As an 'arty' kid who liked this program, I did have one gripe, evident in this clip. I did my best with crayons but my folks were never going to let me use anything else, fearing (with considerable justification) that they'd end up with living room walls that looked like an album cover by The Stone Roses.
i lived for this programme....wednesdays...4:25 pm?...bbc1 now my evidence for the dumbing down of society...take hart turns into..... hart beat...turns into art attack!
As kids, living in very non-artistic surroundings viz. London working-class council estate (inner-city projects to our mercan mates) , me and my brothers and sister were thrilled to bits by this programme. We thought Tony was a genius. And we were right - he was.
He was married (..with one daughter I think). And no-one came out with any sordid stories in the event he had a lover.. so there's little to indicate he was not heterosexual.
So, I still have no idea he was gay, it's just a rumour, or a slur because people are interpreting his personality as being too genteel or delicate.
@Feisty1967 Fine. But being gay; whether he was or not, is hardly a 'slur' or 'sordid' is it? We all love our childhood memories of "Take Hart" and Tony's wonderful talent as artist & presenter. Funny how celebratory pages such as these become darkened by opinions about such personal aspects like sexuality etc. I know that's isn't what you meant. Hope sincerely we can all enjoy his work as it was intended; purely & peacefully with a little bit of nostalgia ;)
@alaphize okay I see your point, but I find claims that someone is gay (without real conclusive evidence), tend to be directed as 'slurs'.. to imply the person hid their sexual preference in some sordid way. You're right, sexuality should not colour in any way how we think of a well-loved personality like Tony Hart. It's just I don't feel comfortable with personal claims about someone's sexuality when he can't answer back, and it's not kind to his memory. I don't think he would appreciate it.
I could never create something as imaginative as that, my daughter probably could though. I need to re-discover my creativity, it came naturally to me as a child, but I became middle-aged, bitter and cynical.
@Feisty1967 Yeah, I think creativity is obviously something we can achieve alone, or with others. But artistic activities are more enjoyable when they're with others.
I had a different inspiration from Take Hart... I was also very young then and got inspired by the music theme, Cavatina. I was mesmerised by the series, and told myself to learn to play the guitar because of it... took up classical lessons and it was one of the first songs I learnt to play. Till this day, whenever I pick up the guitar, Cavatina is the first song I'll play... of course it could be that I'd forgotten the rest! : )
I do not think there would be many of my generation who did not shed a tear at the passing of Tony Hart. This was one if not the best kid's program in the 70's / early 80's. So long old Friend.
I was in my Teens, what Tony did this wonderful shows. Before he was in Vision On with that wonderful lady Pat Keysell. Amazing tv in the days of only 3 channels, BBC 1, BBC2 and ITV.
I loved Take Hart as a child! My own daughter now has artistic talent and is considering being a fashion designer, I hope I can persuade her to look at these vids, she may learn something.
I loved this as a child! I was about 9 when it started. I would love my own daughter to see this series, she has in-herited my enthusiasm for art and design, although I fell by the wayside.
@Feisty1967 Good to hear it's passing down the generations, I doubt you fell by the wayside. in my opinion, art is about experiencing and activity, regardless of how many years you've not connected with it.
It's even more surprising how many people return to art as a hobby, years after facing mindlessly rigid criticism from dead school masters from a more archaic and even nepotistic teaching system. I saw an art fair recently and spoke to a good artist about his work hence the description(!)
Great clip. I recall seeing Tony Hart on TV when I was a toddler in the '80s. I was fascinated and glued to the screen, watching the things he came up with. Fab guy, he was.
Love that '70s music too, when he's doing the spray stencils.
This man was a GENIUS!! like "Paint Along With Nancy" which I used to watch, this talented artist was also one of my favourite programmes to watch. Born in 1971, watching this man used to mesmorise me. The different materials and drawing methods he used to use were amazing. I used to wait for the Gallery which I loved to see and it didn't seem to matter how old u were, your picture used to get put on show. Gentleman comes to mind when I remember him.
@sirpico123 re: 'effeminate closet poof english male' ..I understand what you are getting at, but to describe Tony Hart have you considered any of these words:
My art teacher at school hated Tony Hart. He said he was shit and "wouldn't know what art was if it shat in his face". He also told us that he made a special trip to piss on his grave. He got fired before the end of the year though for biting Milly Jenkins.
@Scourgeoftheinterweb You're ill-fated art teacher sounds like he was from the mentalist school of arts, I mean, slashing on a dead man's grave? okay & understandable if he had good reason (like a child-molester in priest's clothing)..but tony hart's?! I do hope that he's been securely institutionalised.
