I can't hear even one measure of the requiem without being totally ensnared. This is the most powerful piece of music ever composed, nothing comes even close. Beyond the overloud Verdi, above the subtle Faure, it has no equivalent whatsoever.
@pchantreau Of course I do not feel so strongly about this particular piece but I am just curious do you feel the same about the parts which were finished by his student or only the parts written by Mozart himself?
@truvianni It is unclear how much was truly created by Sussmayr. Most likely not so much. Some questioned Constanze's account of Mozart leaving notes and instructions on scraps of paper but he was notorious for doing so and composed a sizeable part of Don Giovanni this way during the trip to Prague. I agree that something changes in the Requiem at some point. Sussmayr did a good job in the circumstances and he had plenty of material to remain faithful to Mozart's intentions if not his form.
@pchantreau glad to meet somebody who knows so much Susmayr actually wrote the recitatives in Mozart's La Clemencia Di Tito yet about Requiem he claimed that Sanctus and Agnus were entirely his of course there are things which will never be known to 100% yet most say that Lacrimosa was the last thing Mozart wrote.BTW I wrote a book about opera if you wish to see it please google "Truvianni,New York's Opera Society".
I am by no means an expert. Some say that Constanze overplayed how much Mozart actually left, to boost the "authenticity" of the Requiem and its value. The consensus seems to be that Sussmayr wrote the Sanctus and Agnus and "recycled" the Lacrimosa. If Mozart really did leave scraps of paper they likely were cryptic for anyone but him, but Sussmayr had direct contact with him and would have known what he wanted. We'll never know. The piece is a wonder.
@pchantreau Actually, I've seen the originals (or at least transcriptions of the Autograph copy as close to accurate as possible). Mozart had written, I'd say a good half of the Requiem before he died. He had sketched a very large portion after the Confutatis, and we know that the only reason there isn't a large 'Amen' section to go after the Sanctus is because Sussmayer was too inept at fugal writing to finish it. Believe me, Sussmayer actually did QUITE a good job- his is as good as we can get
@SuperPaintings Well to be fair he did piss most of it away. It was terrible what happened to him but it's not like he's undeserving of his share of the blame.
@aurosne I wish you were less stupid than you are and turned around you and seen that there actually ARE people around you who are worthy of your help. Mozart's contemporaries probably thought "why couldn't I travel back in time to help Bach"? it's easy to know whom to help when history has given its judgment. Only great spirits are able to recognize greatness in some of their contemporaries, others bow down to the heroes of the pas, like true cattle.
@ididete As much as I agree with some of your sentiments, I disagree with the last statement. In fact, it gave me a little chuckle. That's more or less your perception and manner of thinking. It is nothing more than that. A simple musing produced from a simple mind. That statement holds no truth to us, even though they made hold water in your head. More or less, it is your opinion, not a universal statement, as you attempt to present as such.
@Eamesam In the opera it's Papageno, played by Emanuel Schikaneder (i.e. the librettist and Mozart's friend that we see alot of in the movie), played by Simon Callow and sung by Brian Kay.
this part implies that it was Mozart's mother-in-law whose voice inspired the voice of "Queen Of The NIght" but the truth was that it was his sister-in-law who is not in this film.
@Lindseylovesearth it doesnt matter, singing or speaking.. there is no difference phsicaly. every voice is kind of sound and every sound even fart has a frequence in hertz and mozarts ear sould had worked like an frequence analiser...
there are aproximatly five hertz in music between two notes likte note A and not B
@muhammedmuhiddin actually it is funny that you should mention that because the man under the mask is not Salieri but one of his servants. Many people think and so did I till I heard the the comments made by Forman (the director) who said that it was not Salieri himself but one of his servants.
I like how the film drastically changes. You start off rooting for Salieri, feeling sorry for him and hating Mozart. But then as Salieri begins sabotaging Mozart's career, you start feeling sorry for Mozart. At least, that's how I feel. But anyway, I think it says that there are no real villains in this nor are there any good people.
@skyfinish nah not necessarily, i mean. It may be that the director shot that scene on purpose, to point out that the show was set in a very poor playhouse
@skyfinish I think they were supposed to be there... first of all: they are wearing stage clothes. And second: I think the purpose it to emphasize that The Magic Flute was for "everyone", a contrast to the previous productions for "the snobby court".
I enjoy this music only in this movie. It lacks the punch and power in the absence of this movie. I've listened to these pieces of music in their entirety in the absence of this film and it just doesn't do it for me. That's why I watch this movie over and over again.
the second aria of Queen of the Night from Der Holle Rache is the best of the best. Wow, what a SET!!!!! Now, if we could get Diana Damrau to sing the part -
i fell in love with Mozart when i heard the piano concerto #22, third movement - i wish i could hear that outside live with an orchestra on a spring day.
@EmpireStudios Actually, that's the Queen of the Night's second aria "Der Holle Rache"; the first aria is almost just as hard to sing even for a soprano. I wish they hadn't translated the liberetto though. It loses its traditional value.
@marianmus Yeah, it's downright hypocritical. In the making of for the movie they bloated that they didn't want to change a single note of Mozart's music, but translating the german operas into english while keeping the italian ones in their original language is totally ok, apparently. It's all the more contradicting if you consider their attempt to make a german patriot out of Mozart, opposing italian hegemony. Well, it seems german is only good for nazis in american movies...
@RussiaRulesGermany Er, wouldn't it be a little jarring when the spoken dialogue in the movie clearly substitutes English for German to have the German-language operas in German? It's a theatrical/cinematic device - not an attempt at authenticity.
@obiwanobiwan13 .......... ain't it the truth. there are so many genius moments in filmmaking in this. the transition of the mother-in-law ranting to the aria is GENIUS! this is not a play - funny, most the time when they try to convert a play to a film - it still feels like a play. NOT THIS FILM - no way
Can anyone actually believe that 'Total Film' - a british magazine actually blamed Mozart for the "silliness of the story" when he only wrote the music? Schikaneder wrote the libretto !
Haha, I think it's sooo random how someone can scream their lungs out at Mozart, and at that very moment, he imagines them singing! xD Good one, Mozart, good one! Amazing!
Sad news is that Mozart's surviving two sons never married, never had children. The genius of that blood-line has left humanity. Bad news for our species.
It is possible that people that wary of mozart because of his intelligence and ability to translate life scenarios to music, it is often said that genius also carries eccentricity, mozart probably would have been a good laugh and happy company 2 be with.It is tragic it went so wrong and a genius ended up a pauper.

Frau Weber always confused me ... on the one hand, earlier in the film, she's all like "Marry Wolfgang" when she's with the emperor, then here she's saying she warned her not too ... ? What's going on?
True -- she is very fairweather. She supported him when she sensed a possible connection between Mozart and the aristocracy. Now, during his downturn, she retroactively retracts her position.
He is such amazing man. I feel really bad about his life....Life i s not fair...:(

It's called "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" . It's from the opera The Magic Flute KV.620. It was conducted by Mozart in 1791.
