We do it because comparing and contrasting ideas in arguments is how you test whether the ideas are good or not. Organized religion, on the other hand, does not brook argument within its ranks. It DOES insist that everyone think the same way. Atheists argue with each other and with other people because we have opinions and intend to express them and fight for them.
