CBS should have used this theme for there college basketball game. i like the old sports theme more then the new ones because they mean something to get into the game. Also that year UNC won the Final four with Michael Jordan
I think about PHI SLAMA JAMA and the Cardiac PACK, Memphis, Louisville, No shot clock no 3's and those nutcrackers disduised as shorts. PURE BASKETBALL!
The visuals in those days were shots from the arena the game was at. The black was matted out and replaced with arena shots and pertinent graphics (location, team names, etc.)
@Speed8178, no way. I've been reading comment boards regarding OSM all of the past two months, and if it were removed, a LOT of NCAA basketball fans would be upset. None of them like the current Jennifer Hudson version though (versus the Luther Vandross version).
@jaytf123 I love OSM! I know a lot of people who were at games and stayed just to watch it. The only thing I don't like is when they get new singers in there and they do there own rendition of it which usually stinks.
This is the best college basketball theme ever, they should have always kept this one and never changed, you knew it was tourney time every time this tune played, fantastic memories this theme brought me
CBS did a brilliant job for the theme to "NCAA Basketball" from 1982 until 1986. A Fantastic 5. They would have been smart to keep that theme until 1996.
While I do prefer CBS' '90s-'00's NCAA opening theme music, I just barely remember this version, and think it's quite great - little more complex. And I never gave thought to how long that CBS Sports' NCAA logo lasted - don't they still occasionally use it?
Agreed. This is a great intro. The music is terrific. Now we get intro's with people flying out of exploding buildings. These were simple and clean. I know I am nostalgic but the old CBS NCAA intro's were much better!
This sounds like it was composed by Van McCoy. (If you get that joke you are as old as I am).

@vraydio That's the producer/composer that did "Do the Hustle," right? Had to refresh my memory via Google, but yeah LOL (Born in 1988)

this always brings back memories of when James Madison went to the tourney's second round 3 years in a row, 1981-83

This is one of my favorite theme songs for CBB. Back in the day, Raycom Sports also had excellent intro/theme for basketball coverage.

Question How can this be 82. If the opening sequence is from the 83 final four in new Mexico?
pawtdtmd 3 years ago
CBS started using this theme song when they first began airing the NCAA Tournament back in 1982.
wizeman5974 3 years ago
would like to see visuals from that first year, must have been different.

what was the first visual like?

I like the current theme song. Just get rid of "One Shining Moment" at the end. It's so self serving for CBS.

I'll agree with the removal of "OSM"
Something about it just screams "mid-80's sports movie montage"

the 87-92 is best, than this, than older new. The revamped new version of last three years sucks
pawtdtmd 3 years ago 2
Yes, it doesn't seem that long when they add the live video to it.
johnnyjohnson 3 years ago
@Chasmodon Not as I know. Today's coverage exclusively uses today's logo.

Great memories from this tune. Probably a better tune than they curently use, but I'm used to the new one now.

I agree. I also like the open they had in the early 90's too.

100% on point jlr0912. Sports on tv is now just entertainment not for the sports fan only anymore.
