  • He was always the same when he did the Gallery segment, always seemed entheusiastic about the pictures sent in and never had a bad thing to say about any of them. I severely doubt he had a bad word for anybody.

  • I felt very sad when I read about his death.I used to love watching him and I learned alot from him.God Bless this souls man.He was great.Thx for sharing his episodes here on youtube.I highly evaluate your great sharing.

    Best greeting from Germany-Berlin.

  • fuck off thats not a 6 year old who did it was a 22 year old

  • Enchanting. From a golden age of children's TV when children were not patronised by hysterical presenters. Lovely to see again. What a great man.

  • As an 'arty' kid who liked this program, I did have one gripe, evident in this clip. Tony often relied on materials and equipment that wasn't exactly easy to come by if you were an under 12 in a suburban semi e.g. aerosol spray cans, oil based paints and giant sheets of paper. I did my best with crayons but my folks were never going to let me use anything else, fearing (with considerable justification) that they'd end up with living room walls that looked like an album cover by The Stone Roses.

  • That's some clever use of stop motion animation with those triangles of paper. :)

  • Very creative. I wish I had the motivation to get my arse off the leather sofa, stop drinking and create a masterpiece like that.

  • i lived for this programme....wednesdays...4:25 pm?...bbc1 now my evidence for the dumbing down of society...take hart turns into..... hart beat...turns into art attack!

  • I loved Tony Hart and watching this programme as a child.

No matter how good or bad the pictures were in the Gallery, he always had something positive to say.

Tony was the Art Teacher most children dreamed of, and I will always think of him when I think of my childhood.

Rest in peace Mr. Hart... you were an inspiration to more people than you realised x

  • As kids, living in very non-artistic surroundings viz. London working-class council estate (inner-city projects to our mercan mates) , me and my brothers and sister were thrilled to bits by this programme. We thought Tony was a genius. And we were right - he was.

  • Happy and warm memories, Tony Hart was a big part of my youth and i thank you for uploading this and sharing :)

  • RIP Mr. Hart

  • I had no idea Tony Hart was gay! I suppose I should have guessed by his softly spoken manner and funny coloured shirts and cravattes.

  • I had no idea Tony Hart was gay! I suppose I should have guessed by the colour of his shirtness and the softness of his voice.

  • @Feisty1967 He was straight!

He was married (..with one daughter I think). And no-one came out with any sordid stories in the event he had a lover.. so there's little to indicate he was not heterosexual.

So, I still have no idea he was gay, it's just a rumour, or a slur because people are interpreting his personality as being too genteel or delicate.

  • @Feisty1967 he was artistic and sensual not queer. you'll be calling brian sewell gay next!

  • @Feisty1967 Fine. But being gay; whether he was or not, is hardly a 'slur' or 'sordid' is it? We all love our childhood memories of "Take Hart" and Tony's wonderful talent as artist & presenter. Funny how celebratory pages such as these become darkened by opinions about such personal aspects like sexuality etc. I know that's isn't what you meant. Hope sincerely we can all enjoy his work as it was intended; purely & peacefully with a little bit of nostalgia ;)

  • @alaphize okay I see your point, but I find claims that someone is gay (without real conclusive evidence), tend to be directed as 'slurs'.. to imply the person hid their sexual preference in some sordid way. You're right, sexuality should not colour in any way how we think of a well-loved personality like Tony Hart. It's just I don't feel comfortable with personal claims about someone's sexuality when he can't answer back, and it's not kind to his memory. I don't think he would appreciate it.

  • @wayzotoichi Plus it doesn't matter one iota if he was gay, bi or straight. The man was loved by millions, and rightly so.

  • @Feisty1967 so what if he was! what has that to do with art!

  • @Feisty1967 Tony was not gay, he was a loving family man, his biography was written by his daughter, very poignant in parts.

  • @Feisty1967

    god I hate flamboyant bigots

  • @Cokoholicar

where's the rest of the clip, the next episode, whatever!?

  • shut up

  • I could never create something as imaginative as that, my daughter probably could though. I need to re-discover my creativity, it came naturally to me as a child, but I became middle-aged, bitter and cynical.

