  • I would like to see you produce zirconium silicate... is it possible to produce larger crystals (used as jewlery)?

  • hey, could you explain to me that when 2 em... salts? (excuse me for the bad english) dont disolve with each other you get an reaction instead? cause its something that ive been really thinking about, why does it react with each other, when they cannot disolve with each other?

  • How do i make sodium salicylate?

  • where were you my junior year ?lol

  • can you show .....

how to make Sodium laureth sulfate

  • I have 1 kg silica gel,but this contains an indicator for humidity, can I use it or it needs to be purified??

  • how would i get the sodium hydroxide

  • Sorry , How to make fluoro Carbon.....?? F-C

  • deepest. voice. ever.

  • Is there any reason i cant get this sodium silicate to form a polymer with ethanol?

I tried the old bouncy ball experiment and I couldn't get it to work. The ethanol and sodium silicate just formed 2 layers.

  • So I looked it up, and bingo! It seems to be right! Cement isn't as simple as CaO + SiO2, the second ingredient is usually more complex, but this does seem to be the basic idea. And Thanks, Nurdrage! You have the best videos on chemistry by far, and we love your sense of what is interesting and important in science!

  • So I put the question away. Then Nurdrage taught me that sand (SiO2) reacts with molten NaOH, and other forms of SiO2 even with aqueous NaOH, as in this video. So, I started thinking, maybe the CaO, which with water becomes Ca(OH)2, reacts with SiO2 in a similar way, making calcium silicate, when cement hardens.

  • This video and the one on dissolving glass with drain cleaner answered an old question I had. The question was: what is the chemistry of cement? I knew cement was a mixture of calcium oxide and something else, like maybe sand. I imagined that the calcium oxide would react with the CO2 in the air to make calcium carbonate, and that would have something to do with the hardening of cement. But cement hardens even under water, so that theory didn't sound right.

  • were do you get the vials?

    please reply. thanks.

  • i was was wondering if you could do this without using sodium hydroxide and use something like bicarbonate of soda (NaCHO3) or something similar. Thanks

  • Ok, so I want to use Sodium Silicate as a concrete sealer, and I'm wondering A) How big of a batch do you think I could make this in? and B) Does it harden over time, or does it stay liquid?

  • What is Silica Gel? Is it SiO2 (silciumdioxide) or...?

  • I made a batch of this using 100ml H2O, 40g NaOH(Red Devil Lye), and 60g of pure Silica crystal cat litter. It worked great. Would it be possible to make a larger volume, say 3 liters in a glass bottle? Mix up the NaOH and water, then add the Silica and leave it set for a few days, stirring every now and then?

I use it for making sand cores in metal castings.

Is there a list of the different Sodium Silicates and what they are used for?

Thanks for the great videos, keep them coming!

  • Can pure quartz sand be used instead of silica gel?

  • Can you show us ...How to make sodium dithionite Na2S2O4 is strong reducing agent...

    Thanx.........

  • Is it possible to make sodium metal out of salt?

  • @joblessalex You would need to reduce the metal ions. You could do this by passing an electrical current under the right circumstances (right solutions, electrodes, etc). You could also get metal by Oxidation-Reduction reactions (eg. you can get silver from a silver nitrate solution by adding a piece of copper wire into the solution).

  • abrakadabra there is no limit. know were the origin chemistry comes from? eye of neut and other things mixed in a cauldron, words do cast spells on those who hear them especially if they have the chemistry of a potion in them .what you eat and drink creates perception,be aware of what you put in your body as it's a great tool.

  • You can use water glass to preserve eggs! Apparently, if you dilute it 1:3 with water and dip eggs in, it will seal up the porous egg shells. It's possible to now store these sealed eggs for up to a year. However, Given the world is going to end sometime next year, you won't have much time to test it out though.

  • to get pure sodium silicate u should mix 8g sodium hidroxide and 6g Silica gel?

can i boil the solution to get a powder of sodium silicate, or it will decompose or som?