Thanks for responding. No, the Tinpots were four characters, Egghead, Browned-Off, Sharpy and Redhead who lived in small paint pots on a shelf. They were definitely in episodes of Take Hart.
Yes, I agree, Uncle Tony was my inspiration for creating artworks, I think the choice of Che Guervarra was a bit controversial as a subject matter, however, the BBC was quite left-wing in those days.
Also good to have an older person interacting with children. Not like today when you have youth obsessed TV execs who are obessed with chasing the youngest presenters for TV. I think it helps bridge the gap between young and old
So many good memories of my youth. I was probably 6yrs old when this was on TV. Only 3 TV Channels BBC, BBC2 and ITV not the 200+ you have now. No computers or internet then only hot summers playing for hours with friends in the park :-)
@RememberToday4ever I was the same age when this was on TV too. Read your comments and could so relate to them. Kids have just got too much today and they don't realise it. I must admit, it brought a tear to my eye when I read this. Thank you.
Look at how much of this simply encourages you to LOOK at things in a different way. It's not about "How to Draw" but it makes you aware of patterns and colors that are all around. Because it downplayed the skill of art and instead focused on just looking, it brought it all with in reach of kids... and everyone else. Thanks - I haven't seen any of this since it was on in the 70's!
Wow,back in the day when kids could be bothered to do art, before the internet and video games made most of them too lazy. But hey,if it wasn't for the internet,i would'nt be able to to re live the old days by watching clips like this!
I am 8 years old again! Full of enthusiasm and joy of life and hope for the future, now I've ended up a sad, old, bitter 41 year old woman on benefits as a single mother. How adult life disappoints!!!
41's quite young considering life expectancy's about 85 for women now(?) , it's the stress and tedium that sometimes makes life bitter. So you're not old yet, you might love to join a local artclass once a week/fortnight to get out of the dullness of daily life...and slowly get that passion from childhood. Although he was not a single mum, look how old Tony Hart was and he still tried to make something new. Even though life's hard, and a drudgery. and I don't wanna preach.. ; D
I liked watching Vision On when I was a child and enjoy so much of the art work especially Tony's whose sadly no longer with us. i loved the way he created things in art. He was a very creative person. thanks for posting.
Yeah so you're right, the stencil art of both could be from the same school of thought, stencils and all, Tony Hart fits in the same breath as Banksy!!! Who grew up in the 60s-70s!
So sad, both Tony Hart and Oliver Postgate passing away...their programmes were essential viewing to me as a child. They both seem so much more 'gentle' then the sort of loud, brash programmes shown now. Why don't the BBC release a DVD boxset of Tony Hart's work? I'm sure it would inspire kids today in a way the current banal rubbish never could.
tony hart was such a brilliant artist he made art look simple and interesting he will be sadly missed by grown up kids everywhere! he had such charm and warmth too
Perhaps it is the use of the beautiful nostalgia inspiring music 'Cavatina' in the gallery segment, but there was something quite different about our era, wasn't there. For want of a better word, more 'spiritual' in expressions. Room for breathing. Look at the intro to Bagpuss, too. Programs like Take Hart and Bagpuss inspired imagination/creativity in children, rather than bombaring. Yet, if things have changed now then who is to blame for that? We all make the world way it is, surely?
I think the sort of 'subtlety' (surely not..?!) of this clip has been thrown out of presentation style these days..because there are so many channels to compete with, the broadcasters have needed to opt for the eye-catching, quick, bite-size (add other such annoying overused terms). Bagpuss is a clear example of a warm, dreamish imaginativeness that enriched their creations. On the other hand the beeb still produces the best kids' TV..I saw some kids enthralled by iggelpiggle and suchlike !
It is so.. real. TV now has no bearing on real people's lives, their experience, potential or fragility, humility. No room for free thought and imagination, just bombardment of illusion and hyper stimulation - as a reflection of our reality it only has one effect: disorientation! This is why today the most shocking news headline or cheesy show are equally 'shocking', 'impacting' as stimulus which is why no one can gauge reality any more! I never watch TV now. Thanks for the memory! RIP TH x
no wonder all of todays kids are so messed up..no quality tv like this to educate and inspire.only xbox death games..im damn glad my childhood was through these better times. rip tony, much respect
There's absolutely no evidence for your claim and it's such a stupid comment. What is it with you, do you enjoy imagining scenarios about pedophiles, is it because of some repressed desire to be one..?
I suspect he has. But his vile comments are neither big nor clever, though I suspect he thinks he's being cool and rebelious.