  • @Feisty1967 Yeah, I think creativity is obviously something we can achieve alone, or with others. But artistic activities are more enjoyable when they're with others.

  • tony hart jedi magic aww how funny,r.i.p our tone...was he gay??

  • tony hart jedi magic aww how funny,r.i.p our tone

  • I had a different inspiration from Take Hart... I was also very young then and got inspired by the music theme, Cavatina. I was mesmerised by the series, and told myself to learn to play the guitar because of it... took up classical lessons and it was one of the first songs I learnt to play. Till this day, whenever I pick up the guitar, Cavatina is the first song I'll play... of course it could be that I'd forgotten the rest! : )

  • Do you know what song song this is?

  • I do not think there would be many of my generation who did not shed a tear at the passing of Tony Hart. This was one if not the best kid's program in the 70's / early 80's. So long old Friend.

  • I was in my Teens, what Tony did this wonderful shows. Before he was in Vision On with that wonderful lady Pat Keysell. Amazing tv in the days of only 3 channels, BBC 1, BBC2 and ITV.

  • that man is a gay artistic genuis

  • I loved Take Hart as a child! My own daughter now has artistic talent and is considering being a fashion designer, I hope I can persuade her to look at these vids, she may learn something.

  • I loved this as a child! I was about 9 when it started. I would love my own daughter to see this series, she has in-herited my enthusiasm for art and design, although I fell by the wayside.

  • @Feisty1967 Good to hear it's passing down the generations, I doubt you fell by the wayside. in my opinion, art is about experiencing and activity, regardless of how many years you've not connected with it.

It's even more surprising how many people return to art as a hobby, years after facing mindlessly rigid criticism from dead school masters from a more archaic and even nepotistic teaching system. I saw an art fair recently and spoke to a good artist about his work hence the description(!)

  • fab clip...ta...many child hood memories...x

  • i want a pad like Tony's. i mean his flat cum studio not his sketch pad.

  • rip tony and thanks for the memories !! one of natures true gentlemen

  • Great clip. I recall seeing Tony Hart on TV when I was a toddler in the '80s. I was fascinated and glued to the screen, watching the things he came up with. Fab guy, he was.

Love that '70s music too, when he's doing the spray stencils.

  • thank you for sharing this wonderful clip of Take Hart....was one of my favorite children's tv shows :)

  • This man was a GENIUS!! like "Paint Along With Nancy" which I used to watch, this talented artist was also one of my favourite programmes to watch. Born in 1971, watching this man used to mesmorise me. The different materials and drawing methods he used to use were amazing. I used to wait for the Gallery which I loved to see and it didn't seem to matter how old u were, your picture used to get put on show. Gentleman comes to mind when I remember him.

    RIP MR HART XXXX

  • @sirpico123 re: 'effeminate closet poof english male' ..I understand what you are getting at, but to describe Tony Hart have you considered any of these words:

gentleman, graceful, stylish, polite, friendly, kind, helpful,

joie de vivre, affectionate, cheerful, charming, eloquent, sociable,

warm-hearted, a sartorial elegance, jovial disposition, conscientious..?

Words you could use to describe other likeable personalities. (opposite of 'Jonathan' and 'Ross')

  • @sirpico123 just because he didn't choose to put your crap art wrk on his gallery....lol

  • @sirpico123 twat

  • Hopefully nigel's picture of 'the man in the pink jumper' will assist his recovery

'The day they came for Daddy'. Well done Stuart

Michael's piece 'please not another Rorschach test' is a dirty protest as well as a work of art. What do you see in the pattern?

  • the sky is on fire and the sun is a black spider in Anita's pciture

a picture of the Chernobyl disaster from a nameless psychic child

Simon has drawn his imaginary friend 'Mr Fingers'

Rhys has used animal blood as the background to his picture, simply entitled 'war'

Sarah's picture was inspired by a trip to Egypt and some magic mushrooms

'puke tree' by Laura. lovely texture

  • A great man RIP TONY.

  • My art teacher at school hated Tony Hart. He said he was shit and "wouldn't know what art was if it shat in his face". He also told us that he made a special trip to piss on his grave. He got fired before the end of the year though for biting Milly Jenkins.