  • the silica beads....... if you put them in water they pop and crackel...... whats going on there?

    thnaks man

  • what stops the sodium hydroxide dissolving the vial?

  • @blueduderanch nothing, its just VEEEERY slow in solution, to dissolve glass with NaOH u need to melt NaOH, an then put the glass in the container with the molten NaOH(steel container)

    /watch?v=nmktRTHL1NA

  • @blueduderanch Only Molten Sodium Hydroxide Dissolves Glass.

  • This is a great video and quite informative. Now I know how to make the liquid that can seal a cracked head gasket in a liquid cooled engine. I think it otherwise sells for about $50 per liter.

Would I be able to use reverse osmosis water to make sodium silicate or should I go with distilled? Thank you for the video.

  • @ctscantechnologist i just used tap water :)

For you application probably the cheaper option between distilled and reverse osmosis.

  • i didn't understand, have you said: 40g sodium hydroxide or what?

  • @themert123456 No he said 4 grams of Sodium Hydroxide, but if you looked into the discription "... with 4-8grams of sodium hydroxide"

  • are silica gel beads pure silicon dioxide?

  • bealtifull

  • hi nurdrage i am studying chemistry WHEN I AM IN 2ND GRADE!!!!!1!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and i know everything about biology WHEN I AM IN 2ND GRADE!!!!!1!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @barterer124 it's impossible to know everything about Biology in a human life and please restrain yourself of using caps lock or shift. thanks

  • how many mililiters do you get of sodium silicate?

  • why is it called liquid glass?

  • @AZMALING I think most Silicate salts look like (or is) glass and since it's dissolved in water you could call it "liquid glass"

  • @MrShinigamie oh ok.

  • nurdrage i was wondering if you could use household bleach instead of sodium hydroxide or would it produce something different

  • What are the crystals coming off the copper sulfate?

  • excuse me... can you please add the subtitles on this.. and also keep the good work going!

  • mythbusters had some weekend warriors shooting at a home made explosive. it is made from house hold chems. would you know what they were talking about? they shot it with high powered rifles and it exploded?!? we thought since you were so good at this, you would know for sure what chems they were talking about. Thanks Joseph T fly2000jtb.

  • Since you are dissolving silica/sand into this, I have to ask, what prevents the compound from just dissolving the glassware? Or did you use a plexi-vial instead?

  • @snowtemplar356 I it was plexi-glass, the plastic would bubble and burn.

  • how do you make the sodium silicate solid without making a chemical garden

  • How to have some fun with Silica Gel...

    Put in some Salsa!!!

  • Thank You NurdRage! I just happen to have a lot of ingredient on hand, and want to try something different. Thanks for the info!

  • will 450 mesh silica from a ceramics supplier work

  • how much time does this experiment take??

  • This is a Gud exp but how much time does it take??

  • Comment removed

  • Where can one get solid NaOH from household products?

  • @altosax1st I bought a mid-sized container from ACE Hardware of solid 1mm diameter pellet NaOH used as a drain cleaner. It is pure enough for most of my experiments.

  • The description says you can use drain cleaner as a NaOH source. Do you need 100% lye drain cleaner?

I have draino kitchen crystals and its not 100% lye. Would it work if I picked out the tiny aluminum pieces, added water, then filtered out the non-solute material.

I don't want a blue solution either, so I may have to find something else.

  • @XxVizzinixX The cleaner the NaOH the better. While you can use lower quality stuff the silicate you get will also be of lower quality, so i recommend trying to get high quality NaOH

  • @NurdRage

Thanks, I guess I'll try to find some better NaOH.

  • @XxVizzinixX

Using impure chemicals can be very dangerous; I would not use draino kitchen crystals.

  • @Doyen17 ya think i lied and actually didn't make sodium silicate?

  • Hey Dr. Lithium,

Is the sodium silicate produced by using this method able to be used as a binding agent in foundry work? Are you familiar with Sodium Silicate sand molding techniques?

  • @amorleyroberts hmm,, you may have to experiment with different rations of silica gel to sodium hydroxide, but it should work.

