Actually Black history in the UK is very different from that in the States. Most Blacks came to the UK, largely from the West Indies, in the 50's and 60's to work. It was a voluntary thing. Whereas most blacks in the States as there as a result of the slave trade. Also, we don't call Asians Indians because they don't all come from India. some are from Pakistan, some from Bangladesh some from Sri Lanka etc. Be like calling you Canadian. Enjoyed your vid. The poor Irish originally suffered like the blacks during slavery times then many of them traded their green for white, and when the jamaicans came on the windrush they were treated like s**t, used for their labour due to WW2 and yet forced in to slum housing situations.

British racism is a bit like racism in Japan. It's often subtle, so the majority deny it and don't see how much simple discrimination can seem amplified when you are the minority. I'm white and living in Japn and it's been a very interesting experience in that respect. Throw in years of your people being abused and I'm sure the effect is amplified more still and then put it in the middle of an increasingly mixed race culture (London has the most languages spoken of any city) and that's the UK.

Most black British people moved here in the 1950s and 60s, apart from a bit of racism they've not had the same struggle that black Americans have had in my opinion, I think there's big tension with Muslims and Whites in England but not so much with blacks and whites

If you go to any major city in Britain you will come across huge, thriving black and asian communities, I'm from east london which has a large black community but my older brothers live in manchester and birmingham and when i go up to visit them they have huge black and asian communities aswell, its not just london.
Hi riccorich, I live in brixton it was notorious in the 80s for the riots and has a history of vilonce, the majority of black people are from Jamaica, however brixton is small, very small and it now considered urban and trendy.

Completely agree, black people in Britain use the term Black British because they have completely integrated themselves into British society and race has become en-large comletely irrelevent to British people. Whereas in America black people isolate themselves by referring to themselves as African American. That is why there are generally no black areas in Britain. Britain is well ahead of America in terms of equality.

@Idontlikedogs1010 About the thing you said on slavery, America stopped slavery in the second half of the 19th century, but it was deemed ''never to of been legal'' in the UK in 1748 and all slaves directly under British law, regardless of race, had to be emancipated at once. The rich used dodgy laws (which they made up) and such things as the american war of independance to stop emancipation in the colonies.

Well first of all, black British are mostly new immigrants from Africa who still speak with African accents or have connections to one foreign country or another white black Americans have been in the U.S. for a long time and have little or no connection to other countries. I feel that most black Americans can truely be called "Americans" while most black British people are still outsiders to the country they live in.

British black people should be the most advanced Black people in the world as they had more advantages than African America. But they are actually going backwards as there are less black people in position of power or influence now than 30 years ago in the UK. The UK shows overt racism is a go motivator for black success. White Brits have learned not to be overtly racist and do it privately and made Black Brits less angry, less motivated to change things and reach for the top.
Black British are better educated as a bigger percentage of Black people go to University In England than the USA. But Black people in the UK have very little influence in the media, political or economically because Black Brits are not political. Racism in the UK is far less overt and the UK is classed based society and not merit based like the USA.

I had to laugh at the comparison between Brixton and Harlem, I've never been to Harlem but I like brixton its got much more culture in music and festivals than the rest of London put together, its where all the big musical talents go, to perform for London. the history of Black people in this country is completely different from the US. Black people in this country came to this country as immigrants, as free people. They were invited by the Government after WW2 to alleviate labour shortages. There was no civil rights 'movement' as such. The overwhelming majority did not experience serious racism or discrimination but some did. For that reason various anti-discrimination laws were passed.
british blacks and american blacks are exactly the same just different accents, being raised in the british or american ghetto, suburb or upper class environment will produce the same kind of individual. I'm mixed raced and have lived in canada and england equally over the last 25 years .

Actually Black history in the UK is very different from that in the States. Most Blacks came to the UK, largely from the West Indies, in the 50's and 60's to work. It was a voluntary thing. Whereas most blacks in the States as there as a result of the slave trade. Also, we don't call Asians Indians because they don't all come from India. some are from Pakistan, some from Bangladesh some from Sri Lanka etc. Be like calling you Canadian. Enjoyed your vid. The poor Irish originally suffered like the blacks during slavery times then many of them traded their green for white, and when the jamaicans came on the windrush they were treated like s**t, used for their labour due to WW2 and yet forced in to slum housing situations.
The UK is still racist - but now by silent omission. All the things that they leave out, are the bits that disadvantage us. But we don't know any different, and just seem to accept it.

British racism is a bit like racism in Japan. It's often subtle, so the majority deny it and don't see how much simple discrimination can seem amplified when you are the minority. I'm white and living in Japn and it's been a very interesting experience in that respect. Throw in years of your people being abused and I'm sure the effect is amplified more still and then put it in the middle of an increasingly mixed race culture (London has the most languages spoken of any city) and that's the UK.

@Idontlikedogs1010 About the thing you said on slavery, America stopped slavery in the second half of the 19th century, but it was deemed ''never to of been legal'' in the UK in 1748 and all slaves directly under British law, regardless of race, had to be emancipated at once. The rich used dodgy laws (which they made up) and such things as the american war of independance to stop emancipation in the colonies.

The US music industry is a lot bigger than the UK's and it's a lot easier for US artists to make it big in the UK than it is for UK artists to break the US market. That's just how it is, it has nothing to do with their skin colour though, I could list just as many white artists that you may only have heard a glancing reference to.

@MultiObligation Skin colour has a lot to do with it because the black market in this country is a lot smaller so yes its easier to break but the fact these uk artists go to usa and cant break the market isn't down to colour but their status I agree..what I'm saying is in this country black artists are not given the same acclaim or adoration which is why many go to usa because they feel they will acheieve more.

British black people should be the most advanced Black people in the world as they had more advantages than African America. But they are actually going backwards as there are less black people in position of power or influence now than 30 years ago in the UK. The UK shows overt racism is a go motivator for black success. White Brits have learned not to be overtly racist and do it privately and made Black Brits less angry, less motivated to change things and reach for the top.

But Black people in the UK have very little influence in the media, political or economically because Black Brits are not political. There more Black people in the UK who grew up outiside the UK, so are more uncle tom like as they have not experiences white racism. Racism in the UK is far less overt and the UK is classed based society and not merit based like the USA.

I had to laugh at the comparison between Brixton and Harlem, I've never been to Harlem but I like brixton its got much more culture in music and festivals than the rest of London put together, its where all the big musical talents go, to perform for London. Definitely go see a band at the Brixton Academy if you are ever over here.

You are spot on about the black Caribbeans and Black Africans having tension it is only a slight problem though, Brixton and Peckham are in London city it is heavily influenced by Caribbean and African culture. We have had our fair share of heroes etc but America is much bigger than Britain and Black people in Britain is a relatively new thing (probably since 1945 the windrush era) while Blacks in america have been around for hundred of years- and NO we are not obsessed with tea lol

the history of Black people in this country is completely different from the US. Black people in this country came to this country as immigrants, as free people. They were invited by the Government after WW2 to alleviate labour shortages. There was no civil rights 'movement' as such. The overwhelming majority did not experience serious racism or discrimination but some did. For that reason various anti-discrimination laws were passed.

I'm from the UK and its just as fucked up for blacks in Britain as it is for blacks in America, because we both have underage pregnancies, youth crime, gang culture/ rep your ends in UK, rep your hood/colour in america etc. But one of the main differences apart from accent, is that in the UK theirs subtle racism whereas in the U.S its outright and blatant!
