilk, 2 in sighthill, 7 in the gorbals and thers still 10 ther, thats all i can think of just now. thers still alot probally right across the city. glasgow has the most tower blocks than anywer in the uk
I am in two minds as to wether these high rise flats should have been demolished..... Did the people who live there like staying there ? ? ... High rise flats in new york are desirable places to live ... .. maybe they should have been sold to a luxury property developer... Marble floors .Ground floor sports centre... supermarket... etc . Doesn't sound crazy to me . If these 'floors' where put on sale to the general public ..... do you think anyone would have put in a bid ..??? ..
Exactly .. they are in a good location aswell. walking distance to the city centre and not too far from the business district. The Gorbals is not even that bad of an area anymore with all the redevelopment they have done, alot of it is private owned housing now. Just need to wait and see what they build to replace them. I hope its something tall! Glasgow for one of the UK's biggest cities really lacks height around the city centre.
Why should a city have tall buildings? They just succeed in making places like London and Birmingham feel cramped and claustrophobic. I can't imagine its very nice to live in a tower block either. All boxed in.
Well its just opinion. Some people like tall buildings and sky scrapers - some people dont.I like them and would like to see some around the city centre
I just think that the majority of these tower blocks around Glasgow that sprung up in the 60's and 70's were poorly built and cost alot of money to maintain. It would probably be cheaper in the long run to just demolish them and replace them with something more modern and desirable.

But its really only the cities that are vastly populated, no?
600,000 people in a city the size of Glasgow, that kind of accommodation is nigh-on essential.
rileyhend 2 years ago
new-towns. they built tower blocks because it was cheap moron. not essential
themanbearpig 2 years ago
Cheap and essential go hand in hand with regards to Glasgow. Can't imagine £250k penthouses being of much use to a joe-average punter.
Moron.

You may thick of moving to Trellick or Balfron Tower in London, as they have been "listed" and will stand as they are eternally.