Although i think buying sodium silicate directly might be cheaper for bulk uses.

  • @amorleyroberts I tried it for foundry work and it worked. I used Dri Splendor flower drying silica and Rooto brand 100% lye drain cleaner. The silica had blue moisture indicator in it so the finished product had a blue tint. I mixed it 40%, (4G NaOH to 6G silica. The initial reaction appeared to drop the boiling point of the NaOH, causing it to boil over if you are not expecting it, but it is fine once it gets going. I used a 6% sodium silicate to sand ratio, fine sand works best for cores.

  • I don't get it. Since the reaction is 2NaOH + SiO2 -> Na2SiO3 + H2O, then what was the gas that fizzed vigorously when you added silica gel to the NaOH solution?

  • @ignilc none, its just the water boiling.

  • so this reaction is safe to reproduce without safety vent?

(i mean - besides the fact that we should use NaOH with caution)

  • WHERE DO YOU GET THOSE HAMMER THINGS!!!?!?!? x.x im desperate. I need to pulverize quarts and i have no way smash it. Even steel sheets dont really work very well. IT PUT A HOLE IN MY HAMMER!!! x.x.x.x.x.x

  • doesn't the sodium hydroxide and eventually the silicate eat away at the glass vial

  • NurdRage,

What is the device that you're using to heat stuff called? That torch thingy giving off blue flame I mean.

  • @anuraganimax

I think it's just a normal propane or butane torch, though it might be one designed for chem lab work.

  • @dragonridley I see. Thanks

  • @anuraganimax I think it's a bunsenburner

  • I had an idea of making a wooden computer case and using this on it to prevent it from ever burning incase of short or possible firwe.Does anyone have an opinion on it or advice?Just need some direction.I read online that this was good for fire proofing.

  • i love this channel, thank you nerd rage

  • plees make a vid on

tetramine copper(II)nitrate propperties, crystall water removal.....

  • haha i like that at the end where it grows...

do you think diamond will grow if i put it in there :D?

  • @misko112100 no, because diamond is not a heavy metal salt

  • Can I do the same thing with potassium hydroxide to get potassium silicate? And also use the molten technique?

  • i haven't tried, so i don't see why not.

  • how about using the other technique?

  • You Rock!

  • can I use crushed glass beer and soda bottles?

  • Doesent work with the bouncy ball experiment

  • try changing the stoichiometry, the bouncy ball experiment might require a different ratio..

  • dammit, all i have is calcium hydroxide. oh well

  • llllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllllll

  • where can i find one of those packets ? other than in a jerky packet

  • a hardware store. its used as a dessicant

  • dessicant what is that ?

  • sucks water out of stuff and gets rid of moisture. they put it in jerky bags to keep the jerky from getting soggy. your not supposed to eat it because it would cause extreme dehydration, and basically you'd die.

  • ah thank you

  • Hey Nerd Rage!!! THANKS!!! I love your youtubes!!! Keep posting! I will keep watching!! :)

    Nerds Rock!

  • I agree!!!!

  • that's just plane cool hey if anyone knows why that happens plz comment me

  • is it dangerous to inhale silicon fumes?

  • cooooooool......and i'm not even a nerd

  • Ur a geek!

  • ohhh shut the freak up

  • lozer!!!!!!!

  • 0:33

I thought NaOH chars glass when you heat it up...

  • It does so, but you need molten NaOH.

He just used a solution of NaOH, but it might be, that there were white spots left.

    Sorry for my English ;-)

  • Dear NurdRage,

Whilst exploring with the properties of silica gel, I noticed a strange event that is making me question weather I had pure silica gel.

I poured about 5 grams into a small clean container ((glass jar that had been thoroughly washed)) and added 5ml of 70% C2H5OH. What I witnessed was not expected. The silica gel dissolved into a paste. As I was not sure if this is because of too much C2H5OH, I used a carbon rod to mix the two chemicals. Upon removing the rod, it turned purple. Why

  • I am trying this at the moment...