  • @Scourgeoftheinterweb You're ill-fated art teacher sounds like he was from the mentalist school of arts, I mean, slashing on a dead man's grave? okay & understandable if he had good reason (like a child-molester in priest's clothing)..but tony hart's?! I do hope that he's been securely institutionalised.

  • this man was so brilliant at art he could of been a great architect.

  • Does anyone have any later episodes of Take Hart? I'm looking for ones featuring The Tinpots, characters who came out of paint pots?

  • @TheTrousermouse were the tinots not from tony hart's 'the art box bunch' which aired during the '90s?

  • Thanks for responding. No, the Tinpots were four characters, Egghead, Browned-Off, Sharpy and Redhead who lived in small paint pots on a shelf. They were definitely in episodes of Take Hart.

  • wow that music was totally funky!!

  • Yes, I agree, Uncle Tony was my inspiration for creating artworks, I think the choice of Che Guervarra was a bit controversial as a subject matter, however, the BBC was quite left-wing in those days.

  • Also good to have an older person interacting with children. Not like today when you have youth obsessed TV execs who are obessed with chasing the youngest presenters for TV. I think it helps bridge the gap between young and old

  • RIP, legend

  • he has a website, but it doesnt have any of his art on it.

  • couldn't help but laugh at this lol

    awesome vid

  • So relaxed and calm - and cool

  • So many good memories of my youth. I was probably 6yrs old when this was on TV. Only 3 TV Channels BBC, BBC2 and ITV not the 200+ you have now. No computers or internet then only hot summers playing for hours with friends in the park :-)

  • @RememberToday4ever I was the same age when this was on TV too. Read your comments and could so relate to them. Kids have just got too much today and they don't realise it. I must admit, it brought a tear to my eye when I read this. Thank you.

  • @RememberToday4ever HI...same as myslef your thoughts. sir tony hart, the wallpaper of my youth at dinner time after school...haha.

  • or what its called?

  • i adore this music (and the program). any idea where i can get the music from?

  • wernt we lucky kids in the 70's!. . .we had very little but yet so much at the same time.

  • Look at how much of this simply encourages you to LOOK at things in a different way. It's not about "How to Draw" but it makes you aware of patterns and colors that are all around. Because it downplayed the skill of art and instead focused on just looking, it brought it all with in reach of kids... and everyone else. Thanks - I haven't seen any of this since it was on in the 70's!

  • Last time I saw this clip I was 12..the magic of youtube.

  • heard the music! proper funky shaft vibes.

    very cool

  • He was cool, I used to watch this all the time when i was young.

  • Wow. I didn't realise how much it went downhill as I was only born in '73. This is a truly classy show. Mr, Bennett Fuck off!

  • wtf

  • I love this video.

  • I don't believe it! Is that Fred bloody Harris painting the mural on the house?? He got his face into EVERYTHING in the 70s/80s!

  • I sent my picture into the gallery, I never bloody saw it though!

  • Poor you my younger sister sent a painting and they never showed it either. Its so sad.

  • The guy being kissed looks suspiciously familiar!

  • Wow,back in the day when kids could be bothered to do art, before the internet and video games made most of them too lazy. But hey,if it wasn't for the internet,i would'nt be able to to re live the old days by watching clips like this!

  • I am 8 years old again! Full of enthusiasm and joy of life and hope for the future, now I've ended up a sad, old, bitter 41 year old woman on benefits as a single mother. How adult life disappoints!!!

  • 41's quite young considering life expectancy's about 85 for women now(?) , it's the stress and tedium that sometimes makes life bitter. So you're not old yet, you might love to join a local artclass once a week/fortnight to get out of the dullness of daily life...and slowly get that passion from childhood. Although he was not a single mum, look how old Tony Hart was and he still tried to make something new. Even though life's hard, and a drudgery. and I don't wanna preach.. ; D

  • makes me wish i was 8 years old again!

  • Amazing, they should have kept him on at the BBC until he passed away, No one else came close to that.

