@ blackhatch Yes, it was the rifle barrel. It was the wrong size barrel. The projectile would hit the target sideways. 1.5 MOA at what range? Depends on what you want out of your rifle. I'm shooting the M855 green tip factory load out of my 24" AR at 550yards. 5 shot group at 8". Shooting a 2 ft square gong all day long at 550yards. 5" round gong 1 in 5 shots ring the gong. All with factory ammo. This would be near impossible with consistency with the 5.45x39 in the current AK configuration.
I have been looking at the 12. Any idea if Kalashnikov designed it? I kinda feel for the old guy. He has a fascinating life history & designed one of the most significant guns in the history of the world & he got minimal benefit from it. He is making some money from his vodka but I would like to see him get some significant financial benefit for his designs. My college roomy was Russian & her mom was a weapons designer. She has met him on several occasions & has photos of them eating together
lol It did a number on that roast. You should have weighed it before & after. I have been shooting for 35+ yrs & it still amazes me how much damage a little round will do if it's going fast enough. In the description I see you went to the AR. Good decision. I did that yrs ago & never looked back. Still have an AK just because they are a historic weapon & they are fun to shoot.(gotta give them that) Just got to the level where an AK couldn't meet my needs anymore. Neat vid. Thx for posting.
I really liked the rifle but maybe it had the wrong barrel. I shot every type of ammo available except the Hornady. It was a century built Ak-74 from Centerfire systems. Bought for $379 sold it for $450 and built an AR-15. I have since built 3 ARs. For the same if not less money than a "high quality AK". The 5.45 is a neat/ wicked little round, it's just not for me. If it shot straight, I would still own it.
@pg6922 century are notorious for having bad quality... seems like its hit or miss, some are great, then some have bullets coming out of the barrel sideways. I can hit golf balls at 150 yards with mine.
@pg6922 it shoots straight, you must of had a shitty rifle. that or user error. mine holds at least 1.5 moa. minute of man is all that matters anyway.
@TomCat686 They are both devastating rounds. Problem with the 5.45 is hitting the target to see the damage. The 5.56 is far more accurate & has more variants for specific uses.
@TomCat686 Its more like all the cheap/poor people who cant afford real top tier Ar 15s and buy the all around cheap Ak and against all logic try and defend it as a quality guns when really it sucks there are so many quality assault rifles and its truly on the bottom of the list sure its reliable but thats its only redeeming trait and all quality AR 15s are very reliable
Why do they say AKs are made with low quality steel.. isn't steel one of russias most exported items.? So everyone in the world just wants low quality metal..
The earlier Century Tantals have the keyhole problem, but supposedly they corrected it with the latter ones. I have a High Standard / Interarms Tantal, and have no problems, although you're $250.00 richer than me.
Have a Century Tantal no problems don't listen to all the crap about keyhole! Only the first ones built key holed due to the twist rate. Oh and good way to tenderize the meat just don't let it hit the ground next time.
Get a Russian one, a Saiga! Don't use Century's crap. Saiga's are allot tighter and more accurate. Not quite the AR but good enough and better than almost anything I've seen built by CAI.
It was century built and was not chrome lined. The ammo it liked the best was the wolf military classic. All the hollow points I shot would keyhole or yaw in flight. Leaving not a perfectly round hole but more of a tear. The rifle was very inconsistent and very frustrating to sight in. If your less than 50 yards you could probably hit a man size target. Maybe a better made version would do better. Just not the rifle for me.
If you come across the money you should try investing in a better built 74. Arsenal/SAIGA being the best commercial available, followed in short order by the Interarms guys. Both excellent built rifles. Century occasional builds an okay rifle --- but it's a crap shoot most of the time.
@TeamRmageddonNetwork stating that century rifles are almost always crap isnt exactly a stretch genius. the man said his 74 wasn't accurate, so i suggested buying a better 74. mind your own business moron.
it sounds like you got one of the century ak74 clones with the wrong barrels. some were shipped out with .223 barrels instead of the proper .220 barrels. it caused keyhole'ing with most ammunition.
@copilot7777 Wow, You are clueless. The average AR is worlds better quality than the average AK. That's not even addressing the design. There is drastic differences in material quality & machining quality. You do realize the AK is intended to arm as many as possible as cheaply as possible. A Mercedes & a Yugo are made out of basically the same materials too but the quality of the materials & the design make all the diff. Good luck with your Yugos.
@shananagans5 steel will outlast aluminum. even if you machine aluminum... guess what? its a soft metal. i guarantee my ak will outlast your ar15. your ar is a civilian gun, made by a company that knows your gun will just shoot expensive ammo at a sterile range. surplus guns are tougher. my gfs s&w failed after 200 rounds. my makarov hasnt yet.
and btw, if you use cheap steel, an ak receiver warps and wont function. so unless its a wasr. its good materials. your just ignorant.
@yourredcomrade717 Kinda sounds like you bought a wasr & are trying to convince yourself it's the best thing going. Well, surprise, there are lots of guns out there that are better than an AK. I can't think of many things more fun to shoot than an AK, gotta admit they are fun to plink with. They are also cheap with cheap ammo but wouldn't count on one making a good 3 or 400 yard shot.
@yourredcomrade717 It would be pretty stupid to give an African tribe with no resources an AR. They simply couldn't maintain it. At the same time, it would be stupid to give AKs to highly trained troops with the resources to maintain a more sophisticated weapon.
Aside from Russia, how many wealthy nations use the AK? Like I said, it's a good design. I have some high end AKs but they are just not capable of what, even a mid range AR is capable of. They really are diff guns for diff purposes.
@shananagans5 if your going to say "only poor stupid people use aks" thats not a valid reason. its ignorant cold war thinking. a very high degree of accuracy is not required in urban combat. you wont see the enemy at 500 yards. making your accuracy a moot point.
and my 100 dollar mosin will be more lethal than your ar at further ranges. and its one tenth the cost.
@yourredcomrade717 Olympic Arms. lol You can't buy the cheapest thing out there & judge a design based on that. I have had several AKs & several ARs over the yrs & there is just no comparison. The only real advantage an AK has is loose tolerances allowing it to run longer without cleaning. A bit of maintenance is more than worth the accuracy you get out of a quality AR. Aluminium wearing out? lol You will shoot the barrel out first.
@shananagans5 i dont think that a gun thats picky with ammo, picky with mags, and prone to jamming if its dry, very cold, or covered in mud, sand, or dust counts as a "bit of maintenance"
a good ak build will be accurate enough to hit a man at 350 meters. use any mags you want, use any ammo you want. and cost half as much as an ar15.
what good is shooting tiny groups if your gun doesnt shoot in shitty conditions? reliability saves more lives. and ak74 has both.
@yourredcomrade717 Funny how all the complaints about reliability are 40 yrs old. Yea, it can't run as dirty as an AK but rumors of reliability problems are greatly exaggerated. You really think the US military would put up with a problematic rifle for 40+ yrs? There is a reason there has been no serious contender to replace the Stoner design. It's reliable, light, easy to add accessories & as accurate as many bolt guns. I am willing to clean it more often to have a superior weapon.