Found about 40 grams in Beatles Rock Band =D

  • Hey NurdRage! thank you for making this video. I just tried doing this and it worked as I could clearly see that Sodium Silicate was formed. The only problem was that the 4g of NaOH I made separately and used too much water so my end result is whiteish in appearance. Also, some of the silicate dripped down the glass vial i was using and it likes to pop violently in contact with flame.

  • Can we use Sodium Bicarbonate instead of Sodium Hydrixide ?

  • kyknab, if you live in the US it should be easy to find. This is what we used to blow the engines in the cars traded in at the dealers during the cash for clunkers. Just ask a car dealer where they ordered theirs from, and order from that company. The dealers were ordering 50 gallon drums of it, and it was enough to blow about 100 engines.

  • Hey nurdrage!

I was wondering...if silica gel is basically silicon dioxide but with a much higher surfuce area, is it possible to just crush up glass into dust and then dissolve that? (as opposed to using molten sodium hydroxide)

  • @japanesepoptart

you still need the molten sodium hydroxide.

Even then, glass is actually not pure silicon dioxide, it has calcium, sodium and other additives to give it better manufacturing properties. So if you want pure sodium silicate, it's best to go with silica gel.

  • DARN! oh well... thanks anyways!

  • can i use baking soda instead of sodium hydroxide

  • What are the health issues when smoking this? Since it's the main ingredient in fire safe cigarettes. And is there a way to dip my cigs in something to remove this crap, I seen by the patent that more than 1/3 of ur cig per weight is sodium silicate in the tobacco and in the paper. (50% per weight in tobacco, and 40-100% per weight in the paper.) Thanks for the great videos and sources.

  • Thank you for this video.

Also, thanks for the chemistry page.

  • Thank you for making this video this stuff is super hard to find where I live

  • Is Sodium silicate dangerous

  • well im new to chemistry and i dont know if my next question will be considered "stupid" but is it possible to separate urea and amonium chloride? if so how? thank you for your time !

  • @819726

Urea is more soluble in alcohols (but still not very much) than ammonium chloride.

  • There are no stupid questions. Only stupid answers.

  • Could you somehow turn sodium bicarbonate into sodium hydroxide and then use that?

  • Well yes but it is tedious. Heat the baking soda in the oven to form soda ash. About 400 heat should be enough. Take the soda ash (sodium carbonate) and dissolve in 10 times its wieght of water. Next add calcium hydroxide suspended in much water and mechanically stir for four or five hours. Or, search the hardware stores for drain cleaner that is 100% Lye.

  • hi another question for you. Is there a way to chemically convert liquid drain cleaner(NaoH) into solid or crystalized form.

  • boil it in an iron container.

  • can't i use the liquid drain cleaner?

  • solid is faster.

  • Hey NurdRage,

Do you happen to know anything about the chemical make up of the d30 technology goo? I'd love to see how something like that product is made. There's a few product reviews here on youtube but nothing that talks about it's chemical compounds.

  • hi NurdRage

could you give me the chemical equation for this reaction?

    thanks

  • website in video description has the equation.

  • I got my "Golden book" as a young teenager and did the experiments with my Dad. After I showed an aptitude he gave me his "Boy Chemist" (experiments done with his Dad).

Never became a chemist but it gave me the inertia to pursue science in industrial technology and electronics.

Your videos are great and attract inquisative minds of all ages in our modern wasteland of intellectual stimulation.

  • Another great Video! Thanks again!

Persons with an aptitude for chemistry should look for the PDF of "The Boy Chemist- 1924" and "The Golden book of Chemistry- 1965" both are now banned.

Might be something interesting to do while waiting for the next video.

  • Can I use Na2CO3 instead of NaOH?

  • Fellowneds... lolz

  • you should put a video about how to make sodium hydroxide because i tried to make with ashes in salt water and then electrifying it and i when its done i tried putting it in water and adding AL foil and nothing happened and a lot of your videos include Naoh so thats also a good reason to make it

  • The process of making it requires chemicals and equipment even harder to get than sodium hydroxide itself.

