....there goes the no-dislike thing (it wasnt me!), I was hoping people wouldn't do the whole dislike-just-because-there-arent-any-dislikes thing.....
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. I lost my baby sister and this song reminds me of her and all the emotions that never go away but get easier to live with.
@StarKnight95 It wasn't an accident. She was a Councillor for people with drug/alcohol issues
She got a call, on the afternoon of her son's 10th birthday party, from one of her cases. She was found a couple of days later in the Swilly, her car had to be lifted out by crane... With Phil standing on watching.
The addict she'd gone to see had, according to Phil (in an interview with Éamon Dunphy on RTÉ 27/09/2009), fixated on her and ended up driving her car, with her still in it, into The Swilly.
@GlasgowCeltic88 i wasnt talking about what happened, i was talking about the dislike on the video, but thanks for telling me about what happened to her, that is just sad :(
One of my sisters died recently. I remembered this song from when I was much younger and decided to look it up. It's the first thing that has allowed me weep since my sister took her life. Thank you for allowing me to find it again.
Sinead O'Connors voice in this beatifully tragic song is almost translucent, like a spirit from beyond, from a world of everlasting light and comfort.
So haunting and gentle. I love his music. It is so emotional and touches me deeply. I have all his music. If you like his music you must get his album. Words & music. "The town I loved so Well" ,"The Old Man". About his father. Also the song Steal Away. That will touch the hearts of those who loved their Home town. My heart goes out to him for his loss..His music is timeless.
Wow, thank you for such a beautiful comment. You're right his music IS timeless and so emotional... If I can just correct you on one tiny matter though... 'The Old Man' was written for Ted Furey; Finbar, Eddie, George and Paul's (R.i.P.) father.
God works in mysterious ways. Perhaps only tragedy can bring out beautiful and touching song like this. Phil, I am so sorry for your loss but thank you for such wonderful music.
Phil, I just received 3 of your cds today. All day I have lisened to them, they are all beautiful, especially the Shores of the Swilly. My heart goes out to you for your terrible loss. I can feel the pain in the music that you play. You are unbelievable. God Bless
*squeals* oh, GC88, i loves it when u put phil's work on utube! i LOVES it, i tell ya's! as i wrote, sad song, but...awesome! wonderful! beautiful! as great of a musician/singer as phil is,
i feel sorry for him. i don't know what it's like to lose a sister (cuz i don't have one lol)
still, though, i didn't know this song was based on a true story. (it IS real, right?) anyway, this "Sinéad O'Connor" person has a great voice. ^_^
Cyd Coulter was drowned in Lough Swilly in 1983 after going to meet one of her patients. I THINK she was a psychologist... (But I maybe wrong).
Thank you for such a lovely comment and thank you for following my work...
Phil is MORE than just a singer/songwriter. He's also a producer, arranger, conductor and a director.
Hard to believe his first 'hit' was the 1967 Eurovision Contest winning song 'Puppet on a String'. Hotly followed, the next year, by 'Congratulations'.
is that so? then he's a much better person than i thought. love his songs. ^_^ but whati never knew is that he sings? i thought he hired others to sing, and he was the songwriter.
This song brings tears to my eyes, this is a majestic piece of music, Sinéad's singing really manage to step back just alittle and work in perfect harmony with the beautiful piano play... I so wish I could play this piece on my piano.
Not quite so sure I know what you mean, but never mind (it's 1.30am & I'm over halfway through a crate of Black Gold...). Glad I could help. Have you checked out my other Phil Coulter videos yet?
You're so right----that Phil knew that Sinead should sing this song.Beyond that,I've heard the story that Sinead did not get back to him for a while,so he called and asked Sinead if she did not like his song. She replied that she loved it so much that she had not been able to get through it without crying. And so it was made---a real gift,to his sister, and yet another gift from Sinead to her friends in the wider world.
went to buncrana years ago with all saints boys guild my grandfather came from buncrana on the swilly still trying to download your great music to CDS thank you and KEEP THE FAITH
This is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard presented beautifully and simply. It doesn't get much better than this. It would seem that the Celts in general and the Irish in particular have a way with sorrow that makes it more beautiful than joy.
I lost a younger sister but no one knowss what/who killed her. The case is still open. It tears a piece of your heart out.
Phil has lost so much but he has gone on with his life and has made beautiful music out of tradgedys. There is more than admiration for Phil.

Even the trolls can't hate on this song, that's saying something. :)

@iPointless It's impossible to dislike this iP... It's so emotional, I defy anyone to dislike such a sad and heartbreaking story...
Thank you for the comment.

@iPointless I CANNOT believe someone dislikes this..... WHAT posesses someone to 'dislike' such a beautiful piece of music???
It saddens me that someone could not like this... By disliking this they're hating the story of the song....
