  • great tut, but i have one problem with this though.. the mesh in this configuration makes it a bit difficult to animate in an anatomically correct way

  • @ealdie24 can you describe what you mean? This video demonstrates an average topoology that should be modified for the animation needs of every individual model. There's no one right topology that will work for every use.

  • @squirc

nevermind that, probably can be solved with better application of the paint weights

  • shit man these tutorials a great! im not even using maya but this is very useful thank you!

  • Would love to know what you think of my head modeling strategy. I have it on my channel and posted it as a response. btw your method looks awesome but unfortunately doesn't work well in blender which is why I came up with my own method. Your tutorial gave me inspiration though.

  • I've always tried to make my faces with a grid-like approach. This was some great insight, and maybe I'll be able to create some not-crap shading after all!

  • Have you ever though about re-making this video in Maya 2012? and please explain how to get to the tools or the hotkey for them. Great tutorial though subbed. :)

  • I just want to say that this modeling video has been an absolute blessing for me, ever since you posted it. I've kept coming back to this video to watch the steps every time I model a new character's head, even though I've learned sometimes to avoid making those extra edge loops because my models are more simplified and cartoony. The basic topology is spot on, though, and more helpful than even most priced tutorials out there. Great work!

  • is the best video

  • Hey Squirc, really love the tutorials and the ZBrush sculpts, this is by far the easiest method of modelling a head. I struggled with modelling the mouth area, especially the lips, are there any tips or tricks you could give? Possibly a tutorial on modelling particular parts of the face, like the eyes and mouth? Thank you, I appreciate it :)

  • i would like to ask what is the name of this program and if it is free to download, please tell me!!!

  • this video made me feel like i've been living a lie as a 3D modeller lol

  • Dude im SO thankful for your videos, im an absolute beginner and i actually managed to make a head, im pumped!

  • awesome video and method. been studying 3D modeling for a couple months and this is extremely helpful. thanks a lot!

  • my character is one i drew so.....it has no wrinkles cause its an alien.

  • Right around the part where he hits 1:22, there's this retarded vert behind the vert around the upper polygon with the eye that I can't delete. Is there a reason why it does that and how I can avoid it?

  • I have a problem. When I create a Plane at the beginning is isn't synced with the second screen as on this video. On second screen it is just a line not a shape. I've tried everything please help.

  • @nikolafras You're supposed to do that yourself, just like he did. A plane seen from the side looks like just a line.

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • where do i add hair and color?

  • I find it hard to model a face or helmet with side and front view, I'm not used to it :/.

  • Nice tutorial man.

  • What do you call this kind of modeling. I mean, some use spline, spheres, box, etc...

  • @QuatreiZer0 I call it flowzone modeling. establish the zones of your model that need a particular edge flow first. Then filling the details is easy :)

  • @squirc Thanks for the reply. Subscribing ;)

  • @QuatreiZer0 its called plane modelling.. cause u start modelling with just a polygonal plane...

  • Envy. Very cool tutorial

  • how do you mirror the head so I can get a full head out of it?

  • @HikaruNoIkaros I think you would have to duplicate it, but you have to go to the duplicate special option to change it's direction to match the original half of the head so that you don't have to manually rotate it when it's duplicated.

  • @MissStitchy ok thanks, I got it now ^^

  • Hey so i was trying to make a face on maya 2011 tutorial version, i go to edit mesh to use the split polygon tool and its not there! i posted this on the hand video too, that was an accident. but ive been searching for 6 hours and i need help....its getting extremely aggravating haha

  • @2thPicStation Its been renamed to "interactive split tools"

    sry for my bad English

  • Im using maya 2011 trial version, im attempting to make a face, when i go to edit mesh after making my first polygon there is no split polygon tool. ive searched for over 6 hours now and i dont know what do do....SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!

