I figured this type of stuff out on my own but you can really learn a lot about humans from animals. In fact I've learned more about humans thru studying animals than looking at humans themselves. The alpha male will always get the most females, weaker males really only get the lower self esteemed females or none at all. I mean who wants a loser? If I was a woman I sure as hell wouldn't!
Women prefer to mate with Alpha males but choose to habitat and rear their young with subordinate males.
Alpha males will never stay around since they are busy spreading their seed. Subordinate males will work and pay the bills to rear other males children.
The percentage of women who cheat is very high. I bet if every baby was genetically tested at birth, few would match the males who think the baby is theirs.
Just tell yourself that there's also a sort of tradition in this support. It's almost always the male partner that supports the familly/group. It's not really just about "alpha" or "subordinate" pheromones or whatever, it's simply socially accepted like that.
Let us not forget what sociology teaches us. There is the culture between individual behavior and biology. Culture defines what is considered better and individuals think what they are thought in socialization. No individual is above others in biology.
We also shouldn't forget what adaptation does to us. In biology, how well you adapt to the enviroment determines how well your lineage survives. No Individual being superior to others biologically only exists where there are worlds that complement every single change in DNA. Since we only live in one world, say a Lance Armstrong, with his biological mutation of a large heart and his use of all his heart muscle, is biologically superior to many of us.
Now you can argue, "The ability to run, or bike quickly, is a cultural aspiration, not a biological one." That isn't true, in early human evolutions, running fast allows you to escape from predators, the "big cats" for example and allows you to catch prey quicker rabbits for instance. Biologically every creature on earth lives in order to survive and reproduce. These aren't cultural phenomenons.
Maybe a better form would be "No individual is above others in culture". Biology does not justify cultural differences, in which also reproduction, sports and wealth belong. Individuals can achieve excellent physical condition with exercise. It is up to culture to define who will exercise, not up to biology. This is a fact.

Being an "alpha" male in today's world seems to lie in a person's ability to earn money.
Many surveys show that most women expect to be supported by their male partner. It's true of all age groups.
Being a male with money, means you increase the pool of potential mates to pick from.
Look at Rupert Murdoch. Would he be with his current wife if he was earning say $50,000 a year. Highly unlikely.
Most women realise, they're not going to land a Rupert, so take what's available and make excuses.