@shananagans5 kalashnikov designed his gun from his actual field experience. stoner was an aircraft bunny. kalashnikov was a tank sargent. stoner made money, mikail did not.
considering all the money invested in an m16, yes i would believe the united states would issue a faulty gun. look at the state of economy and politics. ar is more reliable than credit is given, but you forget ak is alot more accurate than given credit.
@yourredcomrade717 And the 300yd vid shows what? Shooter skill? Both of those rifles are capable of better than he did. A good 74 should shoot a 9" group or so, removing operator error. An average quality AR should be capable of 3" groups. When you are shooting at heads popping up from behind rocks that's a huge diff. Not to mention the ease of putting an optic on an AR. A good optic & hitting a head sized target at 300 or even 400 yards isn't anything to brag about.
@shananagans5 funny, because spetsnaz, vdv, polish special forces all used ak74 and had no trouble shooting people in the head. polish troops right now have confirmed headshots at 400 yards with beryl rifles.
and you can easily mount optics. get a 25 dollar side rail adapter. or i can get ak scope which has built in range finder! the side rail is superior because russian optics retain zero if you remove them. and besides, most of that tacticool crap you dont need anyways.
@shananagans5 yea, youll get 3 inch groups at 300 yards only with high quality ammo and optics on a bench. you will get slightly more consistency with an ar but its not enough to make a difference. especially with iron sights with surplus ammo. i have found the biggest things that make an ak less accurate are
gun not zeroed.
short sight radius combined with a fat fsp.
poor quality builds (wasr mainly)
operator error.
all of which can be corrected instead of saying "fuck it ill get m16"
@yourredcomrade717 And yea, I know you can mount an optic on an AK but seriously, have you ever seen one that actually works well? The 74s are generally more accurate than the 47s but they are still lacking. Military issues aside, Pure fun factor here. If you want to just go out in the desert & challenge yourself with some long range shots, whats more fun? Watching a 2 liter bottle blow up 3 out of 4 times at 300 or 350 yards or just lobbing some in there hoping you get lucky & wing one?
@shananagans5 i wouldnt know. i dont buy cheap civilian scope mounts, i buy russian issue gear. and its ten times better what you can buy here. and i never had an issue hitting anything i wanted to with my ak. then again i bought a good one and took the time to practice with it and properly zero it.
like i said, talk to polish soldiers in afghanistan, they have no issue hitting anything with their aks. and russia has a new gun called ak-12 which solves all issues mounting optics.
@yourredcomrade717 That 12 looks sweet. Any idea if we will be able to get it here? Well, I know we cant get a real one here. Maybe I should say, any Idea if we can get a bastardized version of it here? I haven't seen any optic mount for an AK that really works & that will hold zero for more than an afternoon. They just were not designed to take an optic & any mount is an afterthought that's marginal at best.
@shananagans5 ak side rail system is what they are used to using my friend. its older than the rails we use today. and in some ways its better. only my airsoft guns have a side rail unfortunately. but the side rail clamp system keeps the scope zeroed between uses so you dont have to resight it in when you reinstall it. i like kobra red dots and pso scopes. russia invented the bullet drop compensator on optics we use today. it was invented for svd.
@yourredcomrade717 lol No offence but you have to be young talking about buying real Russian gear. lol I was shooting AKs when you could just go down & buy a new,100% Russian made milled AK for $500. I assume Russian made accessories. After the import restrictions AKs got really bad. Just one of several reasons I went to ARs. I understand they are getting better now but, when I think AK, I think what is now considered cream of the crop. I shudder at the thought of a current average quality AK
@yourredcomrade717 Reliability saves more lives? How come the small arms kill ratios are so lopsided now & in Vietnam? The AK is a fine weapon but it just is not as refined & if you have the ability to maintain a more sophisticated weapon, it's in your best interest to do so. No doubt, I would take an AK in a position where it couldn't be maintained but they are outclassed by the AR if you have the ability to maintain it. The forces that choose the AK vs the AR reflect the strengths of each gun
@shananagans5 also, you should know, that since the army depends more on aircraft, tanks and drones these days than troops its not a big deal to have jams or a crappy gun. because the soldier isnt as vital.
america hasnt won a war cept grenada since its adoption.
i work in the repair trade. the more complex shit its, the more shit breaks. and when my lifes on the line im not going to trust mine to a range gun. i want a gun that will not break.
That bullet makes sausage from your pork shoulder roast. Would not want to be shot by one of those rounds. Not that i would want to be shot in the first place. Who'ee'
@Malbrojia They arent traditional hollow points. Theres a pocket of air inside the tip of the bullet to increase the chance of yawing. They dont fragment.
@Ihasacellular i have a few cases of those mil surp with the steel knocker your talking about. Im pretty sure the round in the video is a 60gr HP, and my comment eariler was just to let dude know it was hague not geneva that dealt w/ HP and maiming rounds. Thanks.
The 74 is a fun rifle to shoot with cheap ammo. But, if you are into tight groups at 100yds, forget about it. The hollow point wolf ammo keyholes a paper target every time. Wolf Military Classic is by far the most accurate. Ball ammo does not keyhole. After trying to dial in the 74 with a scope, I figured out that this rifle was just not for me and sold it. If you sight it in, start at 25 yards and move out from there. Good luck.
@pg6922 Dude, an ak74 could engage up to 500+yards, and its dead accurate, maybe you got a shitty one or maybe the brand you chose just sucks. Get a sgl 31, you will see the difference. And remember, these rifles available to us are only civilian ones, so they are downgraded versions, but obviously you already know that, just try another brand.
@pg6922 Word on the streets is that the Century Tantal AK-74s had the keyholing problems due to an oversized bore. AK-74s are NOT supposed to keyhole, nor is it even common with quality builds.
That being said, I enjoyed your video. There needs to be more 5.45 vs meat videos out there.
@pg6922 I have to disagree. Not trying to get into a flame war but my 100 yard groups are on par with my m4 style AR. Now at about 200-250 it starts to open just a tad. If you shoot the surplus ammo with will get the best grouping imo because that shit shoots really hot and straight.
The new production Wolf is a good "wounder." The Russians seem to inadvertantly have created a more devestating round with the comercial Wolf-60gr in comparison to the 7n6 Surplus rounds.
VERY good test dude. I'm reading up on this rouond now. Good to see people testing it out on real objects. Keep it up. How about a car door or some sheetrock/studs??? I want to see what these rounds can do!
I've heard that the WOLF hollow points don't have as much expansion as normal HP's, just due to their design. I do wonder what the air pocket + steel knocker would do to a pork shoulder like that. Cool video man.
@ blackhatch Yes, it was the rifle barrel. It was the wrong size barrel. The projectile would hit the target sideways. 1.5 MOA at what range? Depends on what you want out of your rifle. Ok look I am a 51 year old professional Alaskan guide and custom gun shop owner that builds ARs and bolt guns from my shop in Oregon state.
These two guns are the farthest apart for each other, the AR is alloy aluminum, steel, composites built with modern technologies,
The Ak is old school metal and wood built with primitive machinery and low quality craftsmen ship.
The steel used to make all AKs lowest of quality !