  • @2thPicStation try....shift+right clicking and hovering ur mouse to "split polygon" or whatever...(which is..to the left)...do this while u're on the "edge" mode of the mesh

  • @2thPicStation sry, lemme correct that....do this while u're on the "object" mode of the mesh. if u shift+right click(hold), u'll see the "split polygon tool" on the left. just point to it, and then start by clicking on the edges of ur mesh

  • Thanks a lot. This tutorial was really helpful for me^^

  • What tool did you use in 3:22

  • @avesor that's the split polygon tool

  • You make it seam like it's easy!DX

how hard is it acely to model a human in maya?

  • Thank you of your@squirc ,This is what I see most easy to understand tutorial, and the head modeling.Because of language barrier, I do not understand any word in your video.Of course, this is my English is too bad.But this tutorial really helped me.Thank you very much tutorial, you are great!!!!!!\(^o^)/

  • hi...i imported my images into maya already....but wen i use plane n model like u do...i can't c it in the front side because its flat....how did u make it so tat the plane can be seen in both side n front?

  • @LoveSesshoumaru4Ever take pictures from the side, that's what he did. All pictures are 2d

  • great tutorial, it really helped me a lot on a project I was working on. Thanks for the vid.

  • thumbs up for the technique

  • I'm having a bit of difficulty working with the five pointed star at the bottom where the looks like it should begin. When i go to add the ear it turns into a 6 pointed star. Is there a way to work the edge flow around that area for the best results? These tutorials have been very helpful, thanks for posting them.

  • @JuanIII Glad the vid is helping. To deal with 6 pointed stars, try deleting all the edges around it and then re-cut across the resulting space in different ways. experiment with what works best. There's no one right answer for dealing with 6ps. Good luck!

  • any ideas how to make maya 2012's interactive split tool act more old school? it's snapping is driving me nuts

    thanks

  • @1038892 while your split-poly tool is active, settings for it appear in the tool settings

  • the point of talent in addition to career is what everyone needs. Perhaps going to school and getting those papers might seem a waste of time but trust me, sometimes they count a lot if you need employment in some companies however if you got the capital, then starting your own company where you are your own boss is every man's dream. A portfolio of successful projects will earn you points as well. cheers.

  • video goes way too fucking fast, this was only frustrating to me.

  • @TheDancingKetchup rly? i thought it was a little basic... which thankfully is what i need because this video has taken a very complex process and simplified it nicely. you probably just need to learn the tools better

  • This is just awesome. I really thank you!

  • How much does the average student make at fullsail? im almost 14 but i have been 3d modeling since i was 10 and i have gotten really good at it. I was wanting to know if i would be able to get in with a GPA of 3.7

  • @UberNoobtoober1995 just hit the delete key

  • Hello squirc and everyone! I know school is important and all but I believe going to college is a waste of time, although I respect schooling but I believe that tutorials like these is evident enough and can make you alot of money. Of course, we still have to go to school to get the degree in the end anyways.

  • @StormKat30 A degree is not required for the visual effects entertainment industry. It can help, but if you're self motivated and talented, you can go far. I'm not sure about "make you a lot of money" far for most people, but you can do ok. You usually only need to go to school if you want to teach it.

  • @squirc You got a good point! Yes it's true that you said that because the internet has gotten to the point where you can just go for video tutorials that gives you hands on training.

  • @StormKat30 highschool aint important, but for 3D stuff: you'll learn a tonne in far less time if you take a course. it will also force you to do well and they make you build a reel for yourself to impress clients and potential employers.

  • @kerihobo After my last message, before you made the reply, I realized that.

  • excellent tut, i felt so good that i learned so much by just watching and listening :) didnt really understand what you meand by those six pointed stars, could you kinda explain why do you not want them there?

  • @VartinMana thanks! six pointed stars are vertices that have 6 edges connected to them. they are bad because the more edges attach to a vert, the more weight it has over the deformation of that area. It means that that vert will have disproportionately heavy effect on that part of the model.

  • so fast.. :(

  • Excellent - this has really helped - thanks!

  • can i somehow get those photos of old man...