  • Do we even have shows like this anymore? Was so relaxing after a day at school

    6:58 the dog is hilarious

  • I'm waiting in anticipation now to see what the Genius T.H. produces, as much as I did 30 years ago! God Bless T.H.

    d R aw I n P eace!

  • sad to see mr gervais milking him. the man is pure gold

  • I liked watching Vision On when I was a child and enjoy so much of the art work especially Tony's whose sadly no longer with us. i loved the way he created things in art. He was a very creative person. thanks for posting.

  • stencils ! spraypaint ! ladys and gentlemen we have descovered Banksys real indentity

  • in a way we have found him!

    is it really true?

    I reckon it is

  • Yeah so you're right, the stencil art of both could be from the same school of thought, stencils and all, Tony Hart fits in the same breath as Banksy!!! Who grew up in the 60s-70s!

  • tony hart was a role model to a generation of artists i bet a young bankys watched take hart all the cool kids at my school did

  • Great guy, lovely man. Take Art and Visionon was very inspiring to children in positive way. Both my young ones were captivated by the posted videos.

  • So sad, both Tony Hart and Oliver Postgate passing away...their programmes were essential viewing to me as a child. They both seem so much more 'gentle' then the sort of loud, brash programmes shown now. Why don't the BBC release a DVD boxset of Tony Hart's work? I'm sure it would inspire kids today in a way the current banal rubbish never could.

    RIP Tony Hart.

  • Totally agree!

  • Me too! The BBC should bring out a boxset of Tony Hart's work!

  • tony hart was such a brilliant artist he made art look simple and interesting he will be sadly missed by grown up kids everywhere! he had such charm and warmth too

  • Tony Hart was fucking brilliant, if you'll excuse my blatant English!

I cant think of anything ive left out...

  • spot on!

  • Perhaps it is the use of the beautiful nostalgia inspiring music 'Cavatina' in the gallery segment, but there was something quite different about our era, wasn't there. For want of a better word, more 'spiritual' in expressions. Room for breathing. Look at the intro to Bagpuss, too. Programs like Take Hart and Bagpuss inspired imagination/creativity in children, rather than bombaring. Yet, if things have changed now then who is to blame for that? We all make the world way it is, surely?

  • I think the sort of 'subtlety' (surely not..?!) of this clip has been thrown out of presentation style these days..because there are so many channels to compete with, the broadcasters have needed to opt for the eye-catching, quick, bite-size (add other such annoying overused terms). Bagpuss is a clear example of a warm, dreamish imaginativeness that enriched their creations. On the other hand the beeb still produces the best kids' TV..I saw some kids enthralled by iggelpiggle and suchlike !

  • wow.

like time travelling. and it brings a tear to your eye how the innocence is gone.

    fantastic. thanks you tube

love the gallery , where's mr bennet??

those pics of candle and toaster were awesome

  • I remember - feeling young again - about 7

  • It is so.. real. TV now has no bearing on real people's lives, their experience, potential or fragility, humility. No room for free thought and imagination, just bombardment of illusion and hyper stimulation - as a reflection of our reality it only has one effect: disorientation! This is why today the most shocking news headline or cheesy show are equally 'shocking', 'impacting' as stimulus which is why no one can gauge reality any more! I never watch TV now. Thanks for the memory! RIP TH x

  • Wonderful TV for children. What a shame it's all commercialised now. Trying to sell products to children should be totally banned.

  • no wonder all of todays kids are so messed up..no quality tv like this to educate and inspire.only xbox death games..im damn glad my childhood was through these better times. rip tony, much respect

  • There's absolutely no evidence for your claim and it's such a stupid comment. What is it with you, do you enjoy imagining scenarios about pedophiles, is it because of some repressed desire to be one..?

  • I suspect he has. But his vile comments are neither big nor clever, though I suspect he thinks he's being cool and rebelious.

Wayzotoichi, you have the power to vet and delete such comments before they have the chance to show themselves in your settings - set comments to "approve" then they will only appear when you've approved them. Even so, you can still delete any you don't like. I'd advise you to do it. It's vile enough, but speaking ill of the dead in this way is utterly reprehensible! :-<

  • Done, and done!! cheers :)

  • No probs, and glad to hear it!