short sight radius combined with a fat fsp.
poor quality builds (wasr mainly)
operator error.
all of which can be corrected instead of saying "fuck it ill get m16"
yourredcomrade717 1 month ago
@yourredcomrade717 And yea, I know you can mount an optic on an AK but seriously, have you ever seen one that actually works well? The 74s are generally more accurate than the 47s but they are still lacking. Military issues aside, Pure fun factor here. If you want to just go out in the desert & challenge yourself with some long range shots, whats more fun? Watching a 2 liter bottle blow up 3 out of 4 times at 300 or 350 yards or just lobbing some in there hoping you get lucky & wing one?
shananagans5 1 month ago
@shananagans5 i wouldnt know. i dont buy cheap civilian scope mounts, i buy russian issue gear. and its ten times better what you can buy here. and i never had an issue hitting anything i wanted to with my ak. then again i bought a good one and took the time to practice with it and properly zero it.
like i said, talk to polish soldiers in afghanistan, they have no issue hitting anything with their aks. and russia has a new gun called ak-12 which solves all issues mounting optics.
yourredcomrade717 1 month ago
@yourredcomrade717 That 12 looks sweet. Any idea if we will be able to get it here? Well, I know we cant get a real one here. Maybe I should say, any Idea if we can get a bastardized version of it here? I haven't seen any optic mount for an AK that really works & that will hold zero for more than an afternoon. They just were not designed to take an optic & any mount is an afterthought that's marginal at best.