The process is also very boring, so we probably won't make it.

What website lied to you that ashes and salt water make NaOH? I gotta see this.

  • 0:30

    I thought NaOH dissolves glass...

  • MOLTEN sodium hydroxide dissolves glass in an hour.

Aqueous sodium hydroxide takes days to weeks

  • nice one! can you pleace make an video about how to make hydrogen peroxide?

you use it in a lot of videoes and i can`t get it.

  • Hydrogen peroxide is pretty difficult to make at home. If you go to a pool store and find something called "Baquacil Oxidizer," that is (I think) 27% H2O2. I'm not sure whether it has other compounds in it or not, and it is pretty expensive, but it is OTC.

  • Nurdrage, I tried to react the manganese dioxide from the lantern batteries with HCl and nothing happened, is there another way to produce MnCl2? just asking...

  • Why did you try to do that? it produces toxic chlorine gas!

  • I was going to use the MnCl2 in a chemical garden. I was aware about the chlorine, so this experiment was done in a safe environment where the Cl2 was to be ventilated away. However, the reaction ether did not happen or proceeded extremely slow. I'll be honest, I'd rather attempt a different method for producing MnCl. Or just nothing at all..

  • raw MnO2 from a battery is highly contaminated with ammonium chloride as well as insoluble carbon, LOTS of it. you need to wash and filter the substance first to remove the soluble ammonium chloride, perform the reaction with hydrochloric acid, and then filter it again to remove the carbon and keep the soluble manganese chloride, then dry and crystallize.

in total, a lot of hassle in my opinion.

  • Alright, thank you Nurdrage!

  • THANK YOU!!!!

  • I know this has nothing to do with this vid but can you make a vid on how to concentrate H2O2? I can't buy it at a higher concentration than 9% -.- ... btw: really cool vid! :)

  • SMart Guy,

  • Very nice they look much like stalagmites

  • helo nurdrage

i was just wondering what uneversity this is in

  • yay i have been linked too!!!!!

nurd rage is grate, he like magic. he can make all kinds of chemicals with just some drane cleaner some glass were and fire.

    :)

  • Please reply:

Why is it called liquid glass?

  • >=] lets kill some bitchiz XD jkjk ^^ i love you all >=]!!

  • awesome stuff!

too bad i dont have the tools and chemicals to make these things :(

  • Oh nice!!

  • So when can we expect you to conquer the world with your army of chemical experiments?

  • its funny as this guy q: he always finds some stuff we finds interesting somehow qx

  • But silica jell is poisonous!

  • so is lye/sodium hydroxide

  • Nice video, and really impressive.

  • Nurd Rage forever!!

  • another informative video!

  • whats the chemical formula of the silica gel?

  • SiO2, i think

  • Jelly. solid? or liquid?

    My mind is blown.

  • It's a compound, the type of which depending on what jelly we are speaking of.

  • Jelly...is probably a solid since it can hold a shape without being in a container.

  • an aqueous solution of sodium silicate is also called "waterglass".

    Nice video, Nurdrage.

  • How is glass a liquid?

If you "supercool" something it will want to suck in heat. (making it back into a liquid)

    So no

    Glass is not a liquid

  • glass IS a liquid, it does flow (slowly) if you look at very old windows in ancient buildings the bottom is very thick and the top is very thin where it has flowed down.

  • if glass is a liquid, why it could break?

  • have you ever had cold corn syrup or similar liquid (not frozen)? if you snap it quick enough it 'breaks'

  • great show

  • I'm glad you finally got this up because on Twitter you said you messed up a few times

  • Time to grow a garden!

  • man ur the best

can u comment me back :P ??????;P come on nurdrage plz just comment back ill be so much happey :D

  • awesome that looks like a better way to make water glass for my geopolymer experiments.

  • very cool.. need to collect some more silica gel

  • Good Stuff

  • Why is it called "Liquid Glass"? Does it solidify to glass?

  • Comment removed

  • why the raiting is undefined?