  • very well explained indeed .. for someone like me who's learning animation , modeling especially ... dis tutorial has been enjoyable and beneficial .... thnx once again

  • @falak90 Glad you liked it!

  • dis is patch modeling ... isnt it ???

  • @falak90 no, this is different. This is poly modeling using a technique I call "flowzone modeling". Patch modeling involves nurbs or spline meshes.

  • i like how you made the face from a plane ,in class they teach me how to do it from a cube and it gets really confusing, your flow is much easy to grasp n understand the flow, does this mean you can use the same steps to make any kind of head you want to model?

  • @MrTOKUKITA Hi, glad you like the vid. This technique will work for any human face and many animal faces as well. I agree that starting from a cube is tedious and confusing. much better to start with the proper edge flow from the begining

  • @squirc :okay :),many thanks again im goin to stick to this untill i develop my own style :) cheers!!

  • @squirc hi, when i move the vertices, it tends to pull away the vertices close to it, is there a way to not do that?

  • thank you :)

  • Hi, I hope you can help me.

I am reasonably new to maya, I have created a plane and started moving the points to match the contours of the face. Now after I either split a polygon or extrude or even just change points. I get a warning from maya saying that some items cannot be moved in 3d view. I have searched the internet for an answer but no one can give me a solution. If you have any idea please reply to this and help me out. Thank you for your time.

  • How to set rendring qulity low?

  • tanks.great tuts...

  • im sooo sorry but i dont wanna take risk

please dont report my comment in 1932, a little girl named Suzie was walking down the hall of an old hotel. A crazy man killed her by stabbing her in the back of the head and throwing her body in an elevator. While he closed the elevator doors he said the words "BAKUDA BAKUDA". Now that you have read this message, her dead body will appear in your bedroom every night you go to bed. Unless you do this:

  • I gave up on this, Cant even do the first step because when I go to move on of the vertices it willjust bend the entire thing. Im a nub

  • this isnt a tutorial

  • How ro you mirror the other half of the mesh? Is there a modifier like there is in Blender?

  • @d3sertst0rm Under the mesh menu there's a mirror tool.

  • just a guess..: you're not doing this for the first time, are you?

  • god i hate how hard it is to find a good refrence for anything with out paying or water mark

  • How long have you been using Maya?

  • @reeceyfezza about 5 years. been doing 3d in general for about 10 years

  • @squirc Okay, so you've been using Maya and Z-Brush for about the same amount of time.

    Hm, thanks.

  • @squirc hey, thanx for tut, listen, is it possible to get job as 3d designer without specific education only learning at home by my self? I mean if I really know my thing and have a catch on it.

  • @maardza4 Yes. the most important thing is having a good portfolio with quality work in it. If you can teach yourself, there's no need to go to school for it. However, some traditional art classes never hurt :)

  • You're a life saver. I failed every time before this but now my videos can once again be as awsome as yours :D

  • mahaha XTREME RINKLES!

  • fuck man slow down lol

  • When you 1st start with the planes I get confused how you placed them on the side view of the face.

  • Thanks for all your help! I just have one last problem (you were right on both cases). The mouth: How do I make it, given this edgeflow? I've tried extruding inwards from the lip verts, but I realize that I dont really have lips!

  • @Grim1Tuesday2 just extrude inwards anyway, then insert edgeloops to shape out the lips.

  • Wow, awesome tute. Ive done head modelling before but edge flow was somewhat an issue, will put this tute to good use now.

  • Great tutorial. I have one question, though. When I follow this method, and then mirror the geometry, then smooth, the nose gets really weird. Is there something I am doing wrong, or is there somethign I can do to fix it?

  • @Grim1Tuesday2 It's possible that you may have forgot to delete the faces on the inside of the nose. If you leave them there, they'll get doubled up in weird ways when you mirror.

  • @squirc I actually ran into that problem when I was moving over the model to Mudbox, but I figured it out. However, I think I figured out what the problem is here too: There is an 8 point star at the end of the nose, no doubt due to something I did wrong. Is there a way to fix this, or should I start all over again?