@shananagans5 ak side rail system is what they are used to using my friend. its older than the rails we use today. and in some ways its better. only my airsoft guns have a side rail unfortunately. but the side rail clamp system keeps the scope zeroed between uses so you dont have to resight it in when you reinstall it. i like kobra red dots and pso scopes. russia invented the bullet drop compensator on optics we use today. it was invented for svd.
yourredcomrade717 1 month ago
@yourredcomrade717 lol No offence but you have to be young talking about buying real Russian gear. lol I was shooting AKs when you could just go down & buy a new,100% Russian made milled AK for $500. I assume Russian made accessories. After the import restrictions AKs got really bad. Just one of several reasons I went to ARs. I understand they are getting better now but, when I think AK, I think what is now considered cream of the crop. I shudder at the thought of a current average quality AK
shananagans5 1 month ago
@yourredcomrade717 Reliability saves more lives? How come the small arms kill ratios are so lopsided now & in Vietnam? The AK is a fine weapon but it just is not as refined & if you have the ability to maintain a more sophisticated weapon, it's in your best interest to do so. No doubt, I would take an AK in a position where it couldn't be maintained but they are outclassed by the AR if you have the ability to maintain it. The forces that choose the AK vs the AR reflect the strengths of each gun
shananagans5 1 month ago
@shananagans5 when you shoot more civilians than soldiers, you get lopsided kill ratios.
yourredcomrade717 1 month ago
@shananagans5 also, you should know, that since the army depends more on aircraft, tanks and drones these days than troops its not a big deal to have jams or a crappy gun. because the soldier isnt as vital.
america hasnt won a war cept grenada since its adoption.
i work in the repair trade. the more complex shit its, the more shit breaks. and when my lifes on the line im not going to trust mine to a range gun. i want a gun that will not break.