I'm all for free speech, but that filth was at the very least WELL below the belt, and at worst downright libelous!!

Let's keep it friendly and RESTPECTFUL, eh?? There's enough nastiness in the world! :-)

  • Show some respect, and change the record, imbecile! Have you always been an idiot or did you have to study "hard"??

God Almighty!! I never cease to be amazed at the number of utter fools on You Tube!

wayzotoichi, I recommend setting your posts so that you have to approve them before they appear on here.

But thanks for the clip. Tony was a LEGEND!!

  • I hope Tony Hart was aware of what a profound inspiration he was to millions of kids before he left this world. RIP

  • I would absolutely buy a DVD of Take Hart from the earlier years for the children in my life, since even now I find it inspiring viewing. Thanks for posting it.

  • Sorry my friend I don't have the original clip anymore :( But If the Beeb are listening, a dvd release would be just about on time (if not a little late for him to see people's appreciation). Hope we see more on Tony from the BBC some time soon :)

  • I remember I used to watch Take Hart as a little lad, 5 or 6 years old, in the Middle East.

Tony was Such a Great Inspiration! After every episode, I would go onto scribble in my 'Eager Childish Creativity' & then wonder how he made them so beautifully...

I would take some dough from my mom in the kitchen to make my own little Morph...and wonder why he never walked and talked. :)

And the Beautiful Harp and Flute Music, & Guitars...such a Lovely Memory!

Goodbye Tony, My Great Telly Friend!

  • im a scots alchoholic and that was absolutley fucking brilliant

  • He could make something from nothing, clever & imaginative and always a great inspiration to myself. R.I.P Tony

  • rip tony my child hood

  • I wish my children could have the pleasure I did,in watching Tony in action. His shows were the best. They don't make 'em like Tony any more.

  • i wish mine could too, such a talent and a nice person with it aswell.

  • That was a trip down memory lane. The style of children's programs then.

You notice that Tony isn't shouting at the viewer like they are deaf and stupid. Also the art materials are fairly inexpensive, hes not spent 200 pounds sterling on food produce and making "concept" art.

The communist doing a crappy mural ruined it a bit, Che Guevera. Maybe the following episode has a National Socialist painting Rodolph Hess.

  • And you started off so well! True, modern society has gone mad. But it seems you have fallen victim to it yourself. With your parting comment you manifested one of the more repressing sides of our life-political correctness gone mad!!!

  • That was funky! :D

  • thanks for this i used to watch this program when i was a child, never could get over how many talented children out there that would send there pictures in R.I.P Tony

  • I Loved Tony Hart... Until He Passed On The 18th Of January 2009... Both Of Us Me And Carl, Miss Him So!

    Bye Tony!

  • Good times that are sadly missed. RIP Hart!

  • Ahhh, they were the days, so innocent, not having to worry about mortgages and crap like that R.I.P Tony, a true gent.

  • Tony Hart inspired me as a kid to take up art. I always looked forward to watching his programmes on tv. Never have I seen someone with so much enthusiasm and passion for art. He deserves to be knighted. Check out the petition on Facebook. Rest In Peace Sir Tony Hart.

  • Everything he did said "peace". R.I.P

  • Tony Hart is a major Art Hero for me, grew up watching 'vision ON' and 'take Hart'..loved his quiet style...

  • Two handed Spraycan action, LEGEND! god bless your soul Tony, we love you.

  • Loved this hugely as a kid, RIP Tony. Love the music on it too. :)

  • To Robert140602 - I think the gallery music is called "Cavatina."

  • At approx.6 mins, can anyone tell me the name of the musical piece used for the gallery? Thanks.

  • The vibraphone piece is called 'Left Bank Two' and it's by a guy called Wayne Hill. Apparently it was created by a Dutch company that specialised in writing music for television titles.

If you go to the BBC website and type 'Tony Hart Vibraphone' in the search box there should be an article titled 'A bit of vibraphone nostalgia'.....it's all about the piece and Tony Hart etc etc etc.

  • This takes me back to being a young boy in the later 70's. I used to watch this on dark wet evenings after school. No internet or play stations back then. A more relaxing way of life. A past era.