Wayzotoichi, you have the power to vet and delete such comments before they have the chance to show themselves in your settings - set comments to "approve" then they will only appear when you've approved them. Even so, you can still delete any you don't like. I'd advise you to do it. It's vile enough, but speaking ill of the dead in this way is utterly reprehensible! :-<
I would absolutely buy a DVD of Take Hart from the earlier years for the children in my life, since even now I find it inspiring viewing. Thanks for posting it.
Sorry my friend I don't have the original clip anymore :( But If the Beeb are listening, a dvd release would be just about on time (if not a little late for him to see people's appreciation). Hope we see more on Tony from the BBC some time soon :)
I remember I used to watch Take Hart as a little lad, 5 or 6 years old, in the Middle East.
Tony was Such a Great Inspiration! After every episode, I would go onto scribble in my 'Eager Childish Creativity' & then wonder how he made them so beautifully...
I would take some dough from my mom in the kitchen to make my own little Morph...and wonder why he never walked and talked. :)
And the Beautiful Harp and Flute Music, & Guitars...such a Lovely Memory!
That was a trip down memory lane. The style of children's programs then.
You notice that Tony isn't shouting at the viewer like they are deaf and stupid. Also the art materials are fairly inexpensive, hes not spent 200 pounds sterling on food produce and making "concept" art.
The communist doing a crappy mural ruined it a bit, Che Guevera. Maybe the following episode has a National Socialist painting Rodolph Hess.
And you started off so well! True, modern society has gone mad. But it seems you have fallen victim to it yourself. With your parting comment you manifested one of the more repressing sides of our life-political correctness gone mad!!!
thanks for this i used to watch this program when i was a child, never could get over how many talented children out there that would send there pictures in R.I.P Tony
Tony Hart inspired me as a kid to take up art. I always looked forward to watching his programmes on tv. Never have I seen someone with so much enthusiasm and passion for art. He deserves to be knighted. Check out the petition on Facebook. Rest In Peace Sir Tony Hart.
The vibraphone piece is called 'Left Bank Two' and it's by a guy called Wayne Hill. Apparently it was created by a Dutch company that specialised in writing music for television titles.
If you go to the BBC website and type 'Tony Hart Vibraphone' in the search box there should be an article titled 'A bit of vibraphone nostalgia'.....it's all about the piece and Tony Hart etc etc etc.
This takes me back to being a young boy in the later 70's. I used to watch this on dark wet evenings after school. No internet or play stations back then. A more relaxing way of life. A past era.
Thank you Tony Hart. You was an inspiration to many of my age group.
as a dislexia kinda kid back then , art was my only good subject hence me being now a graphic designer! thanks tony, you were a inspration to a young kid, rip
Tony Hart TV Artist passes on. I remember his show Take Hart in the 70s. - What a great show! Loved Morph, the Gallery Music, and watching how pictures came together - what a great resource of ideas for kids and teachers and ... well, anyone now who can relinquish their TV remote or their computer keyboard, or the Wii console long enough and get creative in their homes again.
For 10 minutes you have transported me back in time to a very happy childhood and memories of running in from school on a cold winters day when the evenings were dark, beans on toast for tea and Take Hart on the TV.
Seems to me a case could be made for Tony Hart being an iportant component in the development of British street art. All the spray paint and stencils, the guy silloueteing Che on the side of a building; it must have left an imprint on the mind of the veiwer, and when they needed to say something spray cans came to mind. On a wind swept morn I can hear his voice as it passes amoung the old stones, it cries "REVOLUTION" or be damned.
Alot of people within the Uk were sad this morning to hear of the death of Tony Hart. Shows like Vision on and Take Hart brings alot of us back to our childhood. His ability to create something from simple materials in a mere matter of minutes had some of us glued to the TV. Whether you were black, white, red or yellow in the late 1960's and 1970's. Many children from that time watched his show. Even at the time that stated that they didn't. The music used in the gallery bring it all back.
Ricky Gervais and his wanker of a mate Jonathan Ross is now what the BBC have to offer. I will NEVER pay mt TV Licence till those and other tossers like-wise are sacked. Tony Hart was a WONDERFUL GENTLEMAN REST IN PEASE TONY.
Driving to work this morning, I heard sad sad news of dear Tony Hart's passing! They played the background music from his "Gallery" section on Hartbeat - bought tears to my eyes.
I was a massive Take Hart & Hartbeat fan and sent many pieces of my own work to him.
Tony's, programme was a huge influence to me in my youth and he will be forever in the heart's of so many people.
Thank you for the sparks of inspiration that you gave to so many.
He's a legend, should have been given an OBE