@pg6922 Century put a 5.56 barrel in them. That's why the bullets yawed. Lot of discussion in gun boards about this.

is that from century arms? does it come with a chrome lined barrel? and does it keyhole and how would i check to see if it keyholes?

That bullet makes sausage from your pork shoulder roast. Would not want to be shot by one of those rounds. Not that i would want to be shot in the first place. Who'ee'

I don't wish that on anyone. should be against Geneva convention.
vicnetto 1 year ago
@vicnetto Hollow point rounds are a violation of the Hague convention from 1899 and unused by NATO military.
Malbrojia 1 year ago
@Malbrojia So basically, the moral to the story is... Don't go to war with Russia?
vicnetto 1 year ago
@Malbrojia They arent traditional hollow points. Theres a pocket of air inside the tip of the bullet to increase the chance of yawing. They dont fragment.
Ihasacellular 1 year ago
@Ihasacellular i have a few cases of those mil surp with the steel knocker your talking about. Im pretty sure the round in the video is a 60gr HP, and my comment eariler was just to let dude know it was hague not geneva that dealt w/ HP and maiming rounds. Thanks.

I was wondering what that ammo was like since I am most likely getting an AK-74 next week...now I know.
NESurvivalPrep 1 year ago
The 74 is a fun rifle to shoot with cheap ammo. But, if you are into tight groups at 100yds, forget about it. The hollow point wolf ammo keyholes a paper target every time. Wolf Military Classic is by far the most accurate. Ball ammo does not keyhole. After trying to dial in the 74 with a scope, I figured out that this rifle was just not for me and sold it. If you sight it in, start at 25 yards and move out from there. Good luck.
pg6922 1 year ago
@pg6922 do you have a polish tantial?
jason127x99 1 year ago
@pg6922
Keyholing is your rifle mainly. What are you shooting, one of the Century rifles?
Corbikins 10 months ago
@pg6922 Dude, an ak74 could engage up to 500+yards, and its dead accurate, maybe you got a shitty one or maybe the brand you chose just sucks. Get a sgl 31, you will see the difference. And remember, these rifles available to us are only civilian ones, so they are downgraded versions, but obviously you already know that, just try another brand.
timothychong48 6 months ago
@pg6922 Word on the streets is that the Century Tantal AK-74s had the keyholing problems due to an oversized bore. AK-74s are NOT supposed to keyhole, nor is it even common with quality builds.
That being said, I enjoyed your video. There needs to be more 5.45 vs meat videos out there.
Jpach80740 1 month ago

Cool video man.
whitezeppelin 1 year ago
You used a hollowpoint!!! Use a FMJ so we can see realistic combat damage!

Where did the shot come from? Left, right or from camera's POV? Thanks!

The camera was on a tripod and the shot came from the left and exiting the right.