Thank you Tony Hart. You was an inspiration to many of my age group.

    RIP

  • as a dislexia kinda kid back then , art was my only good subject hence me being now a graphic designer! thanks tony, you were a inspration to a young kid, rip

  • R.I.P Tony Hart

  • Absolutely. Fantastic to see that again..so relaxing as well. Thanks.

  • The music throughout is exemplary

  • Tony Hart TV Artist passes on. I remember his show Take Hart in the 70s. - What a great show! Loved Morph, the Gallery Music, and watching how pictures came together - what a great resource of ideas for kids and teachers and ... well, anyone now who can relinquish their TV remote or their computer keyboard, or the Wii console long enough and get creative in their homes again.

RIP Tony! Thanks for your programme.

  • Thank you so so much for posting this.

For 10 minutes you have transported me back in time to a very happy childhood and memories of running in from school on a cold winters day when the evenings were dark, beans on toast for tea and Take Hart on the TV.

    God Bless Tony Hart

  • Rest In Peace, angel. You were such a lovely gentleman. Well-spoken and warm. No one can replace you. You were such an inspiration.xxxxx

  • mmmmmmmini moog, Lovely : )

  • very sadly missed no one can replace someone like him

  • Seems to me a case could be made for Tony Hart being an iportant component in the development of British street art. All the spray paint and stencils, the guy silloueteing Che on the side of a building; it must have left an imprint on the mind of the veiwer, and when they needed to say something spray cans came to mind. On a wind swept morn I can hear his voice as it passes amoung the old stones, it cries "REVOLUTION" or be damned.

  • Thanks for this - what a great artist, a good teacher, and a lovable man :-)

  • You were an amazing artist and a great TV presenter. You will be sadly missed. Am so sorry there's no one like you on TV now.

  • RIP Tony, you were an inspiration.

  • Is there a clip of mr bennet?

    RIP

  • vaj99 I think he might be in the Red Hand Gang clip on yt. Not 100% sure of that best of luck!

  • poor tony hart we'll miss him sadly...R.I.P tony hart :.(

  • I'd forgotten all about that dinosaur bit!

  • +RIP TONY HART - 1925-2009 +

    sadly missed

  • RIP Tony your artwork inspired a generation, you will be sadly missed.

  • Alot of people within the Uk were sad this morning to hear of the death of Tony Hart. Shows like Vision on and Take Hart brings alot of us back to our childhood. His ability to create something from simple materials in a mere matter of minutes had some of us glued to the TV. Whether you were black, white, red or yellow in the late 1960's and 1970's. Many children from that time watched his show. Even at the time that stated that they didn't. The music used in the gallery bring it all back.

  • tony you will be greatly missed ,

i owe alot to you for the art and magic you bought to me,

i owe you alot, thanks for everything

  • It's amazing - Tv for children that was not patronising and did not feature lots of screaming presenters. A gentler time and all the more creative.

    RIP

  • Some 30 years later and your basic, but talented skills still amaze and inspire me.

And,thank you for your VISION ON for deaf and hearing impaired children

We can still learn from you

  • Ricky Gervais and his wanker of a mate Jonathan Ross is now what the BBC have to offer. I will NEVER pay mt TV Licence till those and other tossers like-wise are sacked. Tony Hart was a WONDERFUL GENTLEMAN REST IN PEASE TONY.

  • So true- i agree with every word you said. There will never be another like him- and he fought a war for us too!

  • Driving to work this morning, I heard sad sad news of dear Tony Hart's passing! They played the background music from his "Gallery" section on Hartbeat - bought tears to my eyes.

I was a massive Take Hart & Hartbeat fan and sent many pieces of my own work to him.

Tony's, programme was a huge influence to me in my youth and he will be forever in the heart's of so many people.

Thank you for the sparks of inspiration that you gave to so many.

  • RIP Tony. Such a lovely, down to earth, inspirational man - and probably the main reason I'm an artist today

  • tony,s memory will live forever. most of todays ego filled presenters will be forgotten in about two minutes.

  • RIP Tony. The man inspired a generation.

  • RIP Tony, An inspiration to all budding artists!