  • @Grim1Tuesday2 What I think happened is when you mirrored the head, the merge tolerance was set too high and it merged verts that weren't actually mirror verts. You can change the distance tolerance after you merge to a lower number to avoid the prob in the future. To fix it, you can try deleting and recutting edges. good luck!

  • thank you for this video, im going to university later this year to study computer game art and my interviewer said edge flow is one of the things I need to practice.

  • Hey thanks for this tutorial. I'd like to get you in on this conversation over at c4dcafe about your tutorial. Some people believe that your method is not professional. I would like to get your thoughts over at this discussion.

  • Dude! That two poly starting point is the bomb. This is by far the most helpful edge flow tut I have ever seen. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much, this really helps :)

  • dumb question but

after creating one half do u just duplicate and reflect it or do u manually create the other half

  • @fragusman either way works...but I think one will be faster :)

  • Awesome tutorial, starting with the mouth and eyes so those edge loops are already taken care of is a really good tip

  • A THOUSAND TIMES THANK YOU. You helped me in a crunch with this tutorial. I'm a newbie and this was heaven sent.

  • @EbonyShadow07 You're welcome! I'm so glad that it helped you!

  • how did you extrude toward the center of the surface at :31? everytime i try to extrude the surface it shows arrows instead of squares. i have a different version of maya

  • @Rosalitamaria Move tool is arrows, scale is squares, rotate is circles.

  • This tutorial is really great, thanks so much!

  • which program do you use?

  • So good! Love this basic tuturial! :)

  • really nice tut

  • Hey are you the same guy on that Lynda.com who made that tutorial on Modeling a character ???? cool gud to know you have your own channel on you tube,....

  • @imranbug81 Yeah, that's me! be on the lookout for a new course from me soon...

  • @squirc really i would love to see that.. i am new to Maya and your modeling tutorial have seriously helped me, If possible can you also teach Rigging, Material, Lights, animation, rendering and other Maya stuff.. as well....

  • Awesome tutorial

  • Nice tutorials, you should work even faster so beginners have even a harder time keeping up. Two thumbs down.

  • I REALLY love your tutorials, and even though I don't use the same program, they really help a lot, but you should seriously consider PC. In my opinion, mac doesn't get the job done, it obviously has for you, because your works are amazing, but you should give PC's a try!

  • @DomnDommer thanks! I actually use both at home and at work.

  • @DomnDommer

    WTF!!? Mac is the best

  • how do you set up the pictures for modling off

  • @thomars9 Check out my video on that

  • Hey Squirc, im a 16 year old teen that really really wants to be in the game

  • Hello there. I would highly appreciate your or somebody's help on the following, and i'm sure other people would too:

How does one create the flesh above the upper eyelid, from which the upper eyelid emerges?- this in an accurate and animation friendly way.

    thanks

  • Hey, Great tutorial!

    Just a simple question.

Where Can I find pictures like this? :D

I can't find any pictures, and no one wants to model him :D

  • @karnok007 I got it from 3d.sk

  • I learned a new word! Turkeyneck! That's ace. Great tuturial, it was very informative. I'm just a beginner, but watching this I'm starting to understand where the vertexes should be placed on a face.

One question for ya. Is this the head in this tutorial considered low poly? Would this level of polycount be suitable for a console game? When do you know if it's too much? Thank you.

  • @sarigenaku26 good questions. this head is pretty low poly, but that's just because the tutorial is meant to show how to begin. From here, you could keep adding detail and get a film resolution model or you could keep it low and use it in games. You know it's too much if you'r adding polygons and they're not really contributing to the model looking better. or when you go over the poly limit set by the game designers. and also, turkeyneck :)

  • When I first start modeling Maya2010 I used your method of face modeling and it works great how ever creating the skull was hard. I ended up using a cube instead of a plain and created excellent result too.

  • nyc video...i just started using maya...this edge technique seems effective method of modelling objects..i was wondering is maya compattible wid programming languages lyk C++?