As an 'arty' kid who liked this program, I did have one gripe, evident in this clip. Tony often relied on materials and equipment that wasn't exactly easy to come by if you were an under 12 in a suburban semi e.g. aerosol spray cans, oil based paints and giant sheets of paper. I did my best with crayons but my folks were never going to let me use anything else, fearing (with considerable justification) that they'd end up with living room walls that looked like an album cover by The Stone Roses.

No matter how good or bad the pictures were in the Gallery, he always had something positive to say.

UKSazzy67 2 years ago 4
41's quite young considering life expectancy's about 85 for women now(?) , it's the stress and tedium that sometimes makes life bitter. So you're not old yet, you might love to join a local artclass once a week/fortnight to get out of the dullness of daily life...and slowly get that passion from childhood. Although he was not a single mum, look how old Tony Hart was and he still tried to make something new. Even though life's hard, and a drudgery. and I don't wanna preach.. ; D

RIP Tony Hart.

Ossadawn 2 years ago 5

RIP TH x

There's absolutely no evidence for your claim and it's such a stupid comment. What is it with you, do you enjoy imagining scenarios about pedophiles, is it because of some repressed desire to be one..?
wayzotoichi 2 years ago
I suspect he has. But his vile comments are neither big nor clever, though I suspect he thinks he's being cool and rebelious.
Wayzotoichi, you have the power to vet and delete such comments before they have the chance to show themselves in your settings - set comments to "approve" then they will only appear when you've approved them. Even so, you can still delete any you don't like. I'd advise you to do it. It's vile enough, but speaking ill of the dead in this way is utterly reprehensible! :-<

I'm all for free speech, but that filth was at the very least WELL below the belt, and at worst downright libelous!!

Show some respect, and change the record, imbecile! Have you always been an idiot or did you have to study "hard"??
God Almighty!! I never cease to be amazed at the number of utter fools on You Tube!
wayzotoichi, I recommend setting your posts so that you have to approve them before they appear on here.
But thanks for the clip. Tony was a LEGEND!!

And the Beautiful Harp and Flute Music, & Guitars...such a Lovely Memory!

hardtoesxplain 3 years ago 3
That was a trip down memory lane. The style of children's programs then.
You notice that Tony isn't shouting at the viewer like they are deaf and stupid. Also the art materials are fairly inexpensive, hes not spent 200 pounds sterling on food produce and making "concept" art.
The communist doing a crappy mural ruined it a bit, Che Guevera. Maybe the following episode has a National Socialist painting Rodolph Hess.

At approx.6 mins, can anyone tell me the name of the musical piece used for the gallery? Thanks.
robert140602 3 years ago
The vibraphone piece is called 'Left Bank Two' and it's by a guy called Wayne Hill. Apparently it was created by a Dutch company that specialised in writing music for television titles.
If you go to the BBC website and type 'Tony Hart Vibraphone' in the search box there should be an article titled 'A bit of vibraphone nostalgia'.....it's all about the piece and Tony Hart etc etc etc.

RIP Tony! Thanks for your programme.