  • if i want to make an anthromorphic character, how do i add fur detail?

  • can't thank you enough for this really good method! I've tried many techniques over the years but this one is really really good! Thanks thanks thanks!

  • Please link me to something slower, I can't see what you're doing and trying to keep up is leading to some fairly extreme frustration.

  • Brilliant video thanks, only just started getting my feet wet modelling and this was a big help on how it can be done. :)

  • dude man you are f***ing pro :D !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Oh man, you are really fast! How do you get the tools so quickly?

  • Nice! by the way, what do you mean by 6 point stars, do you mean 6 point polys?

  • wow this is awesome :O

  • if you search cool textures:

    textureblog c o m

  • awesome video man

  • Squirc: in general, what would kind of computer requirements are desired to run Autodesk? thanks.

  • @1sthighkick Doesn't take much, rendering is what takes more processing power. Running Maya itself and creating something like this doesn't take much to run. My single-core PC with an integrated NVidia 6 series video card runs just fine, if that tells you anything. (My computer sucks)

  • can you share with us this ref images or anothers similar?

  • can u make a tutorial on how to make a person on google sketchup

  • what name of this software??

  • @amsalsamuel Maya

  • i was missed my this class i really thankful for this awesome tut now i will not left behind ^^

  • u r professional animator so easy for u

  • Out of all the tutorials to create a face I have seen this is by far the best. I followed the tutorial in 3DS MAX and got a surprisingly good result. Thanks man

  • That's a nice tutorial, bitch. added to favorite!

  • Cool hey What software do you use?

  • How do I attach the 2 segments after I apply a mirror modifier?

  • @8182junebug 1st combine mesh and then use weld vertices tool with suitable threshold.

  • great tutorial man....wish to c more of dem..n i dn say dat 2 evry1...tnx

  • Wow, due. Wow!

  • wow!!! another great tutorial. how long have you been doing this? i mean, u make it seem so easy! i've been practicing a while now, but i haven't dared tried to model a human face. this video gives me hope.

  • very nice tut,thanks alot

  • are you able to make model faces without a ref?

  • @Trilink2 Yes, but a ref helps a lot. It just depends on how much knowledge of anatomy and character style you have. If you know a lot about faces, you can do a lot without reference

  • @squirc yeah same with drawing i can never get the shape of a head exactly right in art so if im doin serious work i look at a pic of someone for it

  • are you chuck norris?

  • @chilibilly18 Chuck norris would have had 1080P

  • Please tell me you were once a noob, because that was fucking awesome tutorial, you got one more subscriber, I prefer this method over the digital tutors on modelling digital humans.

  • @x9T9 Glad you like it! I started out with character modeling about 10 years ago and it took months to do what I can do now in hours. Check out my full character modeling course at lynda.com if you wan't to learn in the fast lane :) the link is in this video's description

  • @squirc

I just thought you should know mate that I joined Lynda purely for this set of tutorials. I'm having trouble with seams when you mirror over the geometry which is pretty annoying but hopefully I can get somewhere with it. I don't suppose there's some sort of discussion forum on Lynda I could maybe chat to you on every now and then? I'm modelling myself and it's actually kinda eerie. Great tutorial. Brilliant technique. It opened my eyes literally. It seems "easy" now.

  • What happens when a triangle or 6-pointed star is created on the model?

  • @Jadandlud When these kinds of things show up (the triangles and 6-pointed stars), when it comes time to smooth things out (or if you get things into subdivision surfaces, etc.) things can get out of hand. Curves can start going where they shouldn't, and things like that. When modeling anything, I've learned in the classes I'm taking that you always, always, ALWAYS want to stay in "quads". (Quadrilaterals, aka 4-sided figures.)

  • My instructor is having us model a face by lofting nurbs curves. It just wasn't working for me. Your tutorial is making facial modeling "click" - I'm sitting here completely surprised that my face is actually starting to look like a face. Thanks for the good work, I'll definitely be checking out the rest of your videos!
